Vegan lemon curd with blueberries, on a shortbread crust. I was wary of vegan lemon curd but it's delicious.

In honor of that great mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter in Euclidean space - we celebrate with PIE!

Just baking for my wife and I this year, but couldn't let π Day pass without making one. Homemade all-butter crust, with a filling of peaches and mango dosed with ginger and a few other spices.

I had bought the box underneath at a local antique store a while back; it's an old pie display case from the Table Talk company of Worcester, MA. Given my penchant for pie baking I couldn't let such a thing go unpurchased.

Pi day pies for after the hard work.

pi day, for all you math/circle geeks out there.

i didn't create this image.

One second off, but I'll take it!

The number π is a mathematical constant. Originally defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, it now has various equivalent definitions and appears in many formulas in all areas of mathematics and physics. It is approximately equal to 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-18th century, though it is also spelled out as "pi". Being an irrational number, π cannot be expressed exactly as a common fraction (equivalently, its decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern). For more info, see Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi

Vin de Constance is Klein Constantia’s take on a sweet white wine, Constantia, which was one of the world’s great sweet wines in the 18th and 19th centuries before it disappeared with the South African phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century. Klein Constantia (Cape Town, South Africa) was the first to resurrect this wine in 1986.

¡ADM! Death By Pie! We'll have eaten on these for three days when all is said and done!

March 14th 2014 - aka Pi Day - was the official launch party for MIT AAx on the 6th floor of the Media Lab. In keeping with the Pi Day theme, sweet and savory pies were available courtesy of Petsi Pies in Cambridge.

Later in the evening, AAx merged with with the Grad Arts Forum Annual Arts Showcase and Soiree and the party rolled on!

The MIT Alumni Arts Exchange (AAx) is a global network of over 12,000 MIT alumni of all ages who are involved with and interested in the arts. AAx will host a series of events throughout the year centered around a special activity, theme or holiday. For more information, see www.facebook.com/MITArtsX

Traditional thanksgiving (or Christmas!) fare - with a twist of maple.

PUMPKIN & MAPLE PIE

-------------------------------------------

* 1 - 10" pie crust (see below for pie crust recipe)

1 & 1/2 cups pure mashed pumpkin

1/2 cup pure (not artificial!) maple syrup

1 cup milk

2 eggs lightly beaten

2 tablespoons flour

1 & 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp ginger

1/2 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 425 F°

Mix together pumpkin, syrup, milk and eggs. Beat the mixture until smooth. Stir in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the pie crust.

Bake approx 40 mins. until center of pie is firm and a knife can be inserted into center and comes out dry.

Let it rest for at least 1/2 hr before serving.

Best served with a scoop of ice cream, or whipped cream

Bon appetit!

* RECIPE & INSTR FOR SINGLE PIE CRUST

-------------------

1-1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1/3 cup shortening (I use tenderflake lard for all my pie-crust recipes)

1/4 tsp salt

4-5 tablespoons of cold water

Mix together your flour & salt. Cut in your shortening/lard with a pastry blender until pieces are approx pea-size.

Slowly add your water 1 tbsp at a time until dough starts to stick together. Form into a ball, then roll out on a floured surface to about 11" inches or so. Use a rolling pin to transfer and unroll onto a 9" pie (or flan) plate.

Fold under the extra dough, and flute the edges if you wish.

Happy Rounded Pi Day (3.1416)

Pick-up coins, a large scale logic problem.

Today is Pi Day in America. This is because they use a quaint inside out way of giving the date:

month/day/year

Thus, for them, today is 3.14 and of course those are the first three digits of the constant π (pi - the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle … C=πd)

For those of us in the UK, who write the date:

day/month/year

we can celebrate Pi Approximation Day on the 22nd of July i.e. 22/7 which will be another chance to eat apple pie - who could resist ... thanks of the idea Ewa :)

The hereios of the We're Here! group have paid a visit to the Pi Day group today at evaxebra's suggestion.

As always, I make pi patches for pi day (as well as any other time during the year), but I have some in my shop at the moment, as well as the 'make your own pi patch' listing.

See profile for details.
