The convent of San Andrés of the Calzados Carmelite order began at the end of the 15th century in a modest building on the outskirts of Salamanca, right next to the Puerta de San Pablo.
In 1626 a great flood of the river Tormes destroyed it and for this reason it began to be rebuilt giving the building a Herrerian air (there are old engravings that corroborate it), for which it was known as El Escorial Salmantino.
In 1762 a contingent of French troops with their weapons and mounts left it in poor condition. Which got worse with the war of independence (1808-1814). And in 1820 it was definitively closed. And in 1835 it was removed from the convents archive.
And the Snow Well was built around 1738, as it was an essential element in those days for the preservation of food, among other things. The snow was brought in carts from the Sierra de Francia and Béjar. The well is a 7.10m deep cylinder with a 6m diameter. Covered with a slate vault.
In the enclosure that can now be visited, we can also admire part of the old medieval wall of Salamanca, the stables and tenadas of the convent, part of the northeast tower of the complex ... And above all, the mysterious underground galleries, of uncertain origin and function, which submerge the visitor in the unknown of the depths of the earth.

In some regions of Burkina Faso, laterite is mined to make bricks for construction, which are also better insulators than concrete blocks. The photo shows one of the two large extraction sites located near the northern outskirts of the town of Dédougou (Sector 7). The digging method is impressive, with vertical walls that can be over 10 meters high. You can also see the notches that serve as steps to descend to the bottom of the holes. No measures are taken to demarcate the site and prevent any risk of falling, especially at night.
There is a large park in development a short bike ride from my home. It has been renamed Parc Frédéric-Back last year in memory of this great animation film maker and environmentalist. Like a lot of parks in our town, and likely elsewhere in North-America, it is gradually being laid out in the heart of an old quarry later turned dump yard and covered with landfill.
The surrounding area has been poetically renamed “environmental complex” but underground pipes will be required for another generation before all gazes emitted from the refuse have left the soil. In order to open the park, the pipe’s valves have been covered with truncated painted spheres that are sprawled around throughout the first section to be open to the public. As most of the park lays lower than the neighboring borrows level, a little hill has been created so pedestrians and cyclist can have a larger horizon and see outside the quarry’s site.
I’ve been photographing the process of this redevelopment since a couple of years from the path around the site but have failed to find a way to capture the curious view of all these round things around the hill that satisfies me.
When I got to the top of the hill Friday, I noted a young woman with a camera on a tripod pointing over the vegetation towards a series of these spheres. I thought for a second she may have found a better view point than I did. As I walked her way, I noted that I could see a still of her face in her digital SLR’s back LCD monitor. I soon found out Shena was shooting for a very different purpose than I initially imagined.
She is originally from Minnesota and came to Montreal to study at the Circus School afew years ago. After she graduated, she went on tour for two years with the crew of Montréal based Cirque Éloize’s “Saloon” production. Although it is a much smaller circus than the famed (and now turned mega corporation) Cirque du soleil, its productions are quite interesting.
Shena’s act was a Cyr wheel number. If you’re not sure what this is, you will find a link to this multi-talented artist’s web page in the first comment box. She told me she also does lasso tricks.
It turned out that she just had her hair cut and was doing her own portrait with a professional grade camera so she could update her public image. She stands as her own agent.
When I asked if I could attempt to do a portrait of her myself and explained that it would be part of a stranger portrait gallery shared on Flickr, she told she also used to have a page herself. It’s still actually still online. She was definitively serious about it for some time. You will find a link to it below as well.
Interestingly, this was the second time I approached a photographer with a tripod in a park. The other one, Bob August, the stranger # 80 of my first 100 series, is also on Flickr.
Both encounters were memorable and provided interesting portraits.
I’d like to thank Shena for posing and wish her success in finding her next engagement.
Shena l’a alimenté sérieusement pendant quelque temps.

Only in boats or canoes and this from the youngest age.
# Here Inle Lake is a freshwater lake located in the mountains of Shan State, eastern Burma. It is a major tourist destination in the country, so it is the second largest lake, with an estimated area of 12,000 hectares, and one of the highest, at 884 m. Its average depth is only 2.10 m in the dry season (maximum depth: 3.60 m) but it can exceed 4 m in the rainy season.
Transport on the lake is by boat, either traditional canoes or motor. Fishermen row in a unique way, standing on one leg at the stern and the other wrapped around the scull. This allows them to see above the plants which cover a large part of the lake (however the women row in the current manner, by hand, sitting cross-legged at the stern).

(En) Founded in 1906, the Coking Plant of Anderlues was specialized in the production of coke for industrial use.
Coke was obtained by distillation of coal in furnaces and, thanks to its superior fuel coal properties, it was used afterwards to feed the blast furnaces in the steel manufacturing process.
Closed and abandoned since 2002, the site has since undergone many losses and damages, not including an important pollution. While some buildings have now been demolished, there are however still some important parts of the former coking plant.
Among them, the former coal tower, next to the imposing "battery" of 38 furnaces, where the coke was produced. Besides them, we still can see the administrative buildings, the power station with its cooling tower, and buildings for the by-products, which were obtained by recovering the tar and coal gas. There are also a gasometer north side, the coal tip east side and a settling basin south side.

For a flying saucer that really flies, use aluminum foil pans of the same size (pot pie size is good). Cut portholes around the sides of one pan and glue paper "men from Mars" over them. Cut a hole for the latch door in the other pan. Staple or glue the pans together, rim to rim. Add cardboard antennas as desired.

The maquis, bars, dance halls and restaurants occupy a significant place in the social life of the Burkinabés. Suppose the offer is very abundant in Ouagadougou. In that case, it also tends to develop quickly in the city's outskirts to attract city dwellers looking for tranquillity and freshness.
Bar Pizzeria de Loumbila is part of an orphanage run by Catholic sisters. Located along the RN4 towards Ziniaré, Kaya and Dori, this is the first pizzeria on the outskirts of Ouagadougou. Since then, the pizza offering has expanded considerably in the town and throughout the peri-urban area. The old Mercedes-Benz, a former green taxi from Ouagadougou repainted yellow, has long served as a sign for this establishment, which offers rectangular pizzas. With the work to widen the track, the wreck was moved and lies in the area.

It’s then strictly forbidden to go further or to take photos, the latter being more delightful regarding the restrictions. Despite of their location in the center of the old town, these streets belong to the periphery; many of them are in decay. Obviously nobody cares about it. The picture shows the entrance to a shop in a street which (probably) once belonged to the bazaar, which is now mainly in the Northern part.
