I've been thinking about covered bridges a lot lately and the need to get back to Iowa to photograph the Bridges of Madison County. This one is an oldie. I can't even remember the exact year but it was in the late 1980's/early 1990's before my Mom died in 1994. The bridge was restored in 1992, so it had to be before that year. I remember this trip like it was yesterday. On a return drive from Cedar Rapids where my Mom lived, I took a side trip from I-35 in search of the bridges near Winterset. This was well before the days of cell phones and my poor Mom was frantic when she couldn't reach me at my home on her numerous phone call attempts. It's not a great photo as it is a scan from a film image and on top of that my skills were not very good. But I sure did have fun driving around on those back roads of Madison County finding all 6 of the bridges. Since this is the only image I felt sort of comfortable posting, I am planning on getting back up there in the next couple of weeks for a weekend trip and hopefully will get some much better shots with some Fall colors. And even more exciting is a planned trip to Parke County, Indiana; the Covered Bridge Capital of the US in late October.
The Hogback Bridge was built in 1884 by Benton Jones. Named for a nearby limestone ridge, this 106 foot long bridge spans the North River on Douglas Township Road. It was designed with a Town lattice truss system, with steel pylons to support the main span. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Originally there were 19 covered bridges in Madison County. Today there are currently only 6 bridges that remain. The bridges were made famous by the 1992 Bridges of Madison County book by Robert James Waller and the 1995 movie of the same name that starred Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.
I tried to hide my bad base image with some artistic processing.
This is what happens when you finish doing inventory and everybody else is still doing it. Then the computer goes down.

My favourite TV show over Christmas, and viewing figures show I'm not alone, was the last ever episode of BBC's 'Gavin and Stacey'. I'm sad that it's the last one ever being made, but I can see it would be hard to follow up the last show and it ended on a high.
Knowing months ago they were filming I drew this picture of character Pam Shipman (Alison Steadman). Pam is in her "Oh my Christ!" pose, which is one of her quotes!
Here is some more info on the character. (Put your hand up if you watched the last show and felt emotional!!):
Pamela Andrea "Pam" Shipman (nee Gryglaszewska; b. 1953) is a fictional character in the television series Gavin & Stacey. She is portrayed by Alison Steadman.
Pam is 54 at the start of the series, who lives with her son, Gavin, and her husband, Mick, in Billericay, Essex. She married Mick in 1979, not long after the birth of their first and only child. She has a strong, maternal, caring relationship with Smithy, whom she treats as her second son. Her best friend is Dawn Sutcliffe. At the end of series 3, she and Mick are living alone, with Gavin having left home. They are expecting their first grandchild, by the 2019 Christmas Special, when she becomes a grandmother, to Harri, Caitlin and Megan. (From gavinstacey.fandom.com/wiki/Pam_Shipman)

Set by the River Derwent, on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, the priory was established as a house of Augustinian canons in 1120 by Walter l'Espec, Lord of Helmsley. The gatehouse was built c1290-5. There are sculptures of St George and the Dragon to the left and David and Goliath to the right. Above the arch are sculptures of Chrsit in a pointed oval recess with St Bartholomew tothe left and St Philip to the right. the armorials represent noble benefactors, including de Ros, Scrope, de Forz, Fitz Ralph and Espec. The style of the tracery is often referred to as 'Kentish' and is uncommon in northern England.

Since Tim's been home from work we like to spend our lunchtimes watching YouTube while we eat our sandwiches. A little bit before Christmas we discovered the channel of these two. They can explain it better than me:
"JJ Extra isn't just a channel - it's a travel culture all of its own, created by Jason and Josh, a British couple with a passion for travel, adventure and making memories they'll never forget. Their philosophy? EXPLORE MORE. regret less.
Here, you'll find authentic, relatable experiences and honest reviews as they discover the world, share the highs and lows of travelling and sprinkle it with their own unique sense of humour - travel should be fun after all! Whether it's hidden gems, unforgettable experiences, or just the unexpected moments that make travel worth it, they make you feel part of the adventure as if you are right there with them.
So, pack your bags, bring your curiosity and become part of the JJ Extra movement - you're in for plenty of laughs, adventure and a whole load of no regrets!"
The three of us really enjoy watching them and they can't fail to put a smile on our faces as we join them on their travels. They have lots of visits to towns around Britain but love America too and there are several videos of their trips there too. As a tribute, I've drawn this photo of them.
