PENCIL DRAWING: Drawn on heavy Bristol paper. Size 11x14. Thank you everyone for your views, comments, group awards and favorites. I re-worked it a bit today and then I replaced the older photo of my drawing. Today I toned down some of the highlights in her hair. I think it looks better now. Edited 2nd time on the photo.

I've been thinking about covered bridges a lot lately and the need to get back to Iowa to photograph the Bridges of Madison County. This one is an oldie. I can't even remember the exact year but it was in the late 1980's/early 1990's before my Mom died in 1994. The bridge was restored in 1992, so it had to be before that year. I remember this trip like it was yesterday. On a return drive from Cedar Rapids where my Mom lived, I took a side trip from I-35 in search of the bridges near Winterset. This was well before the days of cell phones and my poor Mom was frantic when she couldn't reach me at my home on her numerous phone call attempts. It's not a great photo as it is a scan from a film image and on top of that my skills were not very good. But I sure did have fun driving around on those back roads of Madison County finding all 6 of the bridges. Since this is the only image I felt sort of comfortable posting, I am planning on getting back up there in the next couple of weeks for a weekend trip and hopefully will get some much better shots with some Fall colors. And even more exciting is a planned trip to Parke County, Indiana; the Covered Bridge Capital of the US in late October.
The Hogback Bridge was built in 1884 by Benton Jones. Named for a nearby limestone ridge, this 106 foot long bridge spans the North River on Douglas Township Road. It was designed with a Town lattice truss system, with steel pylons to support the main span. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Originally there were 19 covered bridges in Madison County. Today there are currently only 6 bridges that remain. The bridges were made famous by the 1992 Bridges of Madison County book by Robert James Waller and the 1995 movie of the same name that starred Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.
I tried to hide my bad base image with some artistic processing.
