Set by the River Derwent, on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, the priory was established as a house of Augustinian canons in 1120 by Walter l'Espec, Lord of Helmsley. The gatehouse was built c1290-5. There are sculptures of St George and the Dragon to the left and David and Goliath to the right. Above the arch are sculptures of Chrsit in a pointed oval recess with St Bartholomew tothe left and St Philip to the right. the armorials represent noble benefactors, including de Ros, Scrope, de Forz, Fitz Ralph and Espec. The style of the tracery is often referred to as 'Kentish' and is uncommon in northern England.

I decided to have another go at a self portrait. I heard it's good practice to draw yourself sometimes to see how your artwork is progressing! Here I am with my hair in that silly up do, just for a bit of fun!

... my 18th and final work of art for 2020--a commission for a man whose dad went to the school in the 1920s, created from a picture taken back at that time. Graphite pencil on illustration board, 12.5" x 18". Building is my homestead since 1955 and now my rural retreat and art studio.
I haven't done as much drawing lately but this week the urge returned to me, so I had a go at drawing American singer/songwriter, Billie Eilish. I'm not particularly a fan but her face is quite an interesting one.

An evening doodle. I have started working on a commission to draw some cutaway views of historic buildings in Beverley. To help unwind I did this sketch of the artwork on Sepecat Jaguar GR Mk IA XZ356, 'EP', of 6 Squadron during Operation Granby/Desert Storm in January 1991.
I've been mainlining Downton Abbey episodes lately and Dame Maggie Smith's face is just too fantastic not to draw

One of our favourite programmes is BBC's Gone Fishing, with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse. Both have been through serious heart issues and have become wonderful friends. Their half hour programmes are so relaxing, funny and endearing and I think we all crave the kind of bond they have. Here is my tribute to the two men.
