I make all of the papers by hand in Ottawa, Canada. Marbled papers are traditionally used as endpapers for bookbinding, but they have a wide range of other uses such as collage, origami, scrap-booking, greeting cards, framing, box-making, and other paper crafts.

Although paper umbrellas were traditionally made in several areas of Japan, Kanazawa was well known for its paper crafts. This oiled paper umbrella is an excellent example of the painstaking craftsmanship that used to go into something simply designed to keep ourselves dry.

We have been learning about blogging and how blogs work. To understand how blogs work, we made paper blogs. Students wrote their first blog post on paper. They glued their post to a poster and decorated it to make it look like a blog. Then we hung them around the room. Armed with pencils and sticky notes we all moved around the room reading each other's blogs and writing comments on the sticky notes. We stuck the sticky notes to the blogs. This idea comes from Karen McMillan. You can read about it at: www.notesfrommcteach.com/2010/09/learning-to-blog-using-p...

People who love paper are called Papyrophiliacs. That means the love of paper. This describes me for sure. I wish all paper was made of HEMP, not trees. We need the trees to keep our air clean. There is no reason why HEMP can't be used for all our paper needs. During WW2 it was mandatory for farmers to grow hemp, now they won't allow it because of misinformation. Canada grows it extensively, there's no reason not to grow it in the USA for paper products. Hemp grows very fast and in Canada is very low in THC, but more over, it being used to make paper products is much more sustainable than killing trees needlessly.

Day 117: Paper

This paper circle garland was the easiest, quickest decoration... about 15 minutes of punching circles, and about 10 minutes of sewing to string them all randomly together. I love how cheery it looks, and the best part is, if you can borrow a circle punch, it can be done with scrap papers you have lying around the house. When forced to decorate on the cheap, you can still come up with some nifty stuff.

I got this idea and directions from School for Us.
