After having visited Iceland extensively I can honestly say that all of its landscapes are of great appeal to me but I've also noticed that some feel less "alien" and closer to home, like this one which reminds me strongly of Highland scenarios in Scotland.

Every stretch of our roundtrip brought new sights and insights and amazingly varying aspects of Iceland's mind-boggling diversity of mountain ranges and geological features.

a stitched pano of a series of shots I took yesterday when we visited Eggum beach on Vesteralen island, Lofoten archipelago. It's these landscapes that give me the feeling that our planet has permanence no matter how much we mess it up.

Happy Sliders Sunday

Ramstad beach on the Lofoten islands on a glorious winter day. I could have stayed there for ever enjoying the peace and quiet :)

River Skjálfandafljót rushing along its very picturesque canyon right after plunging down 30 metres creating Godafoss waterfall. The whole setting is so utterly beautiful, it is definitely worth not just photographing the waterfall but to hike a bit along this river which has created a formidable landscape since the last ice age.

This was during our first night by the shore of Ullsfjorden fjord. We saw first glimpses of what days later would become the stage of a two hours aurora borealis extravaganza. We noticed the green glow in the sky almost every night which seems to be a common thing in the Arctic region, but the true light show is harder to find :)

journeying along Iceland's solitary road(s) in the South brought plenty of changing weather scenarios and I loved all of them. There is nothing quite like a wide open landscape with a grand old weather above it :)

Southeast Iceland between Jokulsarlon and Hoefn offers splendid landscapes like this one where glaciers descends from the mountain ranges and hundreds of little ponds welcome birds for the warmer season on the Island.

Vast inner valley we crossed in our approach towards the coast of Northwest Iceland. I just loved and envied that farm for its location :)

Panoramic view of Ullsfjorden fjord in the Arctic region of Norway during a nightfall in December.

We stood there for a long time and just when I took the LE shots for this pano a solitary car passed through, the only one for more than an hour :p

A stitched panorama from archive shots of mine of last December's journey to the Arctic region of Norway. This is a partial view of Ullsfjorden fjord which we travelled up and down exploring the area, here on our way to Nord-Lenangen. The whole area is of immense natural beauty which in my opinion shines especially during winter.

A splendid fjord landscape on the Lofoten islands on a day of wonderful weather moods and changes. I especially liked how the ice offered so many different textures and that there was still some open water left reflecting the mountain in such a great way.

This is one of the things I love so much about the Lofoten islands, that one gets to cross all these great bridges that link smaller and larger islands. Some of them are rather adventurous, some are just in wonderful locations like this one.

More road trip impressions from Iceland's Westfjords and their impressive landscapes.

Our two weeks roundtrip around Iceland lead us through fabulous swamps in Southeast Iceland where the first whooper swans had just returned from their winter migration. I thought this swan here to be the luckiest of guys with that vista :)

A very very special moment we experienced while standing on this plane watching this sun dog forming and turning the whole winter landscape into something utterly magical.

Iceland's Westfjords offer fantastic landscapes and most of all that wonderful quiet and serenity I am always looking for on our journeys.

This is a stretch of Icelandic landscape between Hoefn in the extreme Southeast and the East coast. We were on our way to Djupivogur, one of the relatively few places where to stay in the East and really marvelled about this stretch of snow-capped mountains, bogs and ponds which were all illuminated by the most generous Spring sun we encountered during our 2 weeks round trip.

River Skjálfandafljót, the fourth longest river of Iceland, runs within a wonderful canyon, often formed from columnar basalt. Here we see the river right after forming Godafoss waterfall as it continues its flow along the river canyon.

A morning of weather splendour on the Lofoten Islands, changing weather moods between snow fall and bright sunshine, crisp cold and the whole world as sharp and brittle as a knife made of ice ...

Breaking all rules here, but on purpose :)

A glorious vista to be enjoyed from the tip of one of several enormous fjords of the Westfjords in Iceland, which are arranged like the fingers of a hand. From here one overlooks the North Atlantic und two fjords. But I was more interested in this enormous Dolmen which serves as signpost indicating the different directions.

Siglufjordur in North Iceland, a place that rings solitude and isolation, but also natural beauty and man's perseverance and social solidarity in order to get through those long winters here. This image was captured in May, so you get an idea what it must be like in real winter :)

After hours of crossing barren, wild and rough Icelandic landscapes it is always a highlight to return to its coasts like here when we travelled from Patreksfjordur in the Westfjords to Kirkjufell. The bay you see to the right is basically formed by the neck between Westfjords and Snaefellsnes peninsula and is called Breidarfjordur..

Bank Holiday weekend was wayyy too short for our second visit to the bonnie Cairngorms, so it was with heavy hearts that we started our return journey. And the more the mountains receded, the more my mood sank ... :(

We went up the hill on this beautiful Lofoten route, I think it was route 815 and when we got on top this old black leather sofa invited us to relax and enjoy the glorious landscape around us :)

Haukland beach on the Lofoten islands in a moment of amazing light mood and changing weather scenarios

Our arrival at Iceland's magnificent Westfjords happened like this. Go on the breaks, jump out of the campervan and look for your jaw which has just dropped to the floor ... ;) :D

... and each one more beautiful than the one before it would seem when you travel along the Lofoten archipelago. This here is Steinfjord after a day of good snowfall.

Fence along the pastures close to the coastal line of Borgarfjordur Eystri in Northeast Iceland. That fence must have seen all sorts of weathers, seasonal features, storms and wildlife passing by like whales, puffins which are there in their thousands, and of course the daily visits of the ubiquitous Icelandic horses (here in the hiding) :)

Happy Fence Friday!

Sunrise near Hamnoy on the Lofoten islands. While we were standing completely alone on this outpost overlooking the beautiful coastline, about 40 photographers stood crammed together to hurting point on the narrow ledge of Hamnoy bridge we had just passed in order to get that "classic shot" of Hamnoy with Eliassen Rorbuer. ... Time to learn to see for oneself!! Time to flick aside copycatism and clicheised photography in order to offer something unique, something that truly adds to one's own adn everyone else's experience.

North Iceland and its serene landscapes never cease to amaze. I loved the diverse and very eye-catching shapes of these mountains and their white shiny beauty contrasting with the stark colours of the boggy landscape surrounding them.

a pano I shot in Hamnoy, Moskenes island, Lofoten. There is a helicopter landing place there, which I found incredible in all that wilderness, and it offered the best sea views :)

The river Skjálfandafljót forms Godafoss waterfall (here to be seen in the upper centre of the image) and rages on through amazingly beautiful rocky shores forming a wild and beautiful gorge representing perfectly the wild and untamed character of this landscape in Iceland.
