Have a wonderful day !

December 29, 2016

Blazing autumn color in the morning sun at one of the Old Mission Peninsula vineyards. West Grand Traverse Bay (of Lake Michigan) is in the background. This area of NW Michigan is my favorite place on the planet.

Vernal ponds often formed in this low area at Lake St. Clair Metropark. The water seems to stand year-around now.

This picture was taken at Red Rocks Park, into the sun, with a thick haze in the background.

The railing in the lower left corner gives scale to the picture. Morrison is the city in the midfield valley; and the Denver skyline is in the blue haze of the background, about 9-10 miles away ("as the crow flies") .

Ullsfjorden fjord in the Arctic region of Norway in a stitched panorama showing the cold beauty of its natural settings. It took a long exposure to show this since the entire landscape it shrowded in winter darkness with something like daylight being available for two scarce hours a day.

We are preparing for another journey to the Lofoten, this time in early February to witness this wonderful archipelago in winter conditions as well. I can't wait to get there, but in the meantime I have to look at my images from our previous stays like this one, taken in Reine - Moskenesoya island - in the small hours of the night.

This is a view from the top of "Mount Celery" (elev. 80 ft, 24m), the highest point in the county, and one of the highest points in Florida. (The view in any direction is flat to the horizon.)

Celery Fields is a 300-acre flood mitigation area, owned by Sarasota County, Florida. In 1995, the land, which previously was used for celery farming, was acquired by the County. They excavated several water retention ponds, and the removed soil was piled up alongside.

By 2011, there were ideas for use of the area, including building a recycling center, opening up industrial or retail areas and others. But the Sarasota Audubon and Sarasota County realized the potential for a recreational and nature site. Hence, the development of Celery Fields Nature Area, and the creation of "Mount Celery".

On our way to Eggum on the Lofoten islands we passed by this beautiful inland lake which looked all dark and monochrome with those leaden skies and when we already wanted to continue our journey, the clouds broke open and displayed a piece of blue sky which reflected gorgeously in the semi-frozen lake.

the vast and wonderful coastline at Vik in South iceland as seen from nearby Cape Dyrholaey. One may appreciate the wonderful black volcanic beach, the gorgeous monolithic structures made of columnar basalt, called Reynisdrangar.

Landscape scenario in Southeast Iceland which is very typical for the landscape in that part of the island: mountain chains and swamy pastures with little pools like these everywhere. These ponds are a perfect biotop for migratory birds which we saw making landfall in these plains in their hundreds. But I chose a quiet setting showcasing the gorgeous clouds and sky reflected in the ponds on this wonderful Spring day.

One of my favourite spots of our 2-weeks round trip around Iceland: Olafsfjordur in Iceland's North fjords. the fjord is surrounded by beautiful mountains and great natural settings and standing by its shore offers the most amazing reflective scenarios imaginable.

Coimbra is located on a hill by the river Mondego, about half the distance between Lisbon and Porto.

The main sight on the hill can be seen from far away. However, it is neither a fortress nor a castle, but a university (The Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal’s first university and among the first in Europe) :

Thank you for your visits comments and favs! :-)

Driving along the Westfjords involves lots of fjord circumnavigation and also lots of "table mountain" crossings and I could not tell which of the two is more fun. But I remember clearly the moment when I stood here on top of one of those flat topped mountains gazing down into the next fjord, its mountain range and the beginning of a mellow sunset and I felt like nothing else in the world mattered but the moment .

Som here's the colour version of my previously presented mono pano of Hampton Court bridge spanning the river Thames. The intense cloud cover did not allow for a starry night surrounding but the bridge provided its own stars :)

glacier landscape in Southeast Iceland with Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon in the foreground. Next to it lies Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, which is more well known but both lagoons offer staggering views of the thawing of Iceland's big glaciers. This was shot in winter, so imagine how things are in summer!

Iceland lies upon two tectonic plates, the American and the Mid-Atlantic one and those plates are moving creating a rift zone where they are drifting apart from each other. The position of that rift zone within Iceland has moved over the passage of millions of years. The tall mountains you see in the background are Vatnsdalsfjall (the Lake Valley Mountain) located in Northwest Iceland where once that rift zone was located about 7 million years ago. The tall mountains are geological features that were folded up through the rift zone while the small hills in front of them are not related to the old rift, but were formed in a huge rock slide down the sides of the mountains towering the valley. A very interesting and beautiful place to visit. (thanks for the information goes to Daníel Freyr Jónsson)

Happy Fence Friday!

Iceland's East coast is somewhat mellower in its Southeastern part before one gets to the proper Eastfjords. Here a coastal stretch near Djupivogur where the waves are contrasted by black volcanic beach and brown rolling hills. I just loved the mood of the scene. In the background there is the first of a number of mountain ranges that form the Eastern fjords.

A beautiful little lighthouse we passed by on our route between Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon towards Djupivogur in East Iceland. I found its natural settings to be utterly enchanting.

Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon in early Spring showing a different face from that we saw in winter. Already lots of ice melting and the glacial ice floes turning into shapeless, dirty blobs.

North Icelandic coast near Siglufjordur taking in the whole of this majestic coastal landscape with its massive snow-capped mountain ranges and beautiful fjords, its colours and weather moods. A moment in time which felt ever so precious.

... and still, I had to make my stand and get a freezing dawn shot of this picture postcard village. May I be forgiven ...

I shot this image whilst standing near Vatnsnes in North Iceland gazing over to the coastline along Skagastroend. I found these layers of snow-capped mountains, volcanic columnar basalt, hills of volcanic ash and the extremely sunlit rocky shoreline so utterly unbelievable, like a lecture book about geological strata and formations in Iceland.

Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in southwest Florida is a very unique place, conserving several different biomes in one conserved area. This is the swamp, with the butressed trunks of relatively young Bald Cypress standing in the water.

Each year that my wife and I visit Corkscrew it seems that another of the 100-year old cypresses sadly is lost to the latest large hurricane.

An almost full moon scenario as only Arctic winter may deliver. Long exposure of the early hours twilight over Ullsfjorden fjord in December. The sun never rises over the horizon during that time.

A very typical scenario for Iceland, here especially impressive at the foot of Snaefellsjokull volcano and glacier: a homestead, a church and a radio/electricity mast plus lots of wide open space :))

This panorama is the result of an early morning session we did yesterday to avoid the crowds of photographer groups that are now sweeping the Lofoten islands like hords of Viking raiders ;) :D This beautiful spot is part of my favourite fjord on the Lofoten since I first laid eyes on it in 2014 during our first visit. The morning light was amazing, ever changing, not for a minute the same. No photograph will ever do these landscapes justice no matter how much we try, for we only capture instances and while our cameras process the information nature has already moved on and changed again. I could just stand there for ages watching the light how it changes (we it not for the intense cold).

Travel impressions from parts of Northwest Iceland which I liked very much. Those fabulous mountain ranges went on for ever and ever.

Another view of Godafoss waterfall on a perfect Spring day, cold yet sunny, showing off all its glorious beauty. The place somehow needs those snow-capped mountains in the backdrop to showcase its most characteristic sight.

panoramski pogled na ledenjačku dolinu Vrata i Škrlaticu (2740 m) s okolnim vrhovima u oblacima s Tominškove poti od Aljaževog doma v Vratih (1015 m) prema vrhu Triglava (2864 m) / panoramic view towards the glacial Vrata Valley and Škrlatica (2740 m) with surrounding peaks in clouds from the Tominšek Route from Aljaž Lodge in the Vrata Valley to the summit of Triglav (2864 m)

After having visited Iceland extensively I can honestly say that all of its landscapes are of great appeal to me but I've also noticed that some feel less "alien" and closer to home, like this one which reminds me strongly of Highland scenarios in Scotland.
