My submission for the cup and saucer theme for Looking Close on Friday. I don't possess a cup and saucer anymore as I always use a mug so had to search n my archives for a suitable shot. I remember taking this shot at a country park - I liked the matching cup and saucer to the table!
One of three Chlorochrysa tanagers, the Colombian endemic and globally threatened Multicolored Tanager is a stunningly attractive bird. Males possess a yellow face and throat, a gleaming green nape, a black and chestnut patch on the neck, a yellow mantle and greenish-blue rump, green wings and tail, and bright blue underparts with black median breast and belly. Females are largely similar but duller, and lack the yellow mantle and any black on the underparts. Fairly common locally in the West Andes and north Central Andes of Colombia, this tanager inhabits humid, mossy forest mainly at elevations between 1300 and 2200 m. However, its numbers appear to have declined noticeably during the course of the last 50 years. The name Chlorochrysa nitidissima comes from Greek and Latin words; with Chlorochrysa derived from the Greek words khloros (green) and khrusos (gold), and nitidissima meaning "most brilliant", a superlative of the Latin word nitidus meaning “shining, glittering” (Jobling 2009). The common name in Spanish is the Tangara Multicolor (Hilty 2011, de Juana et al. 2012), or Clorocrisa Multicolor (Chaparro-Herrera et al. 2013, Fierro-Calderón and Johnston-González 2014). Dix mois après avoir pris possession d’un ancien hôtel transformé en bar au 104, dans le 13e arrondissement à Paris, et cinq mois après investi deux bars du quartier de Mouffetard, les 25 du 104 annoncent leur grand retour pour une nouvelle session de street art dans la capitale. Cette fois-ci, les graffeurs investissent un autre célèbre quartier parisien, celui de Belleville. Pendant trois jours, les vendredi 16, samedi 17 et dimanche 18 décembre 2022, 10 street artistes s'emparent des murs d'un supermarché G20 situé dans le quartier de Belleville .

The dark hours of night possess an attraction or beauty all its own. A star filled sky, a blue moon or clouds passing in front of the moon thus blocking a beautiful moonlit night. “Daytime Beauty” surrounds us with gardens, seascapes, tall majestic trees and the like. The peony is a perennial flower. The majority of peony flowers are hybrids, classified as deciduous tree peonies or herbaceous peonies. The flowers on both varieties come in a wide assortment of hues and colors, including pink, red and pure white.
The peony is a showy, frilly and fragrant flower that comes in single or double varieties. The plants are thickly leaved and have large, deep green leaves. The peony possesses a tuberous root system.
Grown mainly as a decorative plant, the peony also has potential medicinal benefits. According to the journal Experimental Neurology, peony root has shown to be effective in treating neuron damage.
Fun Fact...The peony grows wild in many regions of Europe. The Romans introduced it to England around the year 1200.

I took my camera to my sister-in-laws on the 4th. They have a big yard and part of it was overgrown with a lot of weeds...I snuck away for a few minutes with my camera. (I couldn't help myself.) I found these interesting plants (or weeds) glowing in the sun.

This old building possesses a faded glory. It does still remind us of how attractive it must have looked when built in the late 19th century on a hill overlooking central Launceston. It somehow reminds me of New Orleans and I can almost hear Marlon Brando (Stanley) screaming "Stella!" in the movie "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951).
Both male and female gulf fritillaries possess certain defensive glands located on their abdomens that serve as a defense mechanism against predators, especially avian predators such as birds. When the butterflies sense danger in the area or are suddenly disturbed, these glands emit a distinct and obvious odor.

These ponies were pictured at Combestone Tor, which is in the centre of Dartmoor, almost 1,200 feet above sea level and high above the valley of the River Dart. This is probably the most accessible of all the Dartmoor tors, and is therefore popular with those (like me) who don't possess hiking boots. The ponies are obviously used to visitors and two of the bolder ones walked right up to me to be petted and hopefully given a treat.

Andean Emeralds are found around humid and wet forest borders, second growth, and highland clearings with trees. They are most common above 1000 meters.
Males and females are similar in appearance but the male boasts a blue crown and the female a green one. Both genders are green above, white below, and possess a coppery upper tail.

Ixora is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae which consists of tropical evergreen trees and shrubs and holds around 562 species. Though native to the tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world, its center of diversity is in Tropical Asia. Ixora also grows commonly in subtropical climates in the United States, such as Florida where it is commonly known as West Indian Jasmine. Other common names include viruchi, rangan, kheme, ponna, chann tanea, techi, pan, siantan, jarum-jarum/jejarum, jungle flame, jungle geranium, cruz de Malta among others. The plants possess leathery leaves, ranging from 3 to 6 inches in length, and produce large clusters of tiny flowers in the summer. Members of Ixora prefer acidic soil, and are suitable choices for bonsai. It is also a popular choice for hedges in parts of South East Asia. In tropical climates they flower year round and are commonly used in Hindu worship, as well as in ayurveda and Indian folk medicine.

As dusk approached, I photographed this adult grey fox on a tree branch scanning for prey. These animals possess unique, hooked claws, allowing them to climb trees effortlessly. They are the only canid species with this trait. A truly remarkable animal!
The lands north-east of Vienna possess pleasantly undulating if featureless expanses up to the border with Czechoslovakia.

Wood ducks are one of Florida’s most beautiful species of duck. They possess boxy, crested heads with long, broad tails. Male wood ducks have chestnut breasts with green heads that are cut with white stripes, while females are gray-brown with white speckled breasts. The female has a distinct white coloration around her eyes, commonly referred to as “eyeliner.”
Both the male and female of the species are easy to identify from afar, with some practice.
In flight, wood ducks hold their heads high, sometimes bobbing them.
Wood ducks, as their name suggests, typically inhabit wooded, brushy, or other vegetated wetland areas. Look for them near:
Wooded swamps
Marshes
Streams
Beaver ponds
Small lakes
Wood ducks nest inside of cavities inside of trees. However, these cavities are not always common, and wood ducks often nest inside of artificial nesting boxes that have been provided for them. Female wood ducks tend to lay 10-11 eggs per clutch. They have a long nesting season that lasts from late January through August.

Red Foxes are well suited for preying on rodents since they possess such excellent senses of sight, smell and hearing. They seem to easily detect small mammals deep in the snow or digging underground.
Catching a Red Fox leaping into the air and pouncing on an unsuspecting prey I think is a goal of every nature and wildlife photographer. The male is called a "dog" and the female is referred to as a "vixen". Being such avid hunters they will continue to hunt even when not hungry and build a cache for later consumption. They are considered nocturnal but are often seen hunting during the day.
This fox scampered between my camera and a grounded Snowy Owl and even though the owl barked at the fox a couple of times the fox paid the owl no attention at all.

To some, this photo might seem gory but to me, I find watching these guys eat somewhat fascinating. They are so efficient at what they are designed to do and they do it with such gusto. And the various facial expressions are a treat to witness, also. Well, unless you're a salmon.
