The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.
Ernest Hemingway
" Is this what you've built, on your darkest day
First we cursed, now all we do is pray
We pay the price with a currency we don't possess
Cheating and lying to pass the test of life
To break or to bend
Praying to god to have mercy in the end
The echoes surround me
As do all the ashes of the bridges burned
The walls that compound me
Are speaking in tongues that can't be heard
I wish you could see me
Look further than all the games, all the games we play
There's no one to free me
This is the monster I became
The eyes in the mirror, stare back in an endless void
Burn in the flames, but the ashes feel so cold
After all you destroyed
I blame myself for buying every lie that you sold
And as we look further to find who we really are
Look me in the eyes
These band aid solutions have left us all scarred
This is who we are
The echoes surround me
As do all the ashes of the bridges burned
The walls that compound me
Are speaking in tongues that can't be heard
I wish you could see me
look further than all the games, all the games we play
There's no one to free me
You're making monsters out of saints
Drowning
I feel so lost in the waves of the open sea
Doubting
In search of the person who's really me
The echoes surround me
As do all the ashes of the bridges burned
The walls that compound me
Are speaking in tongues that can't be heard
I wish you could see me
look further than all the games, all the games we play
There's no one to free me
They're making monsters out of saints ... "

Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound!)
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd!
Thro' many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis'd good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
This earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be for ever mine.
Have a BLESSED day my friends!!!
The County of Essex – Scenes of Essex
I am an Essex lad. It is a county that possesses a City, a number of Large and Small Towns, New Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Ports. It has anything from Modern Architecture to Roman History and pre Roman ruins. There are Museums, Galleries, an RHS Garden and is open to the National Open Gardens Scheme. It even boasts a Secret Nuclear Bunker, although everyone knows where it is.
It is a place of Parks and open spaces open to the public, all those areas that were closed off due to Covid are now open to the public. We can still enjoy the many footpaths that run everywhere from Coast to Countryside. There are a large number of wonderful churches, of timbered houses, windmills, pub signs, post boxes, blue plaques and sculpture just put there for the photographer and lastly, much, much more.
Here is a collection of items that start off with Heybridge on the coast, a delightful place to visit for two or three hours walking around the seawall or just sitting alongside the canal having a pint or a cuppa watching the boats go past and there are quite a few of them in at the right time.

Modern Galápagos tortoises can weigh up to 417 kg (919 lb).
I am only 71 kg (156 lbs).
Galápagos tortoises possess two main shell forms that correlate with the biogeographic history of the species group. They exhibit a spectrum of carapace morphology ranging from "saddleback" (denoting upward arching of the front edge of the shell resembling a saddle) to "domed" (denoting a rounded convex surface resembling a dome). When a saddleback tortoise withdraws its head and forelimbs into its shell, a large unprotected gap remains over the neck, evidence of the lack of predation during the evolution of this structure.
Larger islands with humid highlands over 800 m (2,600 ft) in elevation, such as Santa Cruz, have abundant vegetation near the ground. Tortoises native to these environments tend to have domed shells and are larger, with shorter necks and limbs.
Saddleback tortoises originate from small islands less than 500 m (1,600 ft) in elevation with dry habitats (e.g. Española and Pinzón) that are more limited in food and other resources.
Two lineages of Galápagos tortoises possess the Island of Santa Cruz and when observed it is concluded that despite the shared similarities of growth patterns and morphological changes observed during growth, the two lineages and two sexes can be distinguished on the basis of distinct carapace features. Lineages differ by the shape of the vertebral and pleural scutes. Females have a more elongated and wider carapace shape than males.
Carapace shape changes with growth, with vertebral scutes becoming narrower and pleural scutes becoming larger during late ontogeny.

The Rusty-barred Owl possesses a similar range to that of the Tawny-browed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana). Both species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, with the present species being found in southeast Brazil, eastern and southern Paraguay, and extreme northeast Argentina. It occurs in lowland and foothill forests to above 1000 m, always in forested areas, although sometimes in close proximity to habitation. Principally brown, the facial disc of this owl is pale rusty-brown and the underparts are generally whitish to buffy barred heavily with dark brown. The species’ diet is primarily constituted of small mammals, birds, and insects, although smaller quantities of amphibians and reptiles are also taken. Not globally threatened. Currently considered Near Threatened. doi.org/10.2173/bow.rubowl2.01

Male Reticulated Giraffe seen in Laikipia in northern Kenya 2 months ago.
Below you find some background information on giraffe horns and this male having a third horn. Copied from the website of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation:
"Giraffe possess distinctive bony protrusions on their heads called ossicones, not horns. These ossicones are covered in furred skin, and both male and female giraffe have them.
Giraffe calves are born with ossicones, but these small boney cores surrounded by cartilage lie flat and unattached to the skull to prevent injury during birth. Shortly after, the ossicones begin to grow and ossify, transforming from cartilage to bone. This is called ossification. By the time giraffe reach sexual maturity, usually between 3-5 years, their ossicones are fully composed of bone and firmly attached to the skull.
Both male and female giraffe have a primary pair of ossicones on top of their heads. Female ossicones tend to be thin and often have tufts of hair, while male ossicones are generally thicker and often become bald on top due to frequent necking behavior.
In some giraffe species, particularly males, a second pair of ossicones may grow behind the first pair on the back of the skull, along with a prominent median ossicone on the forehead. The size of this median ossicone varies across species, with the northern and reticulated giraffe having considerably larger median ossicones compared to the Masai and southern giraffe. This variation serves as a key morphological feature for distinguishing between giraffe species.
Male giraffe regularly engage in necking contests to ascertain dominance using their ossicones. The bones of the ossicones and skull accumulate boney deposits or ossifications over time, increasing their weight. This allows them to deliver more powerful blows during necking contests. While fatal combat is rare, it can occur. "
Some background on this giraffe:
The Reticulated Giraffe is one of the northern Kenya specialties just like the previously posted Grévy's Zebra, the Striped Hyena and the Vulturine Guineafowl.
It is the tallest of all the Giraffe subspecies.
Some scientific authorities propose that some of these subspecies are elevated to species level and on 23 August the IUCN has recognized that there are now 4 different giraffe species.

The house comprises of three rooms: a home – a mudroom – a home. The walls are framework-based; the four-slope roof is covered with straw, with brushes on its edges and high coping.
Interior of the house is rather traditional. A stove is placed in one of the houses, while the second is “clean” one. The simple benches, cupboards, table, trunk, “dreamer”, perches therein possess their traditional places.
Next to the bench, a potter’s lathe is fixed, for housemaster to make his pieces of pottery. Above the “dreamed” pil, there are shelves (tramky) to dry the pieces before baking.
One room was for the potter’s work, another was a solar. The room is decorated with different fancy bowls, jars, pots, “twins”.

A little kingdom I possess
where thoughts and feelings dwell,
And very hard I find the task
of governing it well;
For passion tempts and troubles me,
A wayward will misleads,
And selfishness its shadow casts
On all my words and deeds.
How can I learn to rule myself,
to be the child I should,
Honest and brave, nor ever tire
Of trying to be good?
How can I keep a sunny soul
To shine along life's way?
How can I tune my little heart
To sweetly sing all day?
Dear Father, help me with the love
that casteth out my fear;
Teach me to lean on thee, and feel
That thou art very near,
That no temptation is unseen
No childish grief too small,
Since thou, with patience infinite,
Doth soothe and comfort all.
I do not ask for any crown
But that which all may win
Nor seek to conquer any world
Except the one within.
Be thou my guide until I find,
Led by a tender hand,
Thy happy kingdom in myself
And dare to take command.

Ospreys are unusual among hawks in possessing a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with two toes in front and two behind. Barbed pads on the soles of the birds' feet help them grip slippery fish. When flying with prey, an Osprey lines up its catch head first for less wind resistance.
Violaceous Euphonia - Violaceous Euphonia lives up to its name in beauty and sound, possessing both colorful plumage and melodious song. It is a widely distributed resident across northeastern and eastern South America, from Venezuela and Trinidad south to Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and southeastern Brazil. They occupy humid forest and forest edges, as well as parks and gardens, cocoa plantations, and citrus fruit orchards. Males have striking glossy violet to bluish black upperparts and deep golden yellow underparts and forehead, while females and juveniles are duller, mostly olivaceous above and olive yellow below. Violaceous Euphonias primarily are frugivorous, foraging alone or in small groups (including mixed flocks), but also eat nectar and insects when seasonally available. Martinez, D. (2020). The Indian pangolin, thick-tailed pangolin, or scaly anteater (Manis crassicaudata) is a pangolin found on the Indian subcontinent. It is not common anywhere in its range. Like other pangolins, it has large, overlapping scales on its body which act as armour. It can also curl itself into a ball as self-defence against predators such as the tiger. The colour of its scales varies depending on the colour of the earth in its surroundings.
It is an insectivore, feeding on ants and termites, digging them out of mounds and logs using its long claws, which are as long as its fore limbs. It is nocturnal and rests in deep burrows during the day.
The Indian pangolin is threatened by hunting for its meat and for various body parts used in traditional medicine.
The Indian pangolin is a solitary, shy, slow-moving, nocturnal mammal. It is about 84–122 centimetres (33–48 in) long from head to tail, the tail usually being 33–47 cm long, and weighs 10–16 kg. Females are generally smaller than the males and have one pair of mammae. The pangolin possesses a cone-shaped head with small, dark eyes, and a long muzzle with a nose pad similar in color, or darker than, its pinkish-brown skin. It has powerful limbs, tipped with sharp, clawed digits. It is an almost exclusive insectivore and principally subsists on ants and termites, which it catches with a specially adapted long, sticky tongue.The pangolin has no teeth, but has strong stomach muscles to aid in digestion. The most noticeable characteristic of the pangolin is its massive, scaled armour, which covers its upper face and its whole body with the exception of the belly and the inside of the legs. These protective scales are rigid and made of keratin. It has 160–200 scales in total, about 40–46% of which are located on the tail. Scales can be 6.5–7 cm long, 8.5 cm wide, and weigh 7–10 grams. The skin and scales make up about one-fourth to one-third of the total body mass of this species.
The Indian pangolin has been recorded from various forest types, including Sri Lankan rainforest and plains to middle hill levels. The animal can be found in grasslands and secondary forests, and is well adapted to desert regions as it is believed to have a tolerance to dry areas, but prefers more barren, hilly regions. This pangolin species may also sometimes reach high elevations, and has been sighted in Sri Lanka at 1100 meters and in the Nilgiri mountains in India at 2300 meters. It prefers soft and semi-sandy soil conditions suitable for digging burrows.
Pangolin burrows fall into one of two categories: feeding and living burrows. Feeding burrows are smaller than living burrows (though their sizes vary depending on the abundance of prey) and are created more frequently during the spring, when there is a greater availability of prey. Living burrows are wider, deeper, and more circular, and are occupied for a longer time than feeding burrows, as they are mainly used to sleep and rest during the day. After a few months, the pangolin abandons the burrow and digs a new one close to a food source. However, it is not uncommon for the pangolin to shift back to an old burrow.
Unlike its African counterpart, the Indian pangolin does not climb trees, but it does value the presence of trees, herbs, and shrubs in its habitat because it is easier to dig burrows around them. Features that promote an abundance of ants and termites (grasses, bare grounds, bases of trees, shrubs, roots, leaf litter, fallen logs and elephant feces) are often present in pangolin habitats.
Few details are known about the breeding behaviour of the Indian pangolin. During the animal's mating period, females and males may share the same burrow and show some diurnal activities. Males have testes in a fold of the skin located in their groin areas. The female's embryo develops in one of the uterine horns. The gestation period lasts 65–70 days; the placenta is diffuse and not deciduate. Usually, a single young is born, but twins have been reported in this species. The young weigh 235–400 g at birth and measure roughly 30 cm. The newborn animals have open eyes, and soft scales with protruding hairs between them. The mother pangolin carries her young on her tail. When the mother and young are disturbed, the young pangolin is held against its mother's belly and protected by the mother's tail.
Mountain lakes often seem to possess a particular magic and I try to include as many of them in my hikes as possible. I’ve visited a few these last days, and surprisingly this one looked rather underwhelming, but has turned out to be the most photogenic of them all.

Citrus Fruit Piercing Moth on our Orange Tree.
"Fruit-piercing moths are a persistent threat to any gardener with beloved fruit trees or ripening produce. These nocturnal insects possess a unique, barbed proboscis capable of puncturing the skin of even tough fruits. They feed on the sweet juices, leaving behind unsightly wounds that invite rot, disease, and other pests. The damage can range from cosmetic blemishes to complete fruit loss, making it a real headache for fruit growers."
