Obviously, snails don't possess a 'nose' as such, but they do have very sensitive olfactory receptors that enable them to detect a tasty hosta plant from half a kilometre away...

For Macro Mondays theme 'Powder'.

The snail is sitting on an ornate antique powder compact that was passed to me by my mother. I have no idea how old or valuable it might be - but it has clearly had a fair bit of use judging from the worn patches on the powder puff. There is even a tiny beveled mirror inside the lid, but it is badly pitted with age.

The euphanism 'to powder one's nose' likely dates from the early 20th century and was used by females when they wanted a polite expression to excuse themselves to go to the toilet.

No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

The snake is one of the animals that most possesses varied meanings and symbologies in diverse cultures. The serpents in Ancient Egypt have several references to their image in several species.

One is deceived who thinks that the snakes because they have a different aspect and that in many cause repulsion, would have a negative meaning.

The image of the serpents in Ancient Egypt were very well used by the Egyptians and especially by the pharaohs. They are considered an amulet of protection, and possessing a powerful energy that is able to block negative energies of people and environments.

Starfish cacti (Stapelia grandiflora) are also more morbidly called the carrion flower. These stinky, but spectacular, plants share similar traits to those from the carnivorous family in that they possess insect attracting flora (but are not carnivorous), which range in size from a couple of inches high to plants that bear 12-inch wide flowers. This plant species is native to South Africa, so growing starfish flowers usually requires warm, humid temperatures or a specialized greenhouse environment.

These plants aren’t exactly cactus but are members of the succulent group of plants. They are soft stemmed plants without spines, spreading out from a central point. These are thickly skinned and resemble carrion flesh.

Starfish flower cactus may produce amazing five-petaled flowers that exude a rather unpleasant odor. The scent attracts flies and other insects, which pollinate the blooms. Flowers are red to brown and may be mottled with a couple of colors.

"There is a bird available that possesses virtually every quality one could ask of such fowl. It is small (and thus easily kept in a relatively small area), it is quiet (its array of soft whistles and other noises is neither loud nor unpleasant to the ear), and it is one of the most beautiful and ornamental birds in the entire world. You want more? O.K., how about that it is fairly easy to obtain, relatively inexpensive, can be raised on feed products commonly available, and it requires no federal or state license to keep it.

I am speaking, of course, of the Mandarin Duck. A close relative of our North American Wood Duck, (they are the only two members of the genus Aix, the Mandarin being Aix galericulata and the Wood Duck being Aix sponsa. The Wood Duck is exclusively native to North America while the Mandarin is native to China, Japan, and Russia, where relatively small wild populations survive to the present day under government protection. Provence - 2016

Bond And Free

Love has earth to which she clings

With hills and circling arms about--

Wall within wall to shut fear out.

But Thought has need of no such things,

For Thought has a pair of dauntless wings.

On snow and sand and turn, I see

Where Love has left a printed trace

With straining in the world's embrace.

And such is Love and glad to be

But Thought has shaken his ankles free.

Thought cleaves the interstellar gloom

And sits in Sirius' disc all night,

Till day makes him retrace his flight

With smell of burning on every plume,

Back past the sun to an earthly room.

His gains in heaven are what they are.

Yet some say Love by being thrall

And simply staying possesses all

In several beauty that Thought fares far

To find fused in another star.

When the wagons leave the city

For the forest and further on

Painted wagons of the morning

Dusty roads where they have gone

Sometimes travelin' through the darkness

Met the summer comin' home

Fallen faces by the wayside

Looked as if they might have known

Oh, the sun was in their eye

And the desert that dry

In the country towns

Where the laughter sound

Oh, the dancing and the singing

Oh, the music when they played

Oh, the fire that they started

Oh, the girls with no regret

Sometimes they found it, sometimes they kept it

Often lost it along the way

Fought each other to possess it

Sometimes died in sight of day

Oh, the sun was in their eye

And the desert that dry

In the country town

Where the laughter sounds

Oh, the sun was in their eye

And the desert that dry

In the country towns

Where the laughter sound

"The Hardhead possesses one of the strangest names among Australian birds. It was formerly known as the ‘White-eyed Duck’, but this feature is present only on drakes, with females having dark eyes. Nevertheless, this discrepancy has never been an impediment to naming birds in the past — female Blackbirds are never black, for instance. The name ‘Hardhead’ has nothing to do with the density of the duck’s cranium, but stems from early taxidermists who found that the head was the most difficult part of the duck to process."

You possess me like no man ever

You know my deepest secrets.

Toy with my emotions.

No one touches my soul

Or affects my mood

the way only you do.

You make me joyous one moment,

then break me down into tears

until my mascara runs.

You make me

Long for a past love,

bring back a forgotten memory.

Forget for a moment a pain I feel now.

enthrall me

Inspire me

enliven me

You play with me every time you touch me

When you chose, you make me fall pathetically in love.

Mesmerize me.

Hold me powerless under your spell.

I cannot move until you are done with me.

Benedict reminds us that our health and wellbeing lie in recognition of the fact that none of us can possess infinite resource or time, and so will always need the unexpected stranger to supplement who and what we are. How do we inculcate in law and politics something of that recognition that otherness is not a matter for panic or despair; that the challenge or difficulty of the stranger, the cultural other, the sexual other, the vaguely threatening foreigner at our doors in popular mythology, is potentially gift? How do we inculcate a political morality which recognizes that these people are not going away, and that therefore our task is not to pretend that they can be made to but to work at how we actually engage in transforming our relations with them? That doesn’t of course immediately produce a magical solution, but it flags up the danger of yielding to the temptation of thinking that we can somehow will the stranger into oblivion.

-Rowan Williams, The Way of St. Benedict

Castell Coch can be seen on the hillside as you travel West outside Cardiff

This building is chiefly known as a romantic folly supposedly reproducing a small medieval Welsh chieftain's stronghold, built in the 1870s, for the 3rd Marquess of Bute to a design by William Burges, and possessing the most remarkable interior decoration. However, it was built upon the remains of a genuine 13th century castle built in two stages.

Humpback whale, Iceland

The humpback whale can be seen all around Icelandic waters. The humpback whale is much stockier than the other rorquals and has a characteristic warty nose. It can reach up to 17 m length and 40 t in weight. Humpback whales have exceptionally long, up to 2 m long pectoral fins. Humpbacks may slap the water's surface with one or both pectoral fins simultaneously.

In the early spring, the humpbacks begin their long journey from the Gulf of Mexico to Iceland. The whales swim for about a month before they reach the southern coastal waters of Iceland. By the end of October and early November, most of the humpback whales are well fed and prepared for their seasonal migration back to the Gulf of Mexico.

Humpback whale does not possess teeth, so it must capture its food using various hunting methods. One technique these whales use is known as bubble netting. Bubble netting is a group activity.

One group of whales will swim below a large group of fish and form a circle, which they use to herd the fish together. The group then begins blowing bubbles to enclose and shrink the circle of fish and compact the fish into a tight herd. Once they’ve herded the fish together, they can then take turns swimming through the herd consuming as many fish as possible.

Osprey found along the trail leading to the birding station in the Naples Botanical Gardens' 90 acre preserve. This osprey can be seen sitting in the tree daily. The osprey likes to eat the fish it catches here in the nearby small lake.

Wikipedia -The osprey or more specifically the western osprey (Pandion haliaetus) — also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk — is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings.

The osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica, although in South America it occurs only as a non-breeding migrant.

As its other common names suggest, the osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It possesses specialised physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey. As a result of these unique characteristics, it has been given its own taxonomic genus, Pandion and family, Pandionidae. Three subspecies are usually recognized. - Wikipedia

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a wolf-like canid that is native to Southeast Europe, Southwest Asia, South Asia, and regions of Southeast Asia. Compared with the Arabian wolf, which is the smallest of the gray wolves (Canis lupus), the jackal is smaller and possesses shorter legs, a shorter tail, a more elongated torso, a less-prominent forehead, and a narrower and more pointed muzzle. The golden jackal's coat can vary in color from a pale creamy yellow in summer to a dark tawny beige in winter. It is listed as 'least concern' on the IUCN Red List due to its widespread distribution and high density in areas with plenty of available food and optimum shelter

How I wish you could see the potential

The potential of you and me

It's like a book elegantly bound

But in a language that you can't read just yet

You gotta spend some time, love

You gotta spend some time with me

And I know that you'll find love

I will possess your heart

There are days when outside your window

I see my reflection as I slowly pass

And I long for this mirrored perspective

When we'll be lovers, lovers at last

You gotta spend some time, love

You gotta spend some time with me

And I know that you'll find love

I will possess your heart

I will possess your heart

I will possess your heart

You reject my advances and desperate pleas

I won't let you let me down so easily

So easily

Poem by Joni Mitchell

Fly, silly seabird, no dreams can possess you

No voices can blame you for sun on your wings

My gentle relations have names they must call me

For loving the freedom of all flying things

My dreams with the seagulls fly

Out of reach, out of cry

I came to the city and lived like old Crusoe

On an island of noise in a cobblestone sea

And the beaches were concrete and the stars paid a light bill

And the blossoms hung false on their store window trees

My dreams with the seagulls fly

Out of reach, out of cry

Out of the city and down to the seaside

To sun on my shoulders and wind in my hair

But sandcastles crumble and hunger is human

And humans are hungry for worlds they can't share

My dreams with the seagulls fly

Out of reach, out of cry

I call to the seagull who dives to the waters

And catches his silver-fine dinner alone

Crying, "Where are the footprints that danced on these beaches

And the hands that cast wishes that sunk like a stone?"

My dreams with the seagulls fly

Out of reach, out of cry

"Stop this day and night with me and you shall possess the origin of all poems,

You shall possess the good of the earth and sun,

(there are millions of suns left,)

You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through

the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,

You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,

You shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself."

Walt Whitman, from Song of Myself.

We do not feel that we possess a magic power of speaking to the Infinite; we merely witness the wonder of prayer, the wonder of man addressing himself to the Eternal. Contact with Him is not our achievement. It is a gift, coming down to us from on high like a meteor, rather than rising up like a rocket. Before the words of prayer come to the lips, the mind must believe in God’s willingness to draw near to us, and in our ability to clear the path for His approach. Such belief is the idea that leads us toward prayer.

--Abraham Joshua Heschel, Man’s Quest for God: Studies in Prayer and Symbolism

Violaceous Euphonia lives up to its name in beauty and sound, possessing both colorful plumage and melodious song. It is a widely distributed resident across northeastern and eastern South America, from Venezuela and Trinidad south to Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and southeastern Brazil. They occupy humid forest and forest edges, as well as parks and gardens, cocoa plantations, and citrus fruit orchards. Males have striking glossy violet to bluish black upperparts and deep golden yellow underparts and forehead, while females and juveniles are duller, mostly olivaceous above and olive yellow below. Violaceous Euphonias primarily are frugivorous, foraging alone or in small groups (including mixed flocks), but also eat nectar and insects when seasonally available. Galápagos tortoises possess two main shell forms that correlate with the biogeographic history of the species group. They exhibit a spectrum of carapace morphology ranging from "saddleback" (denoting upward arching of the front edge of the shell resembling a saddle) to "domed" (denoting a rounded convex surface resembling a dome). When a saddleback tortoise withdraws its head and forelimbs into its shell, a large unprotected gap remains over the neck, evidence of the lack of predation during the evolution of this structure.

Larger islands with humid highlands over 800 m (2,600 ft) in elevation, such as Santa Cruz, have abundant vegetation near the ground. Tortoises native to these environments tend to have domed shells and are larger, with shorter necks and limbs.

Saddleback tortoises originate from small islands less than 500 m (1,600 ft) in elevation with dry habitats (e.g. Española and Pinzón) that are more limited in food and other resources.

Two lineages of Galápagos tortoises possess the Island of Santa Cruz and when observed it is concluded that despite the shared similarities of growth patterns and morphological changes observed during growth, the two lineages and two sexes can be distinguished on the basis of distinct carapace features. Lineages differ by the shape of the vertebral and pleural scutes. Females have a more elongated and wider carapace shape than males.

Carapace shape changes with growth, with vertebral scutes becoming narrower and pleural scutes becoming larger during late ontogeny.

The term "hybrid mallard" refers to any duck with mixed parentage involving a mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), a species notorious for interbreeding with many other closely related duck species and domestic breeds.

Hybrids exhibit a mix of traits from both parent species, making their appearance highly variable and often a point of fascination for birders and hunters.

Common Hybrid Combinations

Mallards hybridize with a wide array of ducks, creating several recognized hybrid types:

Mallard x American Black Duck:

This is one of the most common hybrids in North America. Male hybrids typically look like a darker American Black Duck but possess some green on the head and sometimes the curled tail feathers of a mallard.

Mallard x Northern Pintail:

These hybrids are described as beautiful and unique, often showing a mix of the pintail's elegant shape and the mallard's head coloration.

Mallard x Gadwall (Brewer's Duck):

Named by John James Audubon, who initially mistook it for a new species, the Brewer's duck is a less common but recognized hybrid.

Mallard x Domestic Duck Breeds:

Hybrids with domestic ducks (which are all derived from the mallard except for the Muscovy) are frequently seen in urban parks. These often display unusual plumage variations, such as the distinctive white "bib" or chest patches, or larger size and unique crests.

Conservation Concerns:

While fascinating, the widespread ability of mallards to produce fertile offspring with related species poses a significant conservation concern. When domestic or feral mallards are introduced into the wild, they can "genetically pollute" the gene pools of sensitive, localized species, potentially leading to the extinction of pure indigenous populations, such as the Hawaiian Duck and the Florida Mottled Duck.

Introduction

Second Coming of the Lord | Christian Song | "The Substance of Christ Is God"

I

God who becomes flesh is called Christ, so the Christ that can give people truth is called God. It is not too much to say like that. For He possesses the substance of God. He possesses God's disposition and wisdom in His work, which are unreachable by man. Those who call themselves Christ yet cannot do the work of God are frauds. Christ is not merely the manifestation of God on earth, but the particular flesh assumed by God, as He carries out, completes His work among man. Christ is not merely the manifestation of God on earth, but instead, the particular flesh assumed by God, as He carries out, completes His work among man.

II

This flesh can't be replaced by just any man. This flesh can adequately bear God's work on earth. This flesh can express the disposition of God, can well represent God and provide man with life. Those who pass themselves off as Christ, sooner or later will all fall. For although they call themselves as Christ, they possess none of the substance of Christ. So God says that the authenticity of Christ cannot be defined by man, but this is answered by God Himself, and this is decided by God Himself. So God says that the authenticity of Christ cannot be defined by man, but this is answered by God Himself, and this is decided by God Himself. So, if you truly wish to seek the way of life, you must first acknowledge, it is by coming to the human world that He bestows on man the way of life. It is during the last days that He comes to the world to give to man the way of life. He bestows the way of life on man by coming to the human world. Not the past; it is happening today. It is happening today.

Iguana (/ɪˈɡwɑːnə/, Spanish: [iˈɣwana]) is a genus of omnivorous lizards native to tropical areas of Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Iguanas can range from 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 m) including their tail. The two species of lizard within the genus Iguana possess a dewlap, a row of spines running down their backs to their tails, and a tiny "third eye" on their heads. This light-sensing organ is known as the parietal eye, visible as a pale scale on the top of the head, and cannot make out details, just brightness. Behind their necks are small scales which resemble spokes, known as tuberculate scales. These scales may be a variety of colors and are not always visible from close distances. They have a large round scale on their cheeks known as a subtympanic shield.

The tympanum, the iguana's eardrum, is located above the subtympanic shield (or "earshield") behind each eye. Iguanas are often hard to spot because they blend into their surroundings. Their coloration enables them to hide from larger predators.
