With bright, striking colors, red dahlias symbolize perseverance and the ability to overcome. They serve as a reminder of the inner strength everyone possesses, even in dark times. Therefore, they're the perfect gift for someone who is going through a rough patch or recovering from an illness.
Dahlias have been a floral favourite for generations and it’s easy to see why. Their bright blooms, vast variation, and heart-warming history make these flowers special in many ways. Here are 17 facts about Dahlias.
1. There are currently 42 species of Dahlias
2. Dahlias were the favourite flower of the court of Queen Victoria and Marie Antoinette.
3. When the Dahlia was initially discovered, it was declared a vegetable, due to the fact that the tubers are edible. However, whilst the tubers were part of an Aztec diet, the Dahlia delicacy failed to take off in Europe.
4. Dahlias peak from Mid-Summer, which is later than a lot of other flowers making them a great way to extend your summer flower displays.
5. Dahlias can be found in almost any colour; however, you will not find a blue one. This is not due to a lack of trying; Breeders are still trying to discover a way of creating these blue blooms.
6. Not only is the Dahlia the National flower of Mexico, but it is also the official flower of both San Francisco and Seattle.
7. Depending on the variety, Dahlias can be dainty or daunting and can grow to be 35cm in diameter. Dwarf varieties are great for flower beds, whilst some giant varieties have been known to grow to over 6m tall.
8. The first Double Flower Dahlias varieties were bred in 1815.
9. The Dahlia was first recorded by Westerners back in 1615. Back then they were called by their original name which was Acoctli
10. Dahlias are officially part of the Asteraceae family. This flower family includes some favourites including Asters, Daisies. Sunflowers and Chrysanthemums. These flowers are classed as part of this family due to their astral appearance. The word Asteraeceae derives from the Greek word for star. This is a reference to flowers that resemble a star with surrounding rays.
Francesco Biamonti

I received a bouquet of tulips the weekend before last and I kept them well past their "sell by" date as I wanted to photograph them while they were at the early stages of decay. I find they possess a certain beauty even at this stage of their life.
I thought of you when I saw these beautiful forest pearls... if I could string them together to give to you... but there are some things too beautiful to possess.

Possessing no macro lens at the moment a shot of a butterfly is currently a rarity on my Flickr stream.
Here's an exception, in the form of a photo taken yesterday whilst on a walk around St Aidans Nature Reserve. Other commitments meant it would have to be a mid day visit which on such a sunny day doesn't help wildlife photography. We had seen a few of these lovely butterflies and they all seemed pretty manic as they darted around looking for a suitable flower to descend upon. Thankfully I just had long enough to photograph this one.

Asian rhinos, in contrast to their African counterparts, possess a distinctive and heavily armored appearance, owing to the numerous folds in their skin. These magnificent creatures are herbivores, primarily feeding on a diet consisting of tall grasses, shrubs, leaves, and fruits. As they graze, they play a significant role in shaping and restructuring the landscapes they inhabit. However, the unfortunate truth is that some Asian rhinoceros species are on the brink of extinction.
Vietnam's last Javan rhinos, a critically endangered subspecies, tragically became extinct in 2010. One of the most pressing threats to these remarkable animals is poaching. Rhinoceroses are mercilessly hunted by poachers for their horns, which fetch exorbitant prices on the black market. East Asia, particularly Vietnam, stands out as the largest market for rhino horns.
Rhino horns, despite being composed of keratin, the same protein found in hair and fingernails, are coveted for their supposed therapeutic properties. Some cultures grind these horns into dust and consume it as traditional medicine or use it for ornamental purposes. Astonishingly, the price of rhino horns, when measured by weight, can rival that of gold on the black market.
Among Asian rhino species, both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros possess two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn. Regrettably, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categorizes the black rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros as critically endangered, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures from extinction.

These birds possess a brilliant plumage, and a coloring that is surprisingly well-suited to the Amazon jungle’s bright fruits, flowers and vivid green canopies. Different species of macaws possess varying bright color combinations, such as blue and gold or green and red, along with sporting beautiful long graceful tails. A macaw’s facial feather pattern is highly distinctive and thought to be as unique as a fingerprint. They have long toes and sharp claws which they use to latch onto branches and examine items, and their first and fourth toes point backward. They’ve also been observed using their powerful beak as a third leg!

The happy life does not mean loving what we possess, but possessing what we love. Possession of what we love takes place in an act of cognition, in seeing, in intuition, in contemplation.

The County of Essex – Scenes of Essex
I am an Essex lad. It is a county that possesses a City, a number of Large and Small Towns, New Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Ports. It has anything from Modern Architecture to Roman History and pre Roman ruins. There are Museums, Galleries, an RHS Garden and is open to the National Open Gardens Scheme. It even boasts a Secret Nuclear Bunker, although everyone knows where it is.
It is a place of Parks and open spaces open to the public, all those areas that were closed off due to Covid are now open to the public. We can still enjoy the many footpaths that run everywhere from Coast to Countryside. There are a large number of wonderful churches, of timbered houses, windmills, pub signs, post boxes, blue plaques and sculpture just put there for the photographer and lastly, much, much more.
Here is a collection of items that start off with Heybridge on the coast, a delightful place to visit for two or three hours walking around the seawall or just sitting alongside the canal having a pint or a cuppa watching the boats go past and there are quite a few of them in at the right time.

As a riverine country Bangladesh possesses more than 800 rivers. In monsoon these Rivers become fulfill with water. So water and waterways plays important role in the economy in Bangladesh.
In monsoon when most of the roads of rural area submerged with river or haor water., boats have become the popular transport among the people. They go one place to another and carry their daily goods through boats.
In the picture u can see the boat carrying passenger in the time of sunset. The warm colour of setting sun and the black cloud makes the world a mysterious place . It gives the river a mysterious look. All the element even a boat becomes mysterious in that magical light.

A digital creation based on one of my photos of a beautiful meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) also known as meadow queen or lady of the meadow.
I love this plant, it is just so beautiful!
And it has given us much we can be grateful for:
The whole herb possesses a pleasant taste and flavour...and it is used to flavour wine, beer, and many kinds of vinegar. The flowers can be added to stewed fruit and jams, giving them a subtle almond flavour. Some foragers also use the flowers to flavour desserts such as panna cotta. It has many medicinal properties.
In 1838, Raffaele Piria obtained salicylic acid from the buds of meadowsweet. Thereafter in 1899, scientists at the firm Bayer used salicylic acid derived from meadowsweet to synthesise acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), which was named after the old botanical name for meadowsweet, Spiraea ulmaria. The name then became aspirin.

Violaceous Euphonia - male - wild - the species lives up to its name in beauty and sound, possessing both colorful plumage and melodious song. It is a widely distributed resident across northeastern and eastern South America, from Venezuela and Trinidad south to Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and southeastern Brazil. They occupy humid forest and forest edges, as well as parks and gardens, cocoa plantations, and citrus fruit orchards. Males have striking glossy violet to bluish black upperparts and deep golden yellow underparts and forehead, while females and juveniles are duller, mostly olivaceous above and olive yellow below. Violaceous Euphonias primarily are frugivorous, foraging alone or in small groups (including mixed flocks), but also eat nectar and insects when seasonally available. birdsoftheworld.org
