Cuando uno rememora los cuentos de hadas, las historias que de pequeño solía escucharlas de boca de nuestros padres, o de nuestros abuelos, siempre nos viene a la memoria el escenario en el que se desarrollaban en nuestra imaginación. Un bosque sombrío, húmedo y lleno de grandes árboles, llenaba de misterio y curiosidad las peripecias de Pulgarcito, de Hensel y Gretel, de la Bella Durmiente o de Caperucita Roja. Estos bosques, cuando uno se hace mayor, dejan de existir en nuestra imaginación y parece que se esfuman de nuestra conciencia como un azucarillo en el cafe. Parajes como este, (El castañar de El Tiemblo) nos ayudan a recordar que estos bosques todavía existen, y que tienen una capacidad de sugerencia y evocación suficiente para imaginar el desarrollo de mil y una historias, a cual más fantástica y atrayente. En cualquier época del año es recomendable visitar el bosque, pero hay que reconocer que es en Otoño cuando despliega toda su fuerza, especialmente por el contraste cromático de los castaños con los sotos de robles, servales, acebos y pinos de la zona.

A famous mining region centered on the city of Dalnegorsk in eastern Russia, 300 km northeast of Vladivostok. The name "Tetyukhe" or "Tetjuche" (meaning "valley of the wild pigs") is the old Chinese name for Dalnegorsk and can be encountered on a few old mineral labels.
The Verkhnee deposit was first developed in 1912. Boron mineralization was prospected in 1945.
The region comprises 9 different deposits.

I really like pictures of weeds...I don't know why but I do. Anyway, I've had this one processed and sitting on my computer for weeks. I've hesitated posting it because I don't know if I'm the only one who finds this cool or not. I think sometimes I care too much about what others think of an image instead of focusing on the fact that I love it and that's all that really matters.
Looking forward to hearing if I'm alone on this one or not. Feeling a little vulnerable about this...I think because I love this weed stuff so much and it's kind of the direction I want to go in with more photos but I have no clue if anyone else would like this kind of thing!! Help...I need someone to snap me out of this funk today.

Fastnet Rock (Irish: An Charraig Aonair, meaning Rock of Solitude or Lonesome Rock) is a small clay-slate island with quartz veins and the most southerly point of Ireland, 6.5 km southwest of Cape Clear Island (Oileán Chléire) in County Cork, which is itself 13 km (8 miles) from the mainland. It lies in the Atlantic Ocean 11.3 km south of mainland County Cork, at latitude 51.37°N. It rises to about 30 m above low water mark. Study of the documentary record suggests that the name is from Old Norse Hvastann-ey 'sharp tooth island'.
Divided into Fastnet Rock proper and the much smaller Little Fastnet to the south by a 10 m (30 ft) wide channel, it also had the nickname 'Ireland's Teardrop' as it was the last part of the country seen by Irish emigrants to the United States in the 19th century as they sailed past it.

Eran las 6:00 AM del 5/08/2010 cuando despertaba y tras vestirme raudo y veloz tomaba el coche y partía hacia Albarracín, en el camino al pasar por Calamocha (Conocido en España por ser uno de los lugares que marca mínimas en invierno, alguna vez los -25ºC), observe que el coche me daba una temperatura de 10ºC(baja para ser España en Agosto), había algo de bruma ya que el día anterior llovió por la tarde. Antes quise pasar por Peracense, donde hay un castillo muy particular por lo camuflado que queda con el entorno. Y puede realizar algunas fotos antes pasar por Albarracín (di una vuelta entera por los exteriores del castillo).

Peracense
Situación: La fortaleza de Peracense se halla colgada sobre un apartado risco de la sierra Menera, en el municipio de Peracense, a unos 45 kilómetros de Teruel.
Historia: El origen de este castillo no está nada claro. Según parece, por los restos arqueológicos hallados en sus proximidades, debió de ser la defensa de un pequeño poblado medieval, conocido por los lugareños como la Villeta, lugar del que procedería la imagen medieval de la Virgen con el Niño que se conserva en la iglesia parroquial de la localidad. Según información manejada por Cristóbal Guitart ya existía en 1284, pues fue utilizado por las tropas reales como punto de partida para la conquista de Albarracín. No obstante, también se han encontrado restos celtíberos y romanos, lo que da idea de lo ancestral de su origen. La fortaleza propiamente dicha, y que podemos ver hoy día, fue edificada hacia la primera mitad del siglo XIV para uso estrictamente militar.
A pesar de su situación, ya que se encuentra mucho más próximo a Teruel que a Daroca, y justo en el límite que durante la Edad Media separaba los territorios de ambas comunidades, el castillo de Peracense estaba administrado por alcaides nombrados por la comunidad darocense. El castillo se encuentra ubicado junto al monte o peña de San Ginés, todo un hito geográfico ya señalado al citar los límites espaciales de Teruel, comunidad que se forma con parte del territorio ya conquistado a los musulmanes por las tropas de Daroca, para que quede claro hasta dónde se extienden una y otra.
La construcción del castillo de Peracense, como la de otros castillos vecinos fue fruto de la rivalidad medieval entre los reinos de Castilla y Aragón. Su misión era la de controlar uno de los posibles puntos de acceso por los que las tropas castellanas podían penetrar en Aragón en momentos de conflicto, y evitar así su llegada a todo el Valle del Jiloca y a localidades tan importantes como Santa Eulalia, Villafranca, Monreal del Campo o la propia ciudad de Teruel. No obstante, parece que el acceso de las tropas castellanas podía hacerse desde otros puntos cercanos y de más difícil defensa, de manera que este castillo apenas fue atacado ni asediado.
Una de las razones de la relativa falta de uso de este castillo es que siempre se encontró adecuadamente protegido por otros elementos defensivos del entorno, por un lado la torre de planta rectangular que se levanta en el ya citado cerro de San Ginés, el principal punto de control visual por su ubicación en una elevación del terreno dentro de un entorno eminentemente llano, y por otro el castillo de Ródenas, un gran desconocido de la castellología que sin embargo le sirvió de pantalla protectora. La más clara prueba de ello es que del de Ródenas apenas quedan los restos de algún muro en la parte superior, mientras que en el de Peracense los restos han tenido siempre mayor importancia, aun antes de la reciente restauración. Como el castillo de Ródenas sí que pertenecía a la Comunidad de Teruel, se plantea otra posibilidad, que ambos castillos se mantuvieran para proteger las posesiones de sus respectivas comunidades ante posibles conflictos entre ellas, más que dedicarse a defender Aragón de la amenaza de incursiones por parte de los castellanos.
Como ya se ha dicho, no existen citas importantes que atestigüen asedios de este castillo por parte de tropas enemigas durante la Edad Media. Hay que esperar a los episodios bélicos de la primera guerra carlista para documentar de nuevo su utilización parcial.
Descripción: El castillo de Peracense se mimetiza con el paisaje de manera que parece formar parte de él como si de un fenómeno geológico se tratara. La forma que adquiere es la de un espolón de un barco varado en la montaña del que destaca la torre principal por su altura y rotundidad.
La fortaleza es de planta curadrada irregular, ocupa unos 4.000 metros cuadrados, se divide en tres recintos concéntricos y está situada sobre una escarpada peña, siendo inexpugnable por varios de sus flancos. El recinto interior es la plaza de armas, de unos 60 x 40 metros, y en ella se puede observar una especie de nichos que debieron ser utilizados para almacenar víveres y para que los guerreros se resguardasen del frío.
Sus laderas norte y este son inexpugnables, y en el sur y oeste se levantó una muralla en forma de ángulo recto de unos 3 metros de espesor, reforzada por tres torreones rectangulares.
La entrada al castillo es un estrecho portillo al borde del precipicio. Hay saeteras y subsisten bastantes almenas. Sólo queda la pared frontal de lo que fue la Torre del Homenaje.

Foto tomada en el final del cañón del río Lobos, justo donde nace el río Ucero.
Era domingo por la mañana, con bastante frío... y qué mejor que ir a la Ermita de San Bartolome de Ucero, claro con la nevada.. el camino estaba completamente blanco. Decir que no fui el único valiente que decidió caminar por la nieve, había bastantes paseantes. Primer paso fue dejar el coche a la entrada del cañón y subir andando, ya que la pista estaba completamente blanca e incluso helada en alguna zona.
Río Ucero: El río Ucero nace en el Manadero de "La Galiana", también llamado "Manantial de la Galiana", "Fuente de la Galiana" y "Nacedero del río Ucero", que se encuentra situado a la salida del Cañón del río Lobos.
El río Lobos, que nace en la provincia de Burgos, recoge las escorrentías y drenajes subterráneos de los materiales no permeables y de alguna pequeña fuente kárstica.
Al llegar a la Sierra de Cabrejas se encuentra con materiales calizos del Cretácico y se encaja en un angosto y magnífico cañón que se prolonga hasta el Nacedero del río Ucero.
Se estima que la velocidad del agua al recorrer el acuífero es baja, aproximadamente 10 kms. a la semana (60m/h). En el Nacedero el caudal medio es de 650 l/sg, la temperatura del agua de 10º C, y posee 8,3 cm3 de oxígeno disuelto por litro de agua.

Photo taken at the end of the river Lobos Cannyon at the point where the Ucero river springs up to life.
It was a cold Sunday morning ... and there was nothing better than hiking in the snow to the San Batolome de Ucero hermitage. The road was completely covered in snow. I wasn't the only brave one to venture in the snow though - there were a lot of other hikers around. First, I had to leave the car at the beginning of the cannyon and then climb up, since the road was clomplety covered in snow and even ice in some parts.
Ucero River: The source of the river is in "La Galiana", also known as "Manantial (spring) de la Galiana", "Fuente (foutain) de la Galiana" and "Nacedero (source) del río Ucero", and is located at the end of the Lobos river cannyon.
The Lobos river, which begins in the province of Burgos, sweeps non-permeable materials from the undercurrents and runoffs as well as some karstic debri.
When it runs trhough Sierra de Cabrejas, the river collects chalk sediments from the Cretaceous period and runs through a narrow but magnificent cannyon until it reaches the source of the Ucero river.
The speed of the water is estimated to be low, aprox. 10km per week (60m/h). The average flow at the source of the river is 650l/sec/, the temperature of the water, 10º C and contains 8,3 cm3 dissolved oxygen per litre of water.

I have always liked the Sepia tone, although an abundance of fancy filters and processing options available at the click of a button now, has unfortunately relegated it to the pile of least used. There was a time when I used it a lot and I too have abandoned it lately, preferring brighter colours or simple black and whites.
I was looking at this photo the other day and it had a very melancholic look about it, such wide open spaces and long distances a wildebeest must travel for fresh grass. Never stopping for more than a few days at a destination. Perpetual travellers. Perpetual rain chasers. Never standing still. Never at home. An emotion best captured by Sepia.

A ria de Aveiro estende-se, pelo interior, paralelamente ao mar, numa distância de 45 quilómetros e com uma largura máxima de onze quilómetros, no sentido Este-Oeste, desde Ovar até Mira.
A Ria é o resultado do recuo do mar, com a formação de cordões litorais que, a partir do século XVI, formaram uma laguna que constitui um dos mais importantes e belos acidentes hidrográficos da costa portuguesa.
Abarca onze mil hectares, dos quais seis mil estão permanentemente alagados, desdobra-se em quatro importantes canais ramificados em esteiros que circundam um sem número de ilhas e ilhotes. Jacinto, permitindo o acesso ao Porto de Aveiro, de embarcações de grande calado.
Rica em peixes e aves aquáticas, possui grandes planos de água, locais de eleição para a prática de todos os desportos náuticos. Ainda que tenha vindo a perder, de ano para ano, a importância que já teve na economia aveirense, a produção de sal, utilizando técnicas milenares, é, ainda, uma das actividades tradicionais mais características de Aveiro.

The Aveiro Lagoon (Ria de Aveiro) is a coastal lagoon in Portugal. It is located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, south the municipalitiy of Espinho and north of Mira (to the north of the Cape Mondego). Its average area covers approximately 75 km². It is named after the city of Aveiro, which is the chief urban centre located nearby the lagoon. Other urban centres near the Ria de Aveiro are Ílhavo, Gafanha da Nazaré, Estarreja, Ovar and Esmoriz. Some beaches nearby include those of Barra, Costa Nova, Torreira, Vagueira, Furadouro, Cortegaça and Praia de Mira. There are also beaches in the São Jacinto Peninsula.

A clearwing or hummingbird moth at Mizell Farms Nursery near Folsom, Louisiana. Several of these moths were searching the flowers for food.
On Sept. 11th Mizell Farms wiil have a Hummungbird Festival. The birds will live trapped, ID'd, weighed and tagged and turned loose. I believe LSU is doing the bird handling. They do this each year and normally catch about 50 to 70 birds. They are not harmed and it is done for science and hummingbird studies.

It seems fairy lights give you a very unusual facial structure, all the photos looked so funny. I had to run outside at 11.30 when I got home after realizing the photos I'd initially taken hadn't worked out, sorry it's a rush job :( I seemed to spend the entire day sleeping, or streaming tv, it's been one of those miserable days when you don't feel like dealing with anything and sit round eating vast amounts of chocolate instead :P I've now run out of House, NCIS, Castle & How I Met Your Mother - it's traumatic! I have nothing left to watch, any suggestions of good stuff are very welcome.

Anyhow I'm desperate for sleep as I'm up at 6 again for work, 4.5 hours sleep - hoorah. Night flickrites!

the day has finally come. i'm done with school. i mentally graduated about two years ago, and now that it's finally here my brain doesn't understand. no more rehearsals, no more homework, no more countless hours wasted sitting in a hot classroom.
and now i can return to posting daily :) :) :) :).
i've decided that i take way too many photos that nobody sees. and because of this i've made myself a brand new blog! for outtakes from this shoot as well as others, paid photoshoots (seniors, weddings, etc etc.), and just other random stuff that i don't put on flickr because i'm really OCD about clogging up my photostream. so check it out :)
and feel free to ask me a question while you're at it.

One of the many ground squirrels (aka marmots or groundhogs) of the Grand Canyon. Taken on the South Rim trail with a 55mm (equiv. 82mm), no crop. Despite the signs, the cute furry balls are clearly fed by the hords of tourists, otherwise they wouldn't display this behaviour (and size !).

I don't really need to say much here. It was snowing most of the day and while being agitatedly watched by his partner, this swan decided to go on a walkabout on the frozen lake.
Now, those that know me will know that I am not in the habit of blowing my own trumpet, but I am so delighted with the fact that I have had a photograph of Loch Ard published in Outdoor Photography magazine, that I wanted to let you know that this would not have been possible without the support of my flickr friends and contacts who have supported, critiqued and given me the confidence to believe that I could have got to this stage, so to all you guys and lasses out their who are just starting or trying to improve all the aspects of this wonderful art, my message is , dont give up... I didnt know one end of a digital SLR from the other three years ago, but I asked hundreds of questions of my friend on flickr and learned that they are only too willing to help and encourage... So this is for them!!.... many thanks!!
