6º Premio de concurso Canarias y su Gente 2009 de Canarias 7
Shot this morning in the lake sammamish state park, south of Lake Sammamish. i arrived there around 6:45 am. stayed about two hours observing the birds. more animals compared to marymoor park, but nature here is far less interesting in my opinion. fog over the water wasn't that big either, but fine enough to have good bird shots. as yesterday morning, i only carried two lenses. the 70-200 f4 L and my big 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L. Since birds were the main goal this morning, i only used the latter.
it's actually the first time i'm concentrating at catching birds in flight. i understand what it feels now when i succeed at doing so. it's immensely satisfactory.
100-400 f4.5-5.6 L

After two months of volcano eruptions in Iceland, Fimmvörðuháls from March 21 - April 13. and then Eyjafjallajökull from April 14 to May 23. Many great adventures and phototrips, I finally got the change do do what I really love about photograpy, SEASCAPES!.
The sunset and clouds were not so dramatic this weekend, but I also like seascapes during "blue hour" and minimalism scenes. The natural rock sculptures Reynisdrangar, at Vik in Myrdal, are usually been photographed from the other side, the eas side, so I prefer the west side of them. The waves on this coastline in Reynisfjara area often huge, and sometimes deadly, but on this night however the ocean was strangely calm, my boots got flushed anyway but that's a different story.
Cheers, Skarpi

The Holy Monastery of Simonos Petra, or more simply Simonopetra, is without doubt the most daring construction on the Holy Mountain. It stands proudly at a height of 330 metres on the end of a rocky mountain range.
The Monastery was founded by the Blessed Simon the Myrrhobletes around 1257, as a result of a vision. The whole of the building work, the Life of the Saint assures us, was accomplished as the result of divine intervention. In 1363 the Monastery was renovated with generous donations from a Serb despot, John Uglesha, who is regarded as the Monastery's second founder. In the Third Typikon, Simonopetra occupies 23rd place among the then monasteries of Athos; today it holds thirteenth place in the hierarchy.
Unfortunately, among the dates which are milestones in the history of the Monastery are those inauspicious days when it was afflicted with the scourge of fire. In 1570 the Monastery, together with its valuable archive, was destroyed by a great conflagration. This resulted in the loss of documents of inestimable historical value. It also explains why we know so little about the Monastery in the Byzantine period.
The good relations which developed between Simonopetra and the Princes of Wallachia in the period of Turkish rule made possible its recovery. However, there was another fire in 1622, causing further damage. Simonopetra, which had been a coenobium, became idiorrythmic in the 17th century. Although never looted by pirates, the intolerable taxes of the Turks drove the Monastery to decline and abandonment. By the heroic efforts of the priest-monk Ioasaph of Mytilene, Asimopetra (as Simonopetra was called in the period of Turkish occupation) began to function again in the late 18th century. The 19th century saw the building of the multi-storeyed building on the south side. At the end of the same century, in 1891, yet another disastrous fire swept away, yet again, the older buildings and the Monastery's treasures.
In the present century, Simonopetra has experienced a period of recovery and of increasing prestige in the Orthodox world - particularly after the liberation of the Holy Mountain from the Turks and under the enlightened ladership of the Abbots Neophytos, Ioannikios, and Ieronymos. In the 1950s, however, a period of decline set in and in 1963, when Athos celebrated a millennium of life, the prospects for the future were gloomy. But the 1970s were a time when there was a gradual revival of Athonite monasticism. In 1973 a new 20-member brotherhood from the Meteora established itself at the Monastery. The Monastery of Simonos Petra once had a large number of metochia with fertile farm land. The oldest of these would appear to be Petriotiko in Sithonia. Today, best known are St Charalampus in Thessaloniki, the Ascension in Athens, the Nunnery of the Annunciation at Ormylia in Chalcidice, and three others in France. It is also worth mentioning the metochi of Michael Voda in Bucharest, dedicated to the Monastery in 1566 and confiscated by the Romanian Government in 1863.
Simonopetra, because of the restricted space of its site, is not one of those monasteries where we can see autonomous, clearly distinguished buildings. The katholikon is dedicated to the Nativity of Christ and in its original form was built around 1600, while the form it takes today took shape after the fire of 1891. The Monastery has four chapels within its precinct and eight outside.
The Monastery's archive contains a host of documents in Greek, Turkish, and Romanian, together with inscriptions, and musical and other manuscripts, to which must be added its printed books. However, it must be pointed out that almost the whole of the archival material is post-Byzantine.
The sacristy contains a treasury of works of art, consisting of icons, vestments, silverware, antimensia, seals, and engravings. However, the most important treasure of Simonopetra is the left hand of St Mary Magdalene - she is regarded as 'co-founder' of the Monastery - which has remained whole for two thousand years. The Monastery today has a community of 50 well-educated and active monks.

The Wave is a spectacular sandstone formation on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes in the beautiful and rugged Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, … just south of the Utah-Arizona border about halfway between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona.
This incredible formation can be reached by hiking approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) across rugged, trailless landscape, making the round-trip to and from The Wave a nearly 6-mile (9.7-kilometer) hike that climbs about 350 feet (107 meters) in altitude [sic]. The area can be really hot in summer (100 F +), so it is best to start the hike early. --from Wiki
Well, my friend and I hiked this late, staying over sunset in The Wave. It is an incredibly beautiful area, and I'd love to get back there.
Hiking back through the darkness was pretty exhilarating, but I could see it being nearly impossible and very stressful without a GPS. Carins are few and far between, and nearly impossible to locate at night, even with flashlights. Fortunately, there are a couple washes that cross at pretty identifiable areas on the trail; identifiable enough where we could see by a crescent moon and be okay.

The Large White is common throughout Europe, North Africa and are often in agricultural areas, meadows and parkland ! It is a strong flier and the British population is reinforced in most years by migrations from the continent !
ScottSmith14227 ~Reports of scattered Large White in the Northeastern United States (New York, Rhode Island and Maine) over the past century are of a dubious nature and indicate either accidental transport or intentional release ! Such introductions threaten to firmly establish this agricultural pest in North America !
The wings are white, with black tips on the forewings of both males and females, the female also has two black spots on each forewing ! The underside is a pale greenish and serves as excellent camouflage when at rest. The black markings are generally darker in the summer brood its wingspan is 5 to 6 cm !
The female lays batches of 20 to 100 yellow eggs on plants in the cabbage family and can be a pest on food crops ! They seem to have a preference for cultivated varieties of cabbage and brussels sprouts ! (Brassica olerace) The caterpillars are yellowish green with yellow lines and black spots and feed in groups in plain view on the leaf surface !

This hawk was shot through a large caged in area with my long lens. I had a hard time capturing this beautiful bird because I was trying to focus on him, not the fence that was directly in front of him. I had to get the dof just right so that the fence did not show up. This was one of the shots that actually came out pretty well.

The spectacular view of geothermal landscape in Landmannalaugar.
Landmannalaugar (Icelandic, meaning the people's pools) is a region near the volcano
Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcano; over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the volcano since 874. During the Middle Ages, Icelanders called the volcano the "Gateway to Hell.
The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and the area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolit. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white. Two of the most popular mountains among hikers are Bláhnúkur (meaning "blue peak") and Brennisteinsalda. (meaning "sulphur wave").

"I could stay there for a lifetime"
Better days with brighter sunshines are coming. Everyone's "Woohoo !" !
- This title also tries to make a comparison between the ephemeral poppies, and our human condition, which is ephemeral as well, but in another way(s)... -
This afternoon, i came back home earlier than usual. After two fruitless hours in front off my tv, i decided to look out the window.
The weather was cloudy and we almost couldn't see the sun. I had to wait before going outside with my camera.
And there was not much to do inside. Actually i didn't really check out what i could do because i wanted to breathe some refreshing and sunny air, and maybe to take some pictures as well...
But i hoped this was not going to last long.
Twenty minutes later, without asking myself more questions, i opened the door and jumped outside.
Sometimes you easily become aware of things, habits you'd always like to live with... Your will can change everything without a lot of efforts.
I decided to ride my bike if ever the clouds would have liked to wring themselves.
Though despite that i put rain clothes into my bag, nothing happened.
In fact, i couldn't know that the bad weather that persisted this entire week was going to change into a beautiful and sunny afternoon allowing me to find my smile back.
At that moment of the day, when the sun suddenly appeared from behind the clouds now disapearing, i found a wheat field full of poppies. The first one this year !
I couldn't even dream of it !
The horizon was immense, i couldn't see anything but wheat, and wheat, and poppies... And the sun was wonderfully reflecting on the wheat dancing with the wind... The sun was not so hot on my skin, and sometimes the wind was a little cold. But it was an intense feeling, only the fact of being here, lost in the immensity.
I could stay there for a lifeftime.
I only stayed two hours, or more. I don't know. In fact i don't even remember.
I was feeling alive for the very first time this year :D

Et salut à vous tous mes amis,

This moc is part of the story for my GoH Challenge 1 Category C in eurobricks.
Nocturnus is in great danger and Lorivor came to Gunman's mind.
Lorivor is the King of Marrach Briollag, City of Avalonia.
Gunman decided to travel to Marrach Briollag with his faithful soldiers and friends, Hlias and Markus .
==============================================================
"In the meanwhile"
Sharion, son of King Lorivor, took a guard from the palace with him and left on a long journey to a place northwest of Siccus Badlands in Nocturnus.
A druid named Bergish is rumored to have lived there 600 years ago .
The myth says that of all the places Bergish met during his travels to all lands of Historica, he loved Avalonian landscapes the most.
Because he was old, Bergish stopped the journeys, and passed his last days peacefully at his home. Where he started experiments trying to create a magic potion which would spread to the place near his house in order to transform the barren Nocturnian landscape
into the lush beautiful landscape he had visited in Avalonia.
It was his wish to successfully create the potion before he last closed his eyes, and myths say his wish came true...
Myths also say that strange animals live there and Sharion wants to take their heads back to Avalonia.
"Little did he know that after the death of Bergish the cottage was occupied by the Wolfclan. Evil creatures , half man, half wolf who are hostile against anyone
passing the bridge leading from Nocturnus to their homelands.."
Rumors around nocturnus say that any Nocturnus hunters who dared to go hunt near there never came back.
So no Nocturnian has ever went to that land and returned.
================================================================
A big surprise was waiting for him at the palace..
Lorivor heard about his coming to town and was expecting him in a not so friendly way..
He wanted Gunman to help him find his son and in exchange he would give him money.
Gunman refused the money, and told Lorivor that he wanted Lorivor's soldiers to fight with Nocturnus against the Black Spire.
After a lot of thoughts Lorivor agreed to the deal.
Sir Gunman the lurikeen accepted the challenge to go find Sharion because Nocturnus lands were in true danger from the Black Spire hordes
and Lord Syslith needs the recruits from the town of Marrach Briollag.
In the 17th century, Sultan Ahmet I wished to build an Islamic place of worship that would be even better than the Hagia Sophia, and the mosque named for him is the result. The two great architectural achievements now stand next to each other in Istanbul's main square [...].
Inside, the high ceiling is lined with the 20,000 blue tiles that give the mosque its popular name. Fine examples of 16th-century Iznik design, the oldest tiles feature flowers, trees and abstract patterns. The overall effect is one of the most beautiful sights in Istanbul. The Iznik tiles can be seen in the galleries and and on the north wall above the main entrance. The remaining tiles, which have a less delicate design, were made in Kütahya.
The interior is lit with 260 windows, which were once filled with 17th-century stained glass. Sadly, this has been lost and replaced with inferior replicas.

The wispy seed heads of the Pasque Flower are attractive in their own right.
[...], another common name for Pasque flower (or "Pasqueflower") is "Easter flower." Pasque is the Old French spelling for "Easter," and it is around that time of year that the plant blooms, in some regions. According to Botanical.com, the famous herbalist, John Gerard, "informs us that he himself was 'moved to name' this the Pasque Flower, or Easter Flower, because of the time of its appearance, it being in bloom from April to June."

I know, the English name is Spindle, but in the Netherlands we call this shrub "kardinaalsmuts" which means "cardinal's cap" :).
The wood was traditionally used for the making of spindles for spinning wool; this use is the origin of the English name of the shrubs.
The fruit is a pink-red four- or five-valved pod-like berry, which splits open to reveal the fleshy-coated orange seeds. The seeds are eaten by frugivorous birds, which digest the fleshy seed coat and disperse the seeds in their droppings. All parts of the plants are poisonous to humans if eaten.

Today was beyond nice. i cleaned a lot:D(me love cleaning eheh), cleaned the stove, my bathroom, washed clothes, and tomorrow i'm going to vacum my room and wash some more things. I made a delicious lunch, eggs with tomatoes and onions, i read a lot, i edited all the pictures from the 17th until now, i dressed up, i danced around my room, i laughed my head off, i smiled, i did lots of fun stuff. I'm easily pleased and entertained so i'm never bored and i find things to keep myself busy or entertain myself. The simplest things make me happy. I worked for almost 4hrs tonight, and it was fun working with brooke. i've never closed with her before and it was beyond fun. She's so cute and she looks like taylor swift..in my opinion. just wish she didn't cover her beauty with all that makeup but hey whatever floats her boat. I found out that she wants to be a special needs teacher, like me:D:D her and i got so excited about that. At work i was dancing around and shaking my booty, i didn't care who was watching i refused to be bored at work, since it was sooo slow tonight. More and more that i'm thinking about it the more and more i want it to happen. Me not making more than 50k a year. It's not that i want to be poor, but there is something i just love about struggling. haha ok that may sound funny..let me explain*looks around to see whose she's talking to* I like using coupons for food, i like scrapping together money to buy things, i love shopping at thrift stores, for clothes,i love looking through trash cans to see if anyone threw away still good things, i love garage sales, i love target,i love deals, i love love having to work with what i have, i love mending my own things, i love reading, writing letters, and making home made things, gifts, and etc. I love going to sales. I love it all. I can't explain it. I guess because i grew up with it, and it was so fun and i always felt so at home in low class, poor areas. I feel off and not myself in rich areas, or around things that are really richy. I have nothing against rich people or people that buy really rich things, but i feel so homey, and comfortable in poor, low class houses, or areas, middle class as well. I LOVE handme downs, i love re gifts from familys, that have been passed down. I love things that are old and have been in the family forever. I love using "ghetto" things. I'm not saying i don't like buying things when i need to, but i like shopping at the doller store, and not buying really expensive things and clothes. Haha never mind i can't explain myself. I just never want to be rich..not that i'm scared i will loose this side of me, but i just feel better when i'm not rich. If i ever am rich i'll just keep doing what i do now, and save the money i have for things like trips to travel the world or what not. Plus i think having very expensive material possesions won't make you happy. There is one thing i want a lot of when i get older FOOOOOODDDD! haha indeed i will be cooking EVERYTHING home made when i move out, you can be sure of that, even if i don't have a lot of money i will scrape things together..i always do. haha but yeah today was so great and just what i need. don't work until wednesday night. oh and about the barcode..i love them..and also it's just a silly thing for jonel..of course he doesn't own me but it's like me saying "i'm faithfully yours and no matter what happens i will always stay by your side you can count on me to be yours." he calls himself the halima expert or as i say"limaoligist" ahha i can't wait until he calls me from ait so i can tell him about that. today and last night i felt great i didn't cry or anything, i'm so positive actually seeing jonel has made me even better than i was before i saw him. the first two days were horrible but now i'm stronger than ever. love it. I'm sorry it's been so long since i've uploaded i'm back now. and if you guys read all this haha i love you.

Lower Broadway, Aug 2008 - 04
This was taken from the north side of Broadway at Howard Street, looking south; I thought the young woman made an interesting silhouette as she sat by herself.
I had to look, back and forth, several times at this picture and the previous one, to convince myself that it really is the same young woman. The couple previously sitting to her left has disappeared, and the lower background immediately behind her doesn't really look quite the same. But the other details -- shirt, haircut, purse, etc. -- are the same. And besides, I was there.
In any case, I think this is the more interesting of the two pictures.
Notwithstanding my own opinions on the topic, this photo was published in an April 8, 2009 blog titled "Woody Allen vs. American Apparel.." It was also published in a March 3, 2011 blog titled "Check out the upcoming Gender, Sexuality, and Urban Spaces Conference Mar. 11-13!"
Moving into 2012, the photo was published in an Oct 24, 2012 blog titled "American Apparel opens biggest international store in Beijing." It was also published in an undated (late Oct 2012) blog titled "17 Interesting Pictures of Billboards."
Moving into 2014, the photo was published in a May 18, 2014 blog titled "Women in Three Dimensions."
Moving into 2015, the photo was published in a Feb 23, 2015 blog titled "THE PROBLEM WITH SEXUAL INEQUALITY AT EVERY LEVEL."

On a bright, sunny Wednesday afternoon, I ventured down to 23rd Street and 6th Avenue to drop off my laptop computer for a repair job. Afterwards, I thought I would walk over to Broadway and stroll up the street to see if I could find some interesting pictures; and then I got the crazy idea to take a cab down to the very end of Broadway -- near the Staten Island Ferry -- and walk all the way up Broadway to my neighborhood on 96th Street.
But then I decided that Broadway probably wouldn't be very interesting until I reached Canal Street ... so I had the cab-driver drop me off there, and began my walk northward. Who knows how far I would have gotten if I hadn't been distracted by a lively farmer's market in Union Square -- on 14th Street? Anyway, there's much more of Broadway to cover, and if I have the time and energy over the next few months, perhaps I will cover the entire length of this longest street in New York City, which extends all the way through Manhattan, Bronx, and into Yonkers...

This is a good example to show how cold it was in the mornings...
We got up early to rent snowshoes for some back country hiking. There were only 10 pairs available in total, so we had to get there early enough to grab some...
On the way to the trailhead, we saw a tree out in a snowfield glowing bright white. We slowed down and eventually parked the car. It was a tree covered in ice crystals. It looked absolutely beautiful. I had to get close to take pictures, but on the first step trying to reach it, my foot sunk deep into the snow.
That's where the snowshoes came inn... I have never tried it before, so I was awkwardly strapping those things on to my feet and started wading into the snow. I still sunk in a little bit, but it was much more comfortable.
The tree was amazing. It was radiating light from the early morning sun. I took a couple of pictures from different angles. This one I liked the best, because you can see the snow field sparkling in the background. I really like how the background is out of focus and it almost looks like snowflakes are falling.
All the crystals were gone when we drove past the tree again later in the day. I think they only lasted for a brief moment before the sun melted them away.

Sometimes some shots you don't think are all that great just take on a life you never expected. This was one. I was processing it as I posted the first shot from the Ottawa River shoot. Forgot it was processing (got lost looking at y'all's streams!) and just as I was about to shut down for the night realized it was waiting to be tonemapped.
So I said, "oops" and proceeded to tonemap it.
That's when I went, "Oh wow!"
Hope you like it.
This one MUST be seen in Large On Black. Particularly the mid-ground looks so cool and soft-focused because of the HDR processing.
