Son et lumière (French, lit. "sound and light"), or a sound and light show is a form of nighttime entertainment that is usually presented in an outdoor venue of historic significance. Special lighting effects are projected onto the façade of a building or ruin and synchronized with recorded or live narration and music to dramatize the history of the place. The invention of the concept is credited to Paul Robert-Houdin, who was the curator of the Château de Chambord in France, which hosted the world's first son et lumière in 1952. Another was established in the early 1960s at the site of the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt.
This night time medium naturally lends itself to ecclesiastical buildings, stately homes and ruins, and has rapidly become very popular in France where about 50 annual productions take place, principally in the Loire Valley, at the Palace of Versailles and at Les Invalides in Paris.
Essentially the format involves no active participation by actors but a recorded narrative of the history of the building concerned by one or a cast of voices. To this is added music or sound effects as appropriate, all of which is synchronised to lighting effects which provide the visual dimension. Pyrotechnic effects are occasionally included to give added spectacle.
A relatively recent variation is that, rather than the music and narration coming through a concert-like sound system, they may use headsets, such as in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's "Lights of Liberty". This allows an audience to move through a historic district as the show proceeds.

The first inhabitants in the region were Iberians; Girona is the ancient Gerunda, a city of the Ausetani. Later, the Romans built a citadel there, which was given the name of Gerunda. The Visigoths ruled in Girona until it was conquered by the Moors. Finally, Charlemagne reconquered it in 785 and made it one of the fourteen original countships of Catalonia. Thus it was wrested temporarily from the Moors, who were driven out finally in 1015. Guifré I incorporated Girona to the countship of Barcelona in 878. Alfonso I of Aragón declared Girona to be a city in the 11th century. The ancient countship later became a duchy (1351) when king Pere III d' Aragó gave the title of Duke to his first-born son, Joan. In 1414, King Ferran I in turn gave the title of Prince of Girona to his first-born son, Alfons. The title is currently carried by Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias, the first Borbón to do so.The 12th century saw a flourishing of the Jewish community of Girona, with one of the most important Kabbalistic schools in Europe. The Rabbi of Girona, Moshe ben Nahman Gerondi (better known as Nahmanides or the Ramban) was appointed Great Rabbi of Catalonia. The history of the Jewish community of Girona ended in 1492, when the Catholic Kings expelled all the Jews from Spain. Today, the Jewish ghetto or Call is one of the best preserved in Europe and is a major tourist attraction. On the north side of the old city is the Montjuïc (or hill of the Jews in medieval Catalan), where an important religious cemetery was located.
Girona has undergone twenty-five sieges and been captured seven times. It was besieged by the French royal armies under Marshal Hocquisicourt in 1653, under Marshal Bellefonds in 1684, and twice in 1694 under de Noailles. In May, 1809, it was besieged by 35,000 French Napoleonic troops under Vergier, Augereau and St. Cyr, and held out obstinately under the leadership of Alvarez until disease and famine compelled it to capitulate, 12 December. Finally, the French conquered the city in 1809, after 7 months of siege. The defensive city walls were demolished at the end of the 19th century to allow for the expansion of the city. In recent years, the missing parts of the city walls on the eastern side of the city have been reconstructed. Called the Passeig de la Muralla it now forms a tourist route around the old city.

Species:hyperantus(Linnaeus, 1758)
Introduction
This is a relatively-common butterfly that is unmistakable when seen at rest - the rings on the hindwings giving this butterfly its common name. The uppersides are a uniform chocolate brown that distinguish this butterfly from the closely-related Meadow Brown. Despite this uniformity, a newly-emerged adult is a surprisingly beautiful insect, the velvety wings providing a striking contrast with the delicate white fringes found on the wing edges. The dark colouring also allows this butterfly to quickly warm up - this butterfly being one of the few that flies on overcast days.
Variation in this butterfly is primarily focused on the rings on the hindwings, the lanceolata aberration being particularly striking, where the rings are elongated to form teardrops. Other aberrations occur where the rings are greatly reduced or completely absent. Huggins (1959) also describes a form in Kerry, Ireland, that is of normal size until 600 feet, when it starts to be replaced by a dwarf form that, at 1,000 feet, takes over completely.
This butterfly can be found throughout most of the British Isles, south of a line between the South Ebudes in the west and Banffshire in the east. It is also absent from the western parts of northern England, north-west of the Midlands, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. This butterfly forms discrete colonies where numbers vary from a few dozen to several thousand.
Aphantopus hyperantus
This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1758)
Conservation Status
This is one of the few species that is doing well, with evidence of increases in both distribution and population. It is not, therefore, a priority species for conservation efforts.
Habitat
A variety of habitats is used, although sites characterised as being sheltered and damp are preferred, such as woodland clearings, woodland edges and rides, meadows, hedgerows, road verges and country lanes, where the full heat from the summer sun can be avoided and where the foodplant is lush. The butterfly is not typically found in open areas, such as grassland or heathland.
Life Cycle
There is one generation each year, with adults emerging in the second half of June, peaking in mid-July, with a few individuals continuing into August. The flight period is relatively-short when compared with its close relatives.
Imago
Male and female are almost identical in appearance, although it is just possible to make out the feintest of sex brands on the forewings of the male, which contains special scent scales used in courtship. Males adopt an exclusive strategy of patrolling for mates and are often seen in ones and twos fluttering among the grasses that typify their habitat.
A mated female lays her eggs in a somewhat-chaotic fashion, typically perched on a grass stem and ejecting a single egg at random, often into the air, causing it to land in the vegetation. Both sexes take nectar from a variety of sources, Bramble and Thistle being particular favourites.
Adults feed primarily on Bramble (Rubus fruticosus), Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica), Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum), Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria), Marjoram (Origanum vulgare), Privet (Ligustrum vulgare), Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) and Thistles (Cirsium spp. and Carduus spp.).
Ovum
Eggs are a pale yellow when first laid, but soon turn a pale brown. The stage lasts between 2 and 3 weeks.
Larva
The larva is nocturnal and hides by day at the base of a grass tussock, emerging at night to feed on the tenderest parts of the foodplant. The larva hibernates while in the 3rd instar, but will feed on particularly warm evenings during the winter. Regular feeding resumes in the spring when the larvae can be found by torchlight feeding on grass stems, although they will fall to the ground with the slightest disturbance. There are 4 moults in total.
The primary larval foodplants are Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), Common Couch (Elytrigia repens), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum), Meadow-grasses (various) (Poa spp.) and Tufted Hair-grass (Deschampsia cespitosa).
Pupa
The pupa is formed in a flimsy cocoon, comprising just a few strands of silk, at the base of a grass tussock. This stage lasts around 2 weeks.

One of the rollerbladers last night in the Grand Palais, doing a grind on a metallic railing . No special effects here, this is straight out of the camera :-)
If you look closely (easier with large size), you can see the 2 dark silhouettes of the skater still jumping onto the rail a moment before, and sliding a moment after. I'm not sure what caused this, might be a combination of my own flash and someone's else on the other side I think ?

If you wish, listen to the song: Don't Worry, Be Happy, one of my favorites:
The Cathedral-Basilica of Cefalù, (Italian: Duomo di Cefalù) is a Roman Catholic church in Cefalù, Sicily, southern Italy.
The cathedral, dating from 1131, was commenced in the Norman style, the island of Sicily having been conquered by the Normans in 1091. According to tradition, the building was erected after a vow made to the Holy Saviour by the King of Sicily, Roger II, after he escaped from a storm to land on the city's beach. The fortress-like character of the building, which, seen from a distance, rises as a huge bulk above its medieval town, may in part reflect the vulnerability of the site to attack from the sea. It also made a powerful statement of the Norman presence.
Numerous changes were made over succeeding centuries and the edifice was never entirely completed.
The flat hill in the distance is a marvelous formation that can be recognised from miles away. Just to the south of it is located the historic 77 ranch first owned by Peck and Converse. Mike Shonsey of the Johnson County Range War was employed by the 77 ranch. www.wheeler-roots.org/histories/history-shonsey.php
In his book,The long trail from Texas, Ad Spaugh talks of burying a couple children who live with thier mother in a cabin east of Flat Top that took sick and died. They were buried on a pine knoll nearby Flat Top by a crew of sad cowboys.
My Grandmother who knew Ad and sadly recalled visiting with him about the burial. She told me of it before I had ever read the book many years later. Exciting and hard times...

Times Square is a major commercial intersection in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The extended Times Square area, also called the Theatre District, consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.
Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after the New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Years Eve. Times Square, nicknamed "The Crossroads of the World" and "The Great White Way," has achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and is a symbol of New York City and the United States.

NOTE: Ranked #176 in interestingness (on 2007-10-11). Thanx to everyone for their support!!
NOTE 2: I know that I seem like an HDR freak (which I AM), but this is NOT HDR btw...!! It's mere playing around with RAW format
While cruising doing some mashaweer, I stopped by to take this long shot (30 seconds exposure).
I hanged my Gorillapod SLR on the metal fence and did my thing. Using this toy turns anything (repeat: anything) as a tripod!! A true life saver.
Seconds later, I was surrounded with some low ranked policemen (3asaker). But I was smart. Before going there and while I was parking the car a few meters away, there was a soll (a higher ranked policeman) that I asked for his permission because of the sensitivity of the location (it's near our presidents home in Heliopolis and I knew they would notice me) and he said "etfadal ya basha" (I am starting to love this sentence)
I merged 2x30 secs exposured RAW images to give more light on the right hand side (the traffic was moving much slower compared to the left side) then took it to my good old Lightroom to treat the colors in an appealing way.
Hope you like it.

sin que la vida pase a través de mí...
Y aunque me pierda completamente, no voy a ser yo
quien se esconda de lo que siente, no voy a ser yo
No voy a pisar el freno, no voy a ser yo

AHH. It's winter. I did not expect it to come this quickly! It's been so cold, so I'm hiding in scarves, and Skyrim. It's crazy, I went outside to take a picture, and had to run inside and get a scarf and warmer jacket.
This happened.
My hair is also a really light blue, now, I loove it! I might try to put a baby-blue dye over it, though. :3
Also, the texture I put over it was a picture of sparkling snow, that I took when it snowed for two weeks last winter~ <3
Also, Kaskade's album "Fire & Ice" is amazing. So, listen to this.

Please take my heart... Love that band and that song so much, the lyrics are beautiful, heard it again this morning on the TV, don't know why but it speaks a lot to me.
So I decided to get back on the idea of choosing a music first, and then realize some picture using the inspiration I found. I think it's the most difficult but exciting way to play with lyrics.
So that's what happened today, I decided to use this song and that's the idea I found for today's shot.
This is the Saint Catherine street, just the longest pedestrian street of Europe in the deep center of Bordeaux.
There's always so much people and shops over there, it's amazing.
Spent a great afternoon with my friend Julien, thanks to him for the picture !
One thing you don't know is how much this picture and the concept illustrate perfectly Julien's yesterday !
It's really too funny, the composition and the picture is relatively simple but I'm really proud of this one.

We attended a landscape photo workshop yesterday (Sunday). Not too close - 4hr drive to location in South Moravia, Czech Rep. so we had to wake up at 4am and got back home too tired around 11pm. But it was so worth it. Location was stunning and well known by the pro photographer who was leading the workshop. And he even managed to secure ideal weather somehow LOL. Area was full of rolling hills that are used for agriculture so the fields were vibrant and varied. Sky was nice and blue almost all day with those puffy white clouds moving very fast in the strong wind and that resulted in an amazing light&shadow show on the fields.
At one moment I spotted a triangle illuminated in the sea of shadows so I immediately turned the ball head on my tripod, prefocused manually, adjusted polarizer & 1-stop hard edge grad filter, set the exposure and fired. Post process included only the adjustment of the levels to achieve better contrast, tiny bit of saturation and square crop.
Didn't have time to play with all the photos yet but this one is my personal winner - at least I think so ;) Anyways... expect more photos soon.
Thanks for looking!

Today is Daffodil Day. We were all up early this morning in the Murphy house. Just as well, as the sunrise was beautiful. It didn't last long though and the clouds soon turned to rain by school time. I used the diffused light from the cloudy day here. My model was not her usual, obliging self, and took some coaxing. I thought the subject appropriate seeing the time of year and worthy cause. I wanted to try and capture the 'Scent of Spring' - as if a photo could do that! Here the radiance exuded by the daffodil is being absorbed by the little girl. A simple idea. I used colour popping to enhance the effect. I was equally happy with the full colour shot and I combined it with a High Key black and white conversion.
The shot; A single Raw file taken on the tri-pod. Processed with a tone Curve and Saturation boost. From this I made the b/w copy and added it as the top layer to the colour shot. Then erased elements of the b/w layer to reveal the colour elements in the Background colour layer. After flattening, I added some blur to the edges and framed it. ISO 100. 1/60 at f/2.8. No flash used, just the natural unfiltered light from the window. See the set-up below. I never go anywhere without my sheet of Black Felt, truly excellent stuff.
Certainly felt that way, standing at the top of the Prudential tower :) I can't help but notice the letter N formed by the light trails at the bustling streets of downtown Boston. Well there is an entire plane trail for you to id Logan easily! Anyone enthusiastic about night photography may find the following documentary interesting.
