The Trabant is an automobile that was produced by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in Zwickau, Sachsen. It was the most common vehicle in East Germany, and was also exported to countries both inside and outside the communist bloc. The main selling point was that it had room for four adults and luggage in a compact, light and durable shell. With its mediocre performance, smoky two-stroke engine, and production shortages, the Trabant is often cited as an example of the disadvantages of centralized planning; on the other hand, it is regarded with derisive affection as a symbol of the failed former East Germany and of the fall of communism (in former West Germany, as many East Germans streamed into West Berlin and West Germany in their Trabants after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989). It was in production without any significant changes for nearly 30 years with 3,096,099 Trabants produced in total.

Van de veertiende tot de zeventiende eeuw werd in dit deel van Brabant de hele laag hoogveen afgegraven tot de zandondergrond. Er ontwikkelde zich moerasheide waar weinigen een bestaansgrond vonden. Vanaf 1800 werden de onafzienbare heidevelden geleidelijk ontgonnen tot cultuurland en bos. Van 1900 tot 1940 verhevigde de ontginningsintensiteit. In het kader van de werkverschaffing werden de vennen en overige lage delen opgehoogd met zand van hoge koppen als de Lokkerberg.
Door het verbreden en verdiepen van het beekje de Bijloop werd het gebied ontwaterd. Op de drooggevallen venbodem van De Lokker ontwikkelde zich natte heide, rietland, gagelstruweel en moerasbos van wilgen, elzen en berken. Door het plaatsen van stuwen in de Bijloop steeg het waterpeil van deze beek aanzienlijk. De kalk- en ijzerrijke kwel van de hogere gronden werd niet langer door de beek 'weggevangen'. Het verzuurde moeras van De Lokker werd er weer mee gevoed, wat zorgde voor een herstel van de amfibienstand en een uitbreiding van planten als wateraardbei, moeraswederik en moerasviooltje. Sinds enkele jaren vliegen er weer weide- en bosbeekjuffers boven de Bijloop. Zomertaling, blauwborst, waterral en roodborsttapuit broeden er.
Toen Brabants landschap het landgoed in 1970 kon verwerven, was nog maar circa 100 hectare woeste grond over. Door geleidelijk aan landbouwgronden uit de pacht te nemen, konden wij vanaf 1995 verscheidene verdwenen vennen opnieuw uitgraven. De afgelopen 12 jaar zijn maar liefst 11 vennen uit de dood herrezen. Vele zeldzame planten keerden weer terug uit de ondergrondse zaadbank: blauwe knoop, teer guichelheil, moerashertshooi, heidekartelblad en pilvaren zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden.
Om de bijzondere plantengroei blijvend te behouden wordt er kleinschalig geplagd en begrazen Schotse hooglanders en laaglanders (Galloways) en IJslandse pony's het gebied het jaar rond. Boven de hernieuwde vennen vliegen veel libellen, waaronder bloedrode en bruinrode heidelibel. Typische heidebewoners als levendbarende hagedis, heideblauwtje en bont dikkopje kunnen weer migreren en hun populaties voorzien van 'vers bloed'.
Het hoge, droge deel van de Pannenhoef bestaat grotendeels uit bos dat qua soortensamenstelling en leeftijdsopbouw gevarieerd is en veel dood hout kent. Dat vertaalt zich in een hoge broeddichtheid van zangvogels en spechten.
Het open weidegebied het Rondgors moet een verbindingsschakel worden tussen de Pannenhoef en de Vloeiweide. Bij piekafvoeren krijgt het tevens een waterbergingsfunctie. De voormalige gemeentebossen van Etten-Leur vormen een belangrijke droge verbindingsschakel tussen beide landgoederen.

Lo Sri Lanka è la casa a di un decimo dei 40.000 elefanti Asiatici selvaggi, elefanti che in Sri Lanka non vengono uccisi per le loro zanne; non sono uccisi per la carne, poichè nessuno mangia la carne di elefante; non sono uccisi per la pelle, poichè non vi è mercato per non esiste industria della pelle di elefante.
Sono semplicemente uccisi perchè interferiscono con l'agricoltura. Dal 1950, è probabile che più di 4.000 elefanti siano stati abbattuti nel conflitto tra l'uomo e l'elefante.
L'elefante è senza spazio in Sri Lanka. La maggior parte delle aree protette abitate dagli elefanti sono piccole, meno di 1.000 kmq, mentre gli elefanti, possono spostarsi per centinaia di chilometri nel corso di una stagione. Il loro appetito è enorme e gli elefanti e le persone non possono vivere insieme dove l'agricoltura è la forma dominante di utilizzo del suolo, a meno che il danno che causano ai contadini possa essere ricompensato.

Non ci sono facili soluzioni per risolvere il conflitto! Molto dipenderà da come i contadini percepiranno il valore dell'elefante per fermarne l'uccisione ingiustificata. Molti si stanno convincendo che l'unico modo per convivere pacificamente passi attraverso l'utilizzo dell'elefante come una risorsa sostenibile economica. Lo sterco di elefante è un prodotto finito ed è anche una merce che è liberamente disponibile a in qualunque momento (mediamente ogni elefante adulto ne produce 180-200 kg al giorno) e, fino ad ora, nessuno aveva trovato alcun utilizzo.
Il progetto di Maximus per fabbricare la carta dallo sterco di elefante può aiutare la percezione dei contadini sul valore economico dell'elefante nelle aree di conflitto. Il progetto, cominciato nel 1997, ha prodotto con successo e lanciato sul mercato ciò che è conosciuto come "carta di pachiderma".
In questo modo "la cacca di elefante" prende la forma di quaderni, fogli di carta, scatole, borse ecc. La sola limitazione è l'immaginazione!

Questi prodotti sono divenuti estremamente popolari fra la popolazione locale ed i turisti stranieri. Anche se lo sterco di elefante non può risolvere il crescente conflitto uomo-elefante, il suo uso a beneficio dei contadini che soffrono andrà certamente ad innalzare il livello di tolleranza di questi ultimi. Se l'elefante sarà visto come un valore economico per contribuire significativamente al benessere delle persone, le stesse non ameranno vederlo scomparire dalla loro area. In conclusione, tutti gli sforzi sarebbero futili senza il sostegno delle comunità locali.

...El cuatrimestre seguía, y cada clase que pasaba quedaba más fascinado con los profesores: a cada clase le ponían energía, originalidad, buena onda... tanto que ya uno esperaba el martes para ir a pasarla bien y ya uno (o por lo menos yo), a pesar de no tener ninguna obligación real de hacer los trabajos que se le iban pidiendo (ya que el control sobre los mismos casi no existía) se sentía como en obligación personal de hacerlos... Ya no era cuestión de entregar un trabajo; era cuestión de mostrarles a personas que estimabas mucho lo que habías logrado...
Tan así que, cuando un día (3 días antes de la entrega del primer cuatrimestre) dejé (de colgado cual soy) la carpeta en el 42, estaba más desesperado por la decepción que ese evento pudiese causar en los profesores que la nota que me iba a sacar por traer muy poco (o sea lo que de ahí a tres días lograse rehacer).
Esta foto pertenece a uno de los últimos trabajos que hicimos durante el primer cuatrimestre.

Bis Mitte der 1990er Jahre verlief beinahe der gesamte Anstieg auf den Lusen (bis kurz vor das Blockmeer) im schattigen Misch- bzw. Nadelwald. Ab 1995 fielen aufgrund der ungewöhnlich warmen Witterung jedoch weite Teile des alten Bergfichtenwaldes dem Borkenkäfer zum Opfer. Im Lusengebiet und nördlich davon traten auf rund 4000 Hektar die Schäden fast geschlossen auf. Dem Grundsatz des Nationalparkgedankens folgend wurden keine chemischen oder biologischen Abwehrmaßnahmen ergriffen. Dem Betrachter bietet sich vom Lusengipfel aus daher ein Bild, in dem immer noch die abgestorbenen Nadelbäume dominieren. Für viele Besucher des Nationalparks wirkt dieses Bild des augenscheinlich "toten Waldes" befremdlich. Die Nationalparkverwaltung hat sich jedoch dafür entschieden, kein Totholz aus dem betroffenen Gebiet zu entfernen. Sie vertritt die Philosophie "Natur Natur sein lassen". Es sterbe nicht der Wald, sondern nur seine alten Individuen. Im Schutze der toten Bäume wächst bereits ein neuer Wald zu einem europaweit einzigartigen “wilden Wald” nach. Der neue natürliche und baumartenreiche Wald dürfte den üblichen monotonen Nutzholzforsten ökologisch weit überlegen sein. Der Erlebnisweg "Hochwaldsteig" am Sommerweg gibt Einblicke in diese natürliche Waldentwicklung.
So obviously I wasn't running when I took this photo. I am not a super duper runner man. I can get down the trail. I suppose I lumber more than anything else, but I stay moving and I am faster than 95% of the population and slower than 95% of the trail runners.
Not that I really ever see one out there on the trails, which is one of the things I enjoy about it.
Anyway I run with my camera. I don't see too many other folks out there running with an SLR.
Sometimes I carry it in my hand, with the strap wrapped around my wrist. Other times I carry my camera in my little pack on my back. Sometimes (like this morning) I don't get it out at all, there just wasn't anything "that special". I could have pulled it out and done some shots for video, but we'll I just ran.
Anyway (for at least the second time) I saw this mushroom and had to kneel down for a minute to take its photo. Pretty sure if you ate it you'd die. Though I wasn't afraid of this one like I was The Black Mushroom of Death.
Then I got up and started running again. I planned on going on a long run, but I took a wrong turn and it ended up a 1/2 mile longer than I wanted. 10 miles when I got home, in the dark. My feet hurt the next day.

Santa Maria Maggiore – Via Cerretani.
Questa storia ha inizio il 16 di Settembre del 1327, tutto il popolo fiorentino si è riversato per le strade, un condannato a morte viene trasportato verso il rogo:Mentre il carro sta passando di fronte alla Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, il condannato chiede di avere un po’ d’acqua; dalla finestra del campanile una donna chiamata Berta, avendo udito la richiesta fatta da Cecco d’Ascoli, gridando dal quel pertugio ammonisce chiunque di versare da bere “all’alchimista”: perché come si credeva al tempo, i maghi potevano utilizzare qualsiasi elemento per acquisire potere dal demonio e Cecco avrebbe avuto così l'occasione di sfuggire al rogo imminente.
Una delle tante storie su questo avvenimento riporta le parole gridate dalla donna:
“Se beve, non brucerà più!!”.
Cecco d’Ascoli, infuriato per la cattiveria dimostrata dalla Berta, avrebbe risposto alla donna rivolgendole un sortilegio:
“E tu, non leverai più la testa di lì!!”.
La “Testa pietrificata” in effetti si trova ancora lì, affacciata da una fenditura della torre campanaria di Santa Maria Maggiore (Chiesa della “Prima cerchia antica” e quindi uno dei primi edifici religiosi di Firenze, dove riposano le spoglie del maestro di Dante, Brunetto Latini), che aspetta di essere liberata dal terribile incantesimo.

'#2802 American Bison' On Black
Bison have a shaggy, dark brown winter coat, and a lighter weight, lighter brown summer coat. Bison can reach up to 2 metres (6½ ft) tall, 3 metres (10 ft) long and weigh 450 to 900 kilograms (900 to 2,000 lb). The biggest specimens on record have weighed as much as 1140 kg (2,500 lb). The heads and forequarters are massive, and both sexes have short, curved horns, which they use in fighting for status within the herd and for defence. Bison mate in August and September; a single reddish-brown calf is born the following spring, and it nurses for a year. Bison are mature at three years of age, and have a life expectancy of 18 to 22 years in the wild and 35 to 40 years in captivity. Bison can jump up to 6 feet high and run up to 40 mph, a fact that comes as a surprise to those familiar with docile domesticated cattle.
One very rare condition results in the white buffalo, where the calf turns entirely white. It is not to be confused with albino, since white bison still possess pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes. White bison are considered sacred by many Native Americans.
Due to its size and the protection afforded by living in a herd, the bison have few enemies besides humans. Grizzly bears and wolves may attempt to attack young calves or subadults, but only in the dead of winter when the herd cannot expend the energy to protect stragglers. A wolf pack can also take down an adult bison, wolves frequently test even the largest bison for weaknesses, usually several wolves may pursue a bison and attempt to bring it down after the bison has succumbed to exhaustion or wounds from the wolves' deadly jaws. The only other threat, other than hunting by humans, that leads to the depletion of wild bison is interbreeding with domestic bovines. In fact, only a small number of bison herds found in North America today are pure breed bison.

Entré a la U y solo maravillas puedo decir hasta ahora. Luego las cosas se van a poner aaarto más peludas, pero ahora es cuando hay que ponerle ganas.
Viviendo solo, disfrutando de una total independencia.
Y ahora, al fín, con poco tiempo para pensar, pero bien aprovechado y bien analizado, las cosas van pasando.
Importantes, claro, pero no sé si sea provechozo darle tanta vuelta.

Just to upload something and have an excuse for writing.
I started on college, only nice things I can tell for now. Then, things will become really dificult, but now is when I have to go on hard.
Living alone, enjoying full independence.
And now, finally, with quite little time to think, but well used and well analyzed, things are going through.
Important things, surely, but I don't know if it's helpful to re-think it all.

I dig my toes into the sand.

I lean against the wind, pretend that I am weightless...

C. jamaicense is common throughout the tropical Americas, one typical and well-known area of extensive saw-grass growth is the Florida Everglades; saw-grass is the plant referred to by the descriptor, "River of Grass". Across the Everglades, C. jamaicense occurs in patches of dense growth surrounded by areas of very sparse growth. Because of the sharp, saw-like serrulations on the blades, dense beds of saw-grass can be dangerous to attempt to navigate through (the blades easily cut flesh). Consequently, the dense saw-grass beds harbor little animal life, but (in the Everglades) are the habitat used by alligators to build nests (Lodge, 1994). It is also considered to be indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands, where it dominates a considerable portion of the largest marsh in Hawai‘i, Kawai Nui Marsh.
Sawgrass may be useful as a source for developing biofuel (ethanol), possibly replacing corn as the cellulose (the basis for developing ethanol) source of choice. Studies on switchgrass, a prarie plant which should not be mistaken for sawgrass, demonstrate that, since it is such a laborless crop to grow, it yields 540% of the energy used to harvest, and process it into ethanol. It is also carbon neutral, absorbing about the same amount of greenhouse gases while it's growing as it emits when burned as fuel

(Morocco, village in the mountains one hour from Larache, Nov. 07)… In my favourite café in the Rif mountains, time passes slowly even the days of the weekly market. Only men present, some spending long hours, smoking kif and/or playing to win a glass of mint tea (or more). They accepted my presence, a foreign woman and most did not mind being taken in photos ; only coming back did I realise that some were hiding behind the hood of their djellabas ; nobody objected though and I was feeling most welcome !
Later, I was invited by one of the young guys for "a simple meal" : I thought that it would be an affair of 1 or 2 hours but this took the whole afternoon as all the relatives living nearby and a bit farther had to get there and greet me in the large house before I was allowed to leave, ! covered with some beautiful jewellery that I could not refuse despite my protests (so embarrassing !)

This village café was a source of wonders for me, not only for the friendly people who were sitting there but also for the inside architecture : it used to be a government office during the Spanish rule, I was told. Basically, this largish café is divided in 2 with an entrance in the middle, dividing again the room in 4 sections, but there are many such communicating openings in the walls ; here you see the section on the left.
