Investigators from Scotland Yard arrived in Islamabad on Jan. 4 to help the Pakinasti authorities on the investigation of the death of Benazir Bhutto. Rumours have surrounded the exact causes of her death, as a man shot her while she was standing in her car, waving through the sunroof, then a suicide bomber exploded himself. The oficial version concluded she banged her head against the sunroof due to the shock of the explosion, but other witnesses (including the person who washed her body) said she had been shot. Her party, the PPP, has called for a UN investigation but so far, president Musharraf has rejected this request and asked instead for the help of the UK.
On Jan.5, the Scotland Yard team together with the Pakistani officials went to Liaqat Bagh, the park in Rawalpindi in front of which the bombing occured, to be briefed on the events. The scene itself, however, has nothing to reveal in terms of material evidence as it's a busy street opened to traffic.
Here, English investigators talk to Pakistani officials in front of a Beanzir Bhutto poster, in font of the park entrance, under the surveillance of military personnel on the rooftops..

I photographed this Raccoon (aka: North American Raccoon) in a small pond (alligator hole) at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida. Judging by the abundance of bubbles rising to the surface of the water, there must have been something edible there and this fellow was doing its best to make a meal of it. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a wildlife conservation area run by the Audubon Society, a non-profit organization. More information on the sanctuary and the Audubon Society may be obtained at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary web site.
Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive degenerative disease of the brain that impairs motor control, speech, and other functions.
Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, resting tremor, slowing of movement (bradykinesia) and, in extreme cases, nearly complete loss of movement (akinesia). Secondary symptoms include high level cognitive dysfunction, subtle language problems, and depression. Some people with Parkinson’s disease develop Dementia in the late stages of the disease
In contrast to many other neurological disorders, the nature of the brain degeneration that produces Parkinson's disease has been well understood for decades. The symptoms are caused by loss of nerve cells that secrete dopamine in a tiny midbrain area called the substantia nigra. These nerve cells, for reasons that are not fully understood, are especially vulnerable to damage of various sorts, including drugs, disease, and head trauma. The term Parkinsonism is used for any process that destroys large numbers of these cells and thereby causes the same characteristic symptoms. Parkinson's disease, or more fully, idiopathic Parkinson's disease, is diagnosed when no specific physical cause for the loss of dopamine cells can be identified.
My father, Peter, suffers from dementia brought on by Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body disease and Parkinson’s disease. He is not a well man and at the young age of 72 his ability to perform normal tasks most of us take for granted is diminishing. He often suffers from confusion and memory loss but despite that he is still a loving, gentle and intelligent man with a ‘Dad’s’ sense of humour.
Recently, due to an increasing difficulty he has with shaving, he began growing a beard. I love it. After seeing him clean shaven for most of my life I reckon it really suits him. He is quite proud of it himself – and I think he really enjoyed ‘modelling’ for photos despite the fact smiling isn’t easy for him these days.

Cercis siliquastrum, commonly known as Judas Tree, is a small deciduous tree from Southern Europe and Western Asia which is noted for its prolific display of deep-pink flowers in spring. In Spain is also know as "love tree" beause the pink colour of its flowers and the heart shape of its leafs.
The species is native to Western Asia, including Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey and Southern Europe including Albania, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy and Yugoslavia.
There is a longstanding myth that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a tree of this species. This belief is related to the common name "Judas Tree" which is possibly a corrupted derivation from the French common name, Arbre de Judée meaning tree of Judea, referring to a region where the tree occurs.

CASTELLANO

Fallow deer have been present in Dublin's Phoenix Park since the seventeenth century when they were hunted for sport by the gentry of the day. The present-day herd is descended from those deer who were chased for enjoyment and hunted for food.
They are wild animals, and their relationship with man has sometimes been a stormy one, like when calls were made to remove the animals to a special enclosure so twentieth-century motorists could drive through the park on the way to somewhere else without having deer wandering the roads and precipitating accidents.
In fact, their wanderings during the Second World War and pressure on space in general in Phoenix Park saw most of 1,200 herd members being officially shot dead. Just thirty-eight animals constituted the herd, following the 1942 cull.
There are approximately 400 deer wander through the park today with some 200 fawns being born each year.

2008 Year of the frog
Amphibians are declining rapidly; species, genera, and even families are going extinct at an unprecedented rate. One third to one half of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction, with probably more than 120 already gone in recent years. Habitat loss is the major threat in terms of number of species affected, but the rapid dispersal of amphibian chytrid fungus is of major and urgent concern because of its tendency to drive species to extinction quickly. Scientists believe many more species may go extinct before we are able to act. But there is one option currently available which can save hundreds or even thousands of species if we act rapidly: captive survival assurance populations. Zoos, aquaria, and botanical gardens play a crucial role in this solution, as they can provide ex-situ breeding grounds for the immediate conservation action needed before hundreds of species disappear.

Aloe, also written Aloë, is a genus containing about four hundred species of flowering succulent plants. The most common and well known of these is Aloe vera, or "true aloe".
The genus is native to Africa, and is common in South Africa's Cape Province, the mountains of tropical Africa, and neighboring areas such as Madagascar, the Arabian peninsula, and the islands of Africa.
The APG II system (2003) placed the genus in the family Asphodelaceae. In the past it has also been assigned to families Aloaceae and Liliaceae or lilly family. Members of the closely allied genera Gasteria, Haworthia and Kniphofia, which have a similar mode of growth, are also popularly known as aloes. Note that the plant sometimes called American aloe (Agave americana) belongs to Agavaceae, a different family.
Most Aloe species have a rosette of large, thick, fleshy leaves. The leaves are often lance-shaped with a sharp apex and a spiny margin. Aloe flowers are tubular, frequently yellow, pink or red and are borne on densely clustered, simple or branched leafless stems.
Many species of Aloe appear to be stemless, with the rosette growing directly at ground level; other varieties may have a branched or unbranched stem from which the fleshy leaves spring. They vary in colour from grey to bright-green and are sometimes striped or mottled. Some Aloes native to South Africa are arborescent.[1]
Historical use of various Aloe species by humans is well documented. Documentation of the clinical effectiveness is available, although relatively limited.[2]
Of the 300 species of Aloe, only a few were used traditionally as a herbal medicine, aloe vera again being the most commonly used version of aloe in herbal medicine. Also included are Aloe perryi (found in northeastern Africa) and Aloe ferox (found in South Africa). The Greeks and Romans used aloe vera to treat wounds. In the Middle Ages, the yellowish liquid found inside the leaves was favored as a purgative.[citation needed] It should be noted that processed aloe that contains aloin is generally used as a laxative, whereas processed aloe vera juice does not usually contain significant aloin.
Some species, particularly Aloe vera are used in alternative medicine and in the home first aids. Both the translucent inner pulp and the resinous yellow aloin from wounding the Aloe plant are used externally to relieve skin discomforts. As an herbal medicine, aloe vera juice is commonly used internally to relieve digestive discomfort "aloe for heartburn". findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FKA/is_4_69/ai_n18791510. "aloe alt med". altmedicine.about.com/od/therapiesfrometol/a/heartburn.htm. "Aloe IBS study". www.medscape.com/viewarticle/546327. . Some modern research suggests Aloe vera can significantly slow wound healing compared to normal protocols of treatment.[3] Other reviews of randomised and controlled clinical trials have provided no evidence that Aloe vera has a strong medicinal effect.[4][5]
Today, aloe vera is used both internally and externally on humans. The gel found in the leaves is used for soothing minor burns, wounds, and various skin conditions like eczema and ringworm. The extracted aloe vera juice aloe vera plant is used internally to treat a variety of digestive conditions. The use of this herbal medicine was popularized in the 1950s in many Western countries. The gel's effect is nearly immediate; it also applies a layer over wounds that is said to reduce the chance of any infection.[3]
There have been relatively few studies about possible benefits of Aloe gel taken internally. Components of Aloe may inhibit tumor growth.[6] There have been some studies in animal models which indicate that extracts of Aloe have a significant anti-hyperglycemic effect, and may be useful in treating Type II diabetes. These studies have not been confirmed in humans.[7]

I originally had another plan for tonight's photo. This was quite random, shooting at 10pm. It's interesting how creativity can kick in and ideas come to mind when left to your own devices... The title of this photo comes from a very touching song by the band Oceana called The Spine Collection- www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyOei4RkxQQ
The old ways always get at me
Throwing myself on the floor when I'm empty
Call me I'm falling in front of a demon possessing me
Making me talk
My throat gets rid of a part of me
Anxiety could end it all
Physically I've found that I'll stay the same
And you all should have nothing to say
Was afraid of living alone
You could of changed it
They could have saved us
I need something to fill in the hole
I was afraid of living alone
You could of changed it
They could saved us
I need something to fill in the hole
How pathetic my face is allergic
And everything my spine gives
Wanna get rid of it
When there's something saddening
The room writes a scene
I could not exist I want to get rid of it
The patches that hold my blood in
I've invented a new sin
The whole world takes part of it
In learning I'll love him
Right now he does not exist
Till then I'll be over it
It's one thing I'll never miss
And I'll never find a way to be happy
When there's no one here no one here that's like me
No one here that's like me
And I'll never find a way to be happy
When there's no one here no one here that's like me
No one here that's like me
I was afraid of living alone
You could of changed it
They could saved us
I need something to fill in the hole
I was afraid of living alone
You could of changed it
They could saved us
I need something to fill in the hole
I was afraid of living alone

"The High Cross stood for three centuries at the very centre of mediaeval Bristol on the crossroads formed by Corn Street, Wine Street, Broad Street and High Street. Commemorating Edward III's charter of 1373 granting county status to the town, it was brightly painted and decorated with four statues of mediaeval kings.
"In 1733 it was removed at the request of local residents, who found it a 'ruinous and superstitious relick' and public obstruction. For a few years it stood on College Green, but was once more removed when it was found to obstruct ladies and gentlemen walking on the green. It was then taken to the gardens at Stourhead in Wiltshire, where it had remained in safety and splendour without obstructing anyone ever since. A replica of the upper section of the Cross stands in the gardens of Berkeley Square, off Park Street."

Gotta love a shot pretty much straight out of camera, just a little sharpening. Took this on the way to work this morning. The wind was blowing and it was waaaay colder than I liked. My eyes were watering from the wind and I was concerned with getting a decent long exposure despite the wind buffeting around me. I tried to stand in front of the tripod and put the weight of my hand on it, hoping to keep it steady. One thirty second exposure was enough for me, in this cooold wind, after just waking up, crawling out of a warm bed, and HI HO,HI HO 'ing off to work. Usually when I get to the marina,on the way to work, I just sit in my van, eat my oatmeal, listen to morning radio, and scope out the vista, wondering if there's anything outside the windshield worth the "getting out and setting up". Today it seemed worth it. Just one shot though.
TGIF!! Have a GREAT weekend!
I'm in envy of addicts
you're obsessed with stars
dont, dont you sound
so excited you're showing me your vanity
whisper it once, just a little bit
c'mon whisper it twice,
I cant stand to see the spotlight shine one more night
just tie the rope
oh and kick the chair
just leave me hanging there,
gasping for air
yeah don't mind me three feet from the ceiling.
you'd rather watch me drown,
then see your hands get wet
you took the plot from stage to screen and turned it to
an epic scene
so whisper it once, tell me again
c'mon whisper it twice,
i cant stand to see my whole life flash before my eyes.
when i'm with you there's
no point in breathing.
& I think I know
why you never get to close
its cause you're too scared to
When i'm with you there's no point in breathing
so you run away for no apparent reason
cause you and I are changing with the seasons
you give me an answer as to why you're leaving
the tables full but nobodys been dealing
so fold your hand, c'mon and fold your hand
and I think I know
why you never get to close
its cause you're too scared to
when i'm with you there's
no point in breathing.
No point in breathing - the format
there isn't much else that could explain it better.
happy summer everybody

A rare Candon scroll console table
Estimate: PHP 120,000 - 140,000
Last quarter, 19th century
Candon, Ilocos Sur
Red narra
88.5 x 98 x 51 cm (35 x 38 1/2 x 20 in)
Provenance:
Formerly from the heirs of Josefa Abaya of Candon City
In furniture, the Late Classical style popular in Europe in 1835-1850 is known as the Pillar and Scroll style in America. It is characterized by C- and S-curves that were cut into pillars and scrolls as primary visual element. This pair of console tables, offered in separate lots, was influenced by this style as it reached the Philippines decades later. It looks stately and elegant, and one is immediately drawn to the curvaceous scroll supports decorated with turned bosses, and the shapely foliated scroll ornament to the 3-inch thick lower shelf. The corniced double top is attenuated at the bottom and widens to the top, the same archetypal shape found in the Ilocos comoda de poste. The table stands on claw feet at the front. When found in situ, these tables on which the family’s venerated santos were enshrined, sat at either side of the door leading to one of the bedrooms.
Josefa Abaya is a descendant of local hero Isabelo Abaya (1854 - 1900), who despite being from a prominent and rich family founded Espiritu de Candon, the revolutionary faction of the Katipunan in Ilocos Sur. He led the 'Cry of Candon' in 1898 which drove the Spaniards away and declared a free Republic of Candon, less than three months before the declaration of the Philippine Independence in June 1898. He is now recognized as one of the founders of Candon, the tobacco capital of the Philippines.
