A processional ivory and hardwood 'San Vicente de Ferrer' figure

Estimate: PHP 1,000,000 - 1,200,000

Late 18th to early 19th century

Laguna

Ivory head and hands, painted hardwood body and base, polychrome, gesso, glass eyes, silver halo, tin wings

114.5 x 43 x 32 cm (45 x 17 x 12 1/2 in)

Provenance:

Family of Vicente Basallote, Cabuyao, Laguna

This is an exquisite classical depiction of the 15th-century Spanish Dominican friar regarded as the patron saint of builders for his tireless efforts to strengthen the Church. He is one of the most widely revered saints in the Philippines with numerous places and institutions named after him. In Christian art he is instantly recognizable for his iconic preacher stance and attributes. The head and neck are expertly carved from one solid piece of ivory, including the detailed tonsure hair which – in many cases due to economic reasons – is carved on a separate piece of wood before applying it to the ivory head. There is some material loss on the fingers of his right hand (though can easily be restored), while the left hand where the book is sitting on is intact. His robe has deep, straight ‘masculine’ folds, and the drops and swirls of the cloak suggest gentle movements. The umbrella-type silver halo is engraved with archaic ysot designs. The image was a bequest from an old church in Cabuyao, Laguna to Vicente Basallote in acknowledgment of his donation towards the church’s major rehabilitation in the 1960s.

Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.

To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.

Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.

At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.

A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"

* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.

It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.

An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!

Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.

A solid ivory ‘Santo Niño Dormido’ in a French style virina

Estimate: PHP 1,000,000 - 1,200,000

18th century

Paoay, Ilocos

Ivory, 14k rose gold jewelry on the Niño, polychrome, glass & wood virina, brass, velvet, mirror, other materials

Ivory Niño: 18.5 x 6 x 4 cm (7 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 1 1/2 in)

Total dimensions: 53.5 x 36.8 x 23 cm (21 x 14 1/2 x 9 in)

This fine example of a Sleeping Child figure is masterfully carved from a solid piece of highly prized ivory, including the arms. Only a master carver can successfully achieve perfect proportions, anatomical correctness, naif expression, and those delicate spaces between the limbs and the main body. He is richly adorned with an elaborate skull cap, bracelets and loin cover made of 14k rose gold in ‘binandili’ cut with tambourine design. Beautiful age cracks on the material are unfeigned signs of genuine old age. The Niño lays on a soft, red velvet bed in a 19th -century French style wedding glass dome brimming with gold-plated brass metalwork and mirror decorations. Every Christmas Eve, the Niño Dormido of households is taken out of the virina for the traditional “pahalik,” as family members would take turns kissing the Holy Child’s feet, similar to such rites performed in churches.

Another fab weekend in Pembrokeshire, enjoying better weather than London - and making the long awaited visit to the legendary Mrs Weston's Tea Shop!

On Friday, Hazel and I followed our usual routine for the our journey west - taking the mid-afternoon train to Newport where we rendezvoused with Dave for the drive on to Steffi's.

As is traditional, we prepared for Saturday's stroll along the Pembroke Coast Path with a Friday night feast of Steffi-curries - and a snifter of whiskey to see us on our way to Newgale for a night in the 'van. We slept well.

Saturday dawned sunny, and after a leisurely breakfast we set off, Dave at the wheel, destination: the National Trust car park at Stackpole Quay for a circular(ish) walk, combining the Pembroke Coast Path with the National Trust Stackpole Estate.

From Stackpole Quay we walked along the coastal path to Barafundle's beautiful beach and flower-filled woods, onwards to Stackpole Head for the nesting seabirds, rock windows and the eponymous stacks masquerading as wizard hats and seals. Next up Broadhaven South - another expanse of golden sands - although by now the sun had given way to sea mist, making for pleasant walking but gloomy-looking photos.

Crossing the Castlemartin firing range we arrived at the tiny chapel of St Govan's, and then looped back towards Broadhaven turning off into the sand dunes and overgrowth to make our way to Bosherston Lakes. Lilies galore; people too. A lone swan gliding through the lily beds.

Emerging into the NT Car Park at Bosherston, we homed in on the holy grail of Mrs Weston's Tea Shop, AKA (if all you have to go on are the signs) Ye Olde Worlde Cafe. If I tell you that panini and filter coffee are considered new-fangled additions to the menu, you'll appreciate that the name is apt. Proper big tea pot of tea, with a large ceramic jug of hot water for topping up (itself topped up with alacrity), "two beans and cheese on toast" came just as hoped - not beans with a sprinkling of grated cheddar, but 1xbeans on toast and 1xcheese on toast. Plus an array of traditional condiments: salad cream, Branston pickle, English mustard. TAY-STEE.

We completed our loop back to Stackpole Quay across and alongside Bosherston Lakes and the Stackpole Deer Park, which we felt justified another cup of tea / coffee and giant slices of cake / scones at the Boathouse Tea Room before a final stroll to Stackpole's stony beach for fossil fossicking.

Back at Newgale, we indulged in Mohitos and many rounds of Uno. As night fell on the longest day, the skies turned pink before giving way to a bright crescent moon, planets and stars.

Sunday - the traditions continued: a stroll along Newgale beach, heading south along the cliff path this time, before driving back to Steffi's for one of Maurice's Marvellous Sunday lunches. Hazel and I succumbed to the post-prandial snooze for most of the drive back to Newport as a result. Another tradition - sorry Dave!

Devil's Golf Course on Badwater Lake in Death Valley. A most amazing place!!! What you are looking at is cracked up salt. In some places the salt layer is 5 feet (that's almost 2 meters) deep. What my hubby is looking for is little bubbles that pop up and then pop later from the heat. If you go here in the summer, you can hear the place pop like music.

I did find some of the salt pops but they were popped already. Later I will post a macro shot of this salt pop but I need to find it amidst the many pictures I took here.. =)

This place is in the middle of the lake and you have to drive in on a compacted "dirt" road where the dirt is salt. =) After this trip my car's "service engine soon" warning light came up and stayed the entire day. It went off the next day. I suppose German cars were not made to inhale salt vapor? =)

I was playing around with long exposure photographs. Claire (Forch2009) got given this Police Bear (called Oscar) from her work, so I thought I'd put him in lights.

I quite like the result!

Yesterday at the festival I entered, they auctioned off some of the entries to the various competitions. They held up this massive bouquet of dahlias. I love dahlias - I think they're amazing but I am rubbish at growing them.

I saw the giant bunch of dahlias, each flower larger than a baby's head, and I knew I had to have them. I bid immediately, and won them. Alastair settled my auction fees and handed me the huge cluster of dahlias.

The person standing next to me was my neighbor - a gentle man, a quiet man, a family man who cares for his ailing wife. Easily in his 70's, every summer he walks across the road and hands us punnets of tomatoes and strawberries, of vegetables and fruits that he grows. He pointed to my dahlias and smiled - "Those were the winners of the flower competition," he said.

"Really?" I replied. "But of course they should have won, they're amazing!"

He smiled shyly. "Thanks. It was my entry and they won."

And I love that I bought my own neighbor's flowers, and I love it even more that he won from them.

These three are the only pale, buttercream colored flowers out of the brightly colored bunch. I put them in a vase together and I can't stop staring at them.

This shot is straight out of the camera.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) is a contemporary art museum with three locations in greater Los Angeles, California. The main branch is located on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, near Walt Disney Concert Hall. MOCA's original space, initially intended as a "temporary" exhibit space while the main facility was built, is now known as the Geffen Contemporary, in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles. The Pacific Design Center facility is in nearby West Hollywood.

The museum's exhibits consist primarily of American and European contemporary art created since 1940.
