Though it looks small, George Mason's home is quite spacious inside. One of my favourite features was the beautiful center passage or hallway; the front and back doors are, as was common in this style of home, directly across from each other. When both doors were opened, not only was the broad center hallway between the doors cooled, fresh, cool air circulated through the other rooms in the house as well. Functionality aside, though, it is a lovely thing, the main hall.

By the way, Mason, his architect, and his groundsmen did a divine job of designing the home in coordination with the grounds. For one thing, the house was meant to stand alone, with no mature trees growing near it; according to the website, "Mason meant it to be seen standing isolated in space". The black-heart cherry tree-lined drive lead your eyes to the home along a twelve-foot-wide carriage drive; the Palladian portico you see is also twelve feet wide, as is Gunston Hall's aforementioned center passage. The rear, riverfront portico is twelve feet wide, as is the gravel path through the center of the rear garden leading toward the south and the Potomac river. The effect is quite beautiful.

The small building you see on the left side of the frame is the kitchen. The location was interesting to me, because to get to the dining room, slaves would bring the food into the hallway from the kitchen yard (there is a door and hallway leading from the center passage to the kitchen yard), past the Mr. and Mrs. Mason's bedroom on one side and the informal family dining/sitting room on the other, across the great hall, and into the dining room. Weird.

This cottage was apparently built by Henry Hersey (1795-1866) and his son, also Henry (1827-1893), possibly c. 1860, one of several in the area which were built by them. The Herseys were carpenters and bought sections 815 and 1116 prior to the 1860s, building a row of two-roomed cottages which were let for 3 shillings a week. Two larger, four-roomed cottages remain: this property and a house of the corner of Schulze and Gorge Road on section 1116.

In 1860 the cottage was the scene of a crime:

Adolph C. A. Herse was indicted for stealing 28 bunches of onions, value 2s., the property of his master, Henry Hersey, jun., at the Fifth Creek, on the 14th August last.

The prisoner had been in the employment of the prosecutor, who is a market gardener, at the Fifth Creek, and on the day named visited the sleeping apartment of the prisoner, a stable detached from the prosecutor's residence, and there, under the bed, discovered 28 bunches of onions. The prosecutor then, with a person named Sanders, put themselves in ambush to watch the proceedings of the prisoner, to see what he would do with the onions; but neither of them being able to detect the prisoner go into the stable again or leave it, both of them, after being on the look-out for several hours, returned to the prisoner's bed, but found the onions gone. On being spoken to the next day some words passed between prisoner and prosecutor, and those words the prosecutor construed into an admission of the prisoner that he took the onions.

The prosecutor, to-day, said that when he first saw the prisoner the next morning, he said to him, "How about the onions?" which at first he denied having taken, but afterwards admitted to have have taken them for the purpose of giving to a poor fellow out of work, lately in the employ of the Waterworks Commissioner, and which he had given him to sell for himself. When he first made the admission he said they were damaged, and that he had thrown them in the creek, and then went to the creek and brought some rotten ones which he (prosecutor) told him were not the same he had seen under the bed. In answer to His Honor, the prosecutor confessed he could not distinctly remember the exact replies the prisoner made to him when he questioned him about the onions.

John Sanders gave evidence of the interview between the prosecutor and prisoner. He confirmed the prosecutor's evidence that he only asked the prisoner "how about the onions?" He did not hear him charge the prisoner with stealing them.

The prisoner handed in a written defence, stating that he took the onions to give to a poor man, and that when his master found it out, he said he would forgive him if he would remain and work, which he did for several days after, and then wishing to get paid his wages, he asked for them, which the prosecutor refused to give. He then went to a lawyer to get his wages for him, who sent a letter to his master demanding them, and as soon as he received the letter, he went and laid the information against him. The statement added that the prosecution was only instituted to keep the prisoner out of his wages.

His Honor summed up, directing the Jury that the taking had been proved, and, therefore, the only question for their consideration was, whether the onions were taken with the intention to steal; and upon that question the must important part of the evidence was, that the next morning, when the prosecutor spoke to the prisoner, he did not tell him he had stolen the onions; but only asked "how about them?" shewing that - at that time, even the prosecutor did not think they were stolen. It would have been a very different matter altogether, said His Honor, if the prosecutor had said to the prisoner, "You have stolen my onions;" then any answers made by the prisoner to that charge, amounting to a confession, could be received as an admission of his guilt; but he thought both the conduct of the prisoner and the prosecutor did not amount to a supposition that the prisoner intended to steal. There was no doubt the prisoner took the onions, and it appeared he gave his master's property away to a man out of a work of charity, which he had no right to do, but that fact militated against the supposition that he intended to steal them from his master.

The Jury acquitted the prisoner.

This is a Cast Stone from Gilberto Silva is made of limestone, hand craved, the original is a Gold Disc, is made of a sheet gold that is hammered, and embossed. Here is a warrior with a long bulbous nose emerging from a warrior eagle looks down upon its victim. This raptoral figure and the frontal earth monster below resemble elements on later structure at Chichen-Itza like the temple of the warriors. The victim wears a feathered back dress and even though he has a mustache and a nose bar his reduced forehead and nose structure clearly identify him as Maya. it is significant that the face and eye of the victim were cut through in the destruction of the disc, and the eagle warrior left intact. Perhaps this was used as a charm in a ritual to bring victory to the toltec in their conquest of Chichen-Itza. After being recontructed it was thrown into the sacred well of sacrifice as an offering to the gods to bring victory in the downfall of the maya at Chichen-Itza

The Scene represents the fall of the Maya civilization in the hands of the Toltec culture, originatingat Tula in Central Méjico and coming down through Tabasco. These same people captured the city of Mayapan in Northern Yucatan. They were called Toltec ...meaning "Foreigner"

The Indian Peafowl, Pavo cristatus, also known as the Common Peafowl or the Blue Peafowl, is one of the species of bird in the genus Pavo of the Phasianidae family known as peafowl. The Indian Peafowl is a resident breeder in the Indian subcontinent. The peacock is the national bird of India.

The species is found in dry semi-desert grasslands, scrub and deciduous forests. It forages and nests on the ground but roosts on top of trees. It eats mainly seeds, but also some insects, fruits and reptiles.

Peafowl are most notable for the male's extravagant display feathers which, despite actually growing from their back, are known as a 'tail' or a train. This train is in reality not the tail but the enormously elongated upper tail coverts. The tail itself is brown and short as in the peahen. They are a result of sexual selection and are displayed as part of courtship.

CASTELLANO

FGR : fruit destruction.

and GWTL : diptychs (wk. 46 revisited....happy anniversary!)

i had a lovely nectarine...i sat and i looked at it....trying to figure out what to do to destroy it. and then i got hungry...and i ate it.

so i opted for grape jelly instead.

i never realized how sticky that stuff is. i kept adding more and more until it was all over my face, neck, and chest. it actually just looked worse the more i added, so i ended up going with two of the more minimal shots. the end ones were just gnarly looking. i tried to lick it off and got some really goofy looking shots. and then i tried to take some off and shoot some more, but it wouldn't come off so easily so then i had jelly and bits of toilet paper stuck to my face as well haha. maybe i'll post a reject later :)

so it got EVERYWHERE...i was sticky sticky sticky after this. it wouldn't come off! it was pretty bad. i was hoping that maybe i'd discovered a great new skin treatment haha. i'm just glad it didnt stain my face.

i did feel a new kinship with jelly donuts.

so in other news. i got new light bulbs on saturday and was probably way too excited about it. but they really make a huge difference...especially since i'm just using my normal house lights.

oh and my work sent me to shoot a kids' fashion show on sunday. it was pretty much an explosion of cuteness. a ton of fun.

i'll probably post a link, if not the actual shots once it's up and running.

happy tuesday everyone!!!!!

Oxalis pes-caprae (Bermuda buttercup, African wood-sorrel, Bermuda sorrel, Buttercup oxalis, Cape sorrel, English weed, Goat's-foot, Sourgrass, Soursob and Soursop) is a species of tristylous flowering plant in the wood sorrel family Oxalidaceae. Oxalis cernua is a less common synonym for this species.

Description

The Oxalis pes-caprae flower is actinomorphic, with a calyx composed of five free or slightly fused sepals, a sympetalous corolla composed of five fused petals, an apoandrous androecium composed of ten free stamens in two ranks, and a compound pistil.

[edit] Invasive species

Indigenous to South Africa, Oxalis pes-caprae or the Bermuda buttercup is a however a highly invasive species and noxious weed in many other parts of the world, including the United States (particularly coastal California), Europe, Israel and Australia.[1]

[edit] Control

The plant has a reputation for being very difficult to eliminate once it has spread over an area of land.{[2]} The weed propagates through its underground bulbs and this is the principal reason why it is so difficult to eradicate, as pulling up the stems leaves the bulbs behind. Soil in which the plant has grown is generally filled with small bulbs.[citation needed] Kluge & Claassens (1990) reported a potential biocontrol agent using Klugeana philoxalis, a larval feeder on shoots of O. pes-caprae.[3] O. pes-caprae is also a host to broomrape.[4]

[edit] Uses

Oxalis pes-caprae is often called by the common name sourgrass or soursob due to its pleasant sour flavor. This sourness is caused by oxalic acid, which is toxic in large quantities and may contribute to kidney stones.[citation needed] The plant is palatable and in modest quantities is reasonably harmless to humans and livestock. In South Africa it is a traditional ingredient in dishes such as waterblommetjiebredie (water flower stew).[citation needed] It is not a serious forage concern in South African pastures, unless favoured by overgrazing.

In some countries where the plant is invasive, such as in southern Australia, it grows in enormous quantities of high density in pastures and similar situations.[citation needed] In pastures outside South Africa where it has become dominant it can cause dramatic stock losses where, for example, hungry stock, such as sheep released just after being shorn, are let out to graze and gorge on the plant.[citation needed]

Better bigger?

I've giving in and posting this for 2 reasons;

[one] There's quite a few hours of homework ahead of me

[two] A story to go along with this

Went snowboarding today. As most ski hills are (midwest or otherwise) they are always tucked back in the middle of nowhere with windy dirt roads leading to a "mountainous" area. Here in Northern Illinois, that's exactly how it is. There is this little road I always take as a short cut and as I was driving down it, the clouds quite literally parted over this field. It's been flurrying with sun for the past couple of days so, yes, those little white dots are snowflakes. I immediately backed up the car and started *snaps snaps*. I figured I actually get out of my car to get a better angle but as I was walking up to the fence as seen above, I tried to hit the shutter and it did nothing. My little info screen read 'f EE'. So I stood in the middle of the road for a minute, somewhat paniced as my shiny new camera appeared to have pulled a Windows Vista (LOL). So I hop back in the car, grab my BlackBerry and get to Googling.

After I had driven off, I found somewhere on a forum that my camera was "frozen" and I needed to take the battery and the SD card out and let it sit for a couple days. HAHA YEAH RIGHT. So I scrolled down some more and came across another post that simply said, "check the aperture ring, sometimes it can get twisted or knocked out of the lock." And tada, that would be the cure :D So all ended well... except for my crappy snowboarding shots. They...well, they just didn't work out so well, so I leave you with this to ponder.

Cape Town (Afrikaans and Dutch: Kaapstad; Xhosa: iKapa) is the third most populous city in South Africa, forming part of the metropolitan municipality of the City of Cape Town. It is the provincial capital of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are located. Cape Town is famous for its harbour as well as its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Often regarded as one of the world's most beautiful cities because of its geography, Cape Town is one of the most popular South African destinations for tourism.

Cape Town was originally developed as a victualling station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East more than 200 years before the construction of the Suez Canal in 1869. Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope. It was the largest city in South Africa until the growth of Johannesburg and Durban.

According to the 2001 Census, the city has a population of 2.95 million.[2] Cape Town's land area of 2,499 square kilometres (965 sq mi) is larger than other South African cities, resulting in a comparatively lower population density of 1,158 people per square kilometre (2,999/sq mi).[2] Cape Town is town twinned with Nice in France and Haifa in Israel.

Another view of the Saiho-ji garden - Koke Dera (Moss temple) Kyoto

Old temple with heartshaped moss garden, designed in 1339.

You can't visit the temple itself. To visit the garden you need to make a reservation at least a week beforehand via a letter/postcard with return postage/card and you need to join in a ritual including painting/writing down a wish before you can visit the garden. It rained all morning, making it look even amazingly greener than it already is. Quite a challenge to photograph though, while holding an umbrella too :-)

The maple leaves were already starting to change colour in August.

We had M 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 (Japan time) on March 11th, 2011. The earthquake created huge tsunami waves of up to 20 meters (66 ft), 5 stories building was covered by the water, that struck Japan coast minutes after the earthquake.

We are still having aftershocks. www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/quake_singen_index.html

The death toll will be expected to be 15,000 or more. About 523,288 people become refegees.

Radiation leaks led to a 30 km-radius evacuation around Fukushima I and II nuclear plants. Almost 20,000 people needs to evacuate from the area.

Fukushima I and II Nuclear Power Plants got damaged and four reactors exploaded. The reactor 1 had helium explosion and the outer building got damaged , has possible meltdown and part of the rod is exposed. The reactor 2 had has possible meltdown and all the rod is exposed. The radiation level is so high. (They do not show the number) The reactor 3 had helium explosion and the outer building got damaged, apart of the rod is exposed. The reactor 4 had unknown caused explosion and got two 8 feet diameter holes in the building. The water level of the reactor 5 is significantly decrease. 5 out of 6 reactors of Fukushima I are in great danger. We might get radiation poisoning even we are in Tokyo (About 120 miles from the plants). The level of radiation was 0.809 microsievert per one hour which means 9.1416 microsievert per a day in Tokyo yesterday. They said that it is safe but I beleive that if this situation lasts longer time, it will be very harmful for our health.

The Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the radiation level reached 400 millisievert per hour next to Unit-3 of Fukushima-I nuclear plant on March 15 and the radiation level reached over 1,000 millisievert per hour near the front gate of Fukushima nuclear plant at around 10:00 am on March 16.

It says that if a person exposed 1,000 millisievert to 2,000 millisievert, 10% risk of death after 30 days.

Two other nuclear plants in Ibaraki and Onagawa are in danger too.

Six nuclear plants got damage and stopped working. So, we have huge power shortage and we will have scheduled black out since March 14th. It depens on the area but usually 2 to 4 hours, we have blackout. Many railways running trains maybe 30 to 70% of normal schedules and also only limited area. Everybody is trying to buy bottled water, rice, bread, noodles, rice cake, milk, batteries, flashlight, and Portable Butane Gas Camp Stove. Some local cities adivice their residents not to go outside, if needs to go outside, needs to wear masks and wear long sleeves cloth to cover the skin, change the clothes when get home and put the clothes in a plastic bag, wash your hands and hair throughly. The city we live do not take any precausious measure, public schools are open and kids are running around in the school ground. I am glad that my daughter does not need to go to the school due to the bullying and school violence.

We had M6 class earthquake again twice last night.

My mother, my daughter and I are safe from the eathquakes at this moment. We shut all the windows tight, close the vent and try to stay home for the safety.

Devastated northeast, already short of water, food, medicine, blanket, diapers, electricity and heat. The evacuees are trying to keep warm in near-freezing temperatures. I saw on TV that it is difficult to get hot water there, so mothers cannot make formula milk for babies. So they give the babies some juice and other soft food instead. I hope there will no futher damages in the devasted areas and could get help from unaffected areas. It's heartbreaking to see the hardership on evacuees.

Thank you for your support, prayers and friendship.

Love happened at last,

And we entered God's paradise,

Sliding

Under the skin of the water

Like fish.

We saw the precious pearls of the sea

And were amazed.

Love happened at last

Without intimidation...with symmetry of wish.

So I gave...and you gave

And we were fair.

It happened with marvelous ease

Like writing with jasmine water,

Like a spring flowing from the ground.

My favourite "Zar " :) Nizar Qabbani (21 March 1923 – 30 April 1998) was a Syrian diplomat, poet and publisher.

At the age of 15, his sister (25) committed suicide because she could not marry the man she loved. During her funeral he decided to fight the social conditions he saw as causing her death. When asked whether he was a revolutionary, the poet answered: "Love in the Arab world is like a slave and I want to free it. I want to free the Arab soul and body of my poems. Relationships between men and women in our world are not right."

In 1973 he married Balqis al-rawi, an Iraqi teacher whom he had met at a poetry recital in Baghdad. She was killed in a bomb attack by pro-Iranian guerrillas in Beirut in 1981 while working for the Iraqi embassy's cultural section.

He is perhaps the most revered contemporary poet in the Arab world.

Chatnu is a small village mid way between Rohtang-La and Kunzum-La. infact this was the first village and first human figures that we saw after hours of driving, and it was very comforting.

the total population of the village is 120 (interestingly the population of india is 120 million I guess). its a very sweet small village with a very few homes and more than 3 restaurants, unbelievably, you can have awesome north Indian meal. We just started thinking that they probably use the yak butter and yak milk for the preparations but when we asked them, they proudly said 'Amul Butter' :)

The dhaba we were eating was called Kunzum Dhaba. The Buddhist atmosphere was already apparent way before this village.

last of the autos for a while......

ENGLISH

The Xallas river is a small European river at northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, that passes through the province of Corunna, Galicia, Spain and ends at the Atlantic Ocean.

Winding by the Region of the Xallas, with its 65 km in length, a river basin of 504 km ² of extension, a volume of little more than 13 cubic meters by a second and great unevenness that turns it a generator of 133,000 kW of hydraulic power produced in 6 hydroelectric power stations of private property.

At the moment the mouth of the river has been canalized to take advantage of the energy and therefore the water no longer hurries in cascade over the ria, with the exception of Sundays in summer.

During my lunch hour today I wandered down to the Water of Leith for some dipper shots. Got a few okay ones but mostly throwaway. On my way back to the office my attention was drawn to loud chirping in the trees at Belford Road and to my delight around 6 Long-tailed tits were hopping about. Out of the corner of my eye I saw two land on a nearby branch and one of them began hanging upside down. It took a second to realise that it was dangling helplessly because its wing had somehow got stuck. Now that I've scrutinised the shots, it would appear that the wing is literally glued to the end of the branch where some sap is.

The poor thing dangled helplessly as the rain started and the wind picked up. Other long-tails landed beside it and looked down in what appeared to be a show of concern. They certainly knew something was wrong. There was lots of anxious tweeting. Eventually the bird managed to pull itself up enough to start pulling away at its wing feather. To no avail at first, and I really thought it was going to end up dying there.

But the story has a happy ending as the wee thing eventually managed to rip its wing free, with minimal damage it would appear. I hope so anyway!

Does anyone know if this is a common occurence. I'm aware that tree sap is extremely sticky and could act like a sort of glue to a delicate feather but surely this kind of thing doesn't happen too often.

Zomer van Antwerpen

Allen die vallen (schouwspel)

Schonen dag om een koerske te doen

Comp. Marius
