"Peas and Carrots" - Lobster Crepe with Carrot Ginger Emulsion and Pea Shoots (Thomas Keller Recipe from "The French Laundry Cookbook")

A part of my Mother's Day menu

We removed the grey (shown in lower left) beds, and leveled out the terrace. Vee is adding to the already planted peas that Becky started earlier in the year.

we're addicted to the chick pea - especially the dried ones you have to hydrate and cook yourself. the flavor and texture is far superior to the canned variety and you can't beat the price.

scot had been talking about wanting to turn it into a crunchy snack so i poked around on the interweb and came up with this recipe for inspiration. i did a half recipe just in case it turned out terrible and then i split what i made in half and made one the sweet and spicy mix [left cup] by adding some brown sugar just as it came out of the oven. i preferred the sweet and spicy mix but both were satisfying to munch on and made a great salad topper. next time i think i'll bake it longer to have a crispier texture.

unfortunately i did not take photos of the cake before everyone dug in, but it was my baby shower and i didn't want to be distracted by taking photos. so this photo was taken after everyone dug in and i rescued some of the pea pods that were set aside.

robert and i saw this baby shiba commercial our flickr friend lamont cranston posted and after seeing it, i thought baby shiba (part of memishiba) would be a fun theme for the baby's room. the inspiration for this pea pod themed cake was the character edamame from memishiba. these pea pods are not intended in anyway to look like edamame. i just told my buddy misty about a talking pea pod and she ran with it.

I've always kind of enjoyed cooking. When I got my first house I sent a lot of time experimenting with all sorts of strange concoctions in the kitchen, but later years saw laziness setting in and a reduction in my culinary activity.

The last few months, though, I've rediscovered my love of cooking. My girlfriend and I decided that we were eating far too much packaged food so we've been eating almost entirely fresh food for a while. We've found some good cookbooks and we've been rustling up lots of food from scratch.

I've done most of the cooking (Jo isn't a fan of pans etc) and we've felt much better for it. Some of the meals have been absolutely lovely, especially when we've tried the odd Jamie Oliver recipe - he really does write some good, tasty recipes.

Today saw me cooking a hearty lamb stew (not by Jamie, or even anyone famous). It involved lots of shallots among plenty of other vegetables from our local greengrocer, and some delicious lamb as purchased from our local butcher.

Buying from the local shops is much preferable than upping the profits at the supermarket I think.

These peas, though, came from Sainsbury's. It's almost impossible to buy everything from the shops on the high street. Still, the meal was delicious and lasted us for two days.

Yum!

A New Year's Day tradition -- black eyed peas are supposed to ensure good luck in the new year, while greens supposedly bring money into your life.

For Valentine's Day I made shrimp cocktail for an appetizer, london broil and peas with smoked bacon and mint as the main course, and we had Coldstone ice cream cake for dessert.

Peas, growing on our plants.

Growing and harvesting last year's batch of peas was a fiasco so we spent the winter scheming alternatives to the wonky setup we'd agreed didn't work well.

This year we planted them in a triangle-shaped raised garden bed. I planted the rows in three triangle shapes, one inside the next. Once the seeds began to appear I stuck oh, 13-15 tall tomato cages into the entire bed, so no matter where the plant was located or where it might be coming up it'd have one of several supports to start climb immediately.

SO much better!

Sun Grown -- February 2014

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth ; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
