I visited Osborne House on the Isle of Wight last week and saw the most amazing section of cloth I have ever seen in my life. I almost hyperventilated!

It was (poorly) displayed in the Children's Museum near the Swiss Cottage at the back of the property, and although the attendant refused to let me photograph it, I did manage to make a quick sketch.

The portion of cloth on display was, I think, linen, and was described as

"Mummy cloth : Bearing the makers name, from the Tomb of Kings, Thebes. c1600BC".

Wow. This small piece of cloth is over 3,000 years old!!

It was in wonderful condition, with no holes or marks on it, possibly due to the preservatives in the Mummy itself.

The makers mark was printed on to the cloth and was as fresh as the day it was made. I imagine that it was a very skilled worker who would be allowed to weave such a prestigious cloth.

I have machine embroidered a copy of the mark on to a piece of rusted calico, and placed this on a card.

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY. MAXIMIZING POTENTIAL.

On July 29, DAV hosted inaugural Day of Inspiration in Tampa, Florida, ahead of the 2021 DAV and Auxiliary National Convention. Veterans and active military members in the Tampa area and beyond were invited to participate in a free, one-day event to hear from nationally recognized speakers who delivered powerful stories throughout the day.

The Voigtlander Color Skopar 21/4P produces a bit of magenta cast in the borders when used on a NEX 6. One way to overcome this is to use cornerfix - which requires the acquisition and processing of a calibration image and creation of a lens profile. To apply the correction, one needs to convert the NEX RAW files to DNG, then run cornerfix on those DNG files. Adds a bit of time and hassle to the workflow but seems to work quite well; once set up, it runs automatically in batch mode. I am not fully correcting the vignetting; I remove only about 30%.

Sony recently released a "lens correction" app that could be used to eliminate the magenta cast; I am currently evaluating that approach too. It's not a post-processing fix like cornerfix, but works directly in camera. Makes it a little hard to adjust since one only has the small screen to work with. Probably best to make some adjustments, download to the computer for evaluation, and then refine the parameters in camera iteratively.

Mom and I are TERRIFIED of spiders. So while at the museum we decided to overcome our fears and hold the two tarantulas they had out for people to handle. They were actually very soft feeling and light as a feather. My only regret is that no one was around to take my picture as proof. These are my mom's hands.
