This is a thorough and helpful self-help book for those wishing to learn how to clean out their house while battling the compulsive thoughts that drove them to hoard. It is still rather dry reading and still relies heavily on a rational, logical approach, but the authors have a humorous and light touch and are much more detailed, systematic, pragmatic and practical than the hoarding specialists they learned from, who wrote their own self-help book, Buried In Treasures a few years after.
This book focuses much more on the actual process of the clean out. Through them I actually learned what is meant by cognitive therapy as applied to hoarders and that is to use rational questioning techniques to challenge the automatic thoughts with Aristotlean logic. They categorize automatic thoughts into those that cherry pick the negative, using feelings to prove yourself right, overgeneralizing and jumping to conclusions and all the rest of the guilt making tools of blame and black and white thinking.
They suggest using flash cards to identify the automatic thought, then categorizing the thought per the above cherry picking and finally reframing the thought in a more even handed rational and positive fashion to foster self-encouragement.
In the same fashion I was more clear about exposure with response prevention E/RP technique. And this is to identify a source for acquisitions such as a garage sale at the high end of the desire scale (using SUDS rating system) or a grocery store at the low end, then expose yourself to these sources of compulsive acquisition starting with the low end and practicing resistance while noticing anxiety level.

This book works for me because it involves exploring one's thoughts and writing them down rather than being led through hypothetical thoughts in a workbook style. And the step by step program to target an area and systematically remove each item one by one, appealed to my do-it-yourself nuts and bolts approach. Their three and a half boxes system includes a save box, throw out box, display box (for items belonging in the space) and a to-do immediately box for things found that need urgent action. I have not used a display box before.
I also liked that they go for clearing a space that will offer a visual reward, then moving on towards hidden storage like drawers and cupboards. This is my method to build momentum on the visual success. And they describe how to break down a project and focus on it in a way that is very plain speaking and descriptive which is where the rubber meets the road in self-help books.
This book is required reading for hoarding specialist certificate.

We took a walk where we live, and ended up in this field, with lots of old dumped machinery (even an old beetle car), a tractor or two, some bikes, gates.. you get the idea.

To stand on the summit of Lupoglav, second highest peak of Prenj, in winter, and admire Himalayan kind of winter scenery, many things have to come together.
If this is how mild and dry winter looks up there just imagine the real winter. But even if you remove all the winter mountain weather obstacles it's still a huge climb, amazing 2000m altitude difference from the valley. There isn't a bigger climb in the entire Dinaric Alps.
Some 30 years ago 3 mountaineers lost their lives on Lupoglav in mid February. In their memory there is memorial climb each winter around that time of month. Many climbs failed because of all kind of inhumane conditions. But this year mountain was merciful and we overcame.

The #12 Winston-Salem State University Rams could not overcome costly penalties and a late fumble, as they fell to #23 Valdosta State 22-17 in Powder Springs, GA Saturday evening.
The loss drop Winston-Salem State to 1-1, while Valdosta State improves to 2-0.
The game was a rematch of the 2012 DII National Championship game, and it lived up to its billing in an exciting game.
After a scoreless first quarter, Valdosta State got on the board first on a Jake Medlock one yard run for score, and the ensuing two point conversion game the Blazers an early 8-0 lead.
After another Ram punt, the WSSU defense bowed up, with Terry Ross intercepting a Jake Medlock pass and returning it 52 yards for a touchdown to move the Rams to within one at 8-7.
But Valdosta State would answer right back with a 10 play, 70 yard drive finished off by a Cedric O'Neal three yard run to push the Blazers back out to a 15-7 lead heading into the locker room at the half.
WSSU would take the second half kick and march 60 yards in 12 plays, but could only manage a 21 yard field goal from Alejandro Suarez, as the drive stalled, cutting the Valdosta State lead to 15-10.
Once again however, the WSSU Rams could not get off the field on third down, as it led to another Blazer score. This time O'Neal reached the endzone from five yards out to push Valdosta State out to a 22-10 lead in heading into the fourth quarter.
WSSU's Phil Sims would lead the Rams on a long 14 play, 99 yard scoring drive, capped by Sims' first touchdown pass as a Ram, when he would hook up with Marcel Caver for a 15 yard scoring pass and reception to pull the Rams to within five, at 22-17.
Winston-Salem State's defense would continue to play well and forced VSU to punt on several occasions, and the Rams seemed to have the momentum as they would get the ball back with 6:52 left to play.
Rudy Johnson would lead the Rams on a 10 play drive, but on first and goal, Johnson would turn the corner and would score, but eh play would be called back for a holding penalty. On the next play, Johnson would be hit and fumbled and Valdosta would recover at the 12 yard line.
The WSSU defense would stand tall once more, to force a punt, but Valdosta's Medlock would pinned the Rams deep, as he would kick a 75 yard punt, pinning the Rams at the two yard line with 1:09 left.
Phil Sims would find Donovan Rasberry twice, and Jamal Haizlip once to get the ball to midfield with 10 seconds left to play.
But on the final play, Phil Sims' hail mary pass would be knocked down at the goal line, giving the Valdosta State Blazers the 22-17 upset win.
Winston-Salem State did out produce the Blazers in yardage (399 to 391), but the Valdosta State defense kept the pressure on Rudy Johnson and Phil Sims all afternoon, forcing the Rams into just 15 of 44 passing. WSSU was also flagged eight times for 71 yards.
Offensively for WSSU, Rudy Johnson led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 64 yards, while Maurice Lewis rushed 12 times for 42 yards. Tyree Massey rushed seven times for 34 yards.
Phil Sims finished the afternoon just nine of 29 passing for 146 yards and one touchdown, while Rudy Johnson went six of 14 for 116 yards.
Marcel Caver led the Rams in receiving with five catches for 57 yards and one touchdown, while Eric Williams finished with three catches for 80 yards. Bronson Green (40 yds), Jalen McDaniel (37 yds) and Donovan Rasberry (34 yds) had two catches each.
Terry Ross led the Rams defensively, with 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one pass breakup and one interception returned 52 yards for a score. James Hickman finished with nine tackles and Duvontae Covington finished with seven, and Xavier Gregory six tackles on the afternoon.
Winston-Salem State will come back home to Bowman Gray Stadium next week for another tough out of conference matchup, this time hosting the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University at 6:00 pm.

An inspirational teenager from Knowsley who’s overcome deafness to succeed in international swimming has won a key award.
Luke Nisted, who’s 16 and from Huyton, achieved six personal bests in the World Deaf Swimming Championships last year.
He trains for 12 hours a week and is in the Great Britain deaf swimming team. He’s now raising money take part in the Deaf Olympics in Bulgaria.
He’s been awarded the Disability Sport and Physical Activity Achievement Award at a ceremony at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park.
The annual Knowsley Sport and Physical Activity Achievement (SPAA) awards honour local sporting heroes.
Among the prize winners were volunteers, coaches, junior achievers, school sports teams, sports clubs and people who’ve fought back from illness.
“We’re so proud of Luke,” said his mum Tracey.
“He’s a really quiet lad and just comes home, does his homework and then goes to his swimming. He trains really hard.
“Being deaf means he has to concentrate hard – he has a device he takes to events that lights up to let him know when the race starts.”
Other winners on the night were Luke Benbow, who’s 11 and was named Young Volunteer of the Year for his work with Whiston Willis girls football team.
Millie Billingsley, who’s from Huyton, is Active Achiever of the Year for her hard work to regain her health and fitness on the council’s Activity for Life programme.
The Contribution to Health Award went to the Fighting Fit Community Group who organise walks and exercise sessions for local people.
Aaron Hughes, who’s 10, was named Junior Active Achiever for the improvements he’s made to his own health and the football team at St Aidan’s Primary won the School Sport Team Achievement Award.
