Bangor produced an awesome display of power and composure to overcome a strong Clogher Valley side by 9-6 and book their place in this season’s final.

With both sides able to field their full-strength starting fifteens, backed up by an equally proficient seven man bench, this all-Ulster semi-final between two of the top teams within the Qualifying League had caught the attention of many rugby enthusiasts who were anticipating a memorable contest. The playing surface and weather conditions were just about perfect, with what little breeze there was blowing across the pitch and of little advantage to either side.

With hundreds of spectators lining the touchlines, and many more watching from the warmth and comfort of the clubhouse, Bangor’s Jason Morgan got proceedings underway. The home side didn’t want to repeat the early mistakes of last week’s game at CIYMS, and appeared to be focussed from the outset. However, Clogher Valley were obviously mindful of their last visit to Upritchard Park and started with power and purpose. The first couple of set pieces showed why their pack is a force to be reckoned with, pushing Bangor back with worrying ease. Building on this early dominance, Clogher took play into Bangor’s twenty two and mounted several good attacking moves. Bangor’s defence held firm on each occasion, until Clogher decided the only way they were going to come away with some points for these efforts was to take a drop goal, giving them an early lead by 0-3.

Having been under considerable pressure, Bangor started to work their way back into the game and were eventually rewarded with a Mark Widdowson penalty, which levelled the scores at 3-3 after 20 minutes. Further pressure from the home side soon resulted in another Clogher infringement at the breakdown, which resulted in another Widdowson penalty which put Bangor ahead for the first time by 6-3.

Although Clogher still looked dangerous in attack, when Bangor regained possession they quickly turned defence into attack through sensible and accurate positional kicking from Jason Morgan. Having gained good territory, Bangor then fought hard to stay there, even to the point where they managed to charge down two Clogher clearance kicks, although to the visitors’ relief the ball bounced out of play. However, the sustained pressure being exerted through Bangor’s back line eventually led to another penalty, which Widdowson converted to extend the lead to 9-3, which brought the first half to a close.

The first good attacking opportunity of the second half fell to Clogher after just 6 minutes. From a penalty in mid-field, a good kick brought the line-out close to Bangor’s 5 metre line. This is usually the platform from where Clogher are most deadly – their line-out and driving maul is a difficult force to stop. However, Bangor were prepared and not only stopped the drive, but turned the ball over and cleared their lines. Then to drive home the fact, they did it again a few minutes later. Given Clogher’s rightful reputation for their prowess in this area, the defensive response by Bangor’s forwards was truly impressive.

The only worrying time for Bangor came after 14 minutes when captain Jamie Clegg was somewhat harshly yellow-carded for pulling down a maul. From the resulting penalty, Clogher clawed back 3 points, making the score now 9-6.

However, obviously buoyed by their earlier dominance in the forwards, the seven man scrum of Bangor was now pushing the eight man Clogher pack backwards. Psychologically, this was a turning point, as Bangor now assumed control and prevented their opponents from developing any meaningful attacks. This, combined with Morgan’s positional kicking, resulted in Clogher being pinned down for most of the final quarter in their own half. Clogher’s situation became even more difficult when, after 22 minutes, one of their second row forwards was yellow-carded for not rolling away from a tackle.

With both sides finding it hard to break through each other’s defence, Bangor played tactically by simply preventing their opponents to build meaningful attacks through committed and effective defence, and then pushing them back deep into their own territory through long kicks for touch. On at least two occasions, Bangor came close to crossing Clogher’s line through breaks by Curtis Stewart and Davy Charles. They then had an opportunity within the final 5 minutes to extend their lead when Widdowson had another penalty kick from the right of Clogher’s posts. However, a sudden attack of cramp in his run-up resulted in the kick being miss-hit, and the ball drifted wide of the mark. Although disappointed not to have scored, Bangor stuck to their plan, and continued to thwart any chance of a counter attack, finally running down the clock to record a famous victory.

While the final score-line may not suggest it, this was an enthralling game from start to finish, played in good spirit and without any major injuries. For the visitors’ part, they may feel that they didn’t play to their normal high standard. However, they came up against a Bangor side that has proved so far in this competition that it can match and better the best junior sides in Ireland. Bangor’s route to the final has been as difficult as it could be possible – Clonmel (one of the pre-tournament favourites, and Munster champions) in round 1, Enniscorthy (the current cup holders) in the quarter finals, and now Clogher Valley (last year’s beaten finalists, and the current QL1 champions) in the semis. What lies ahead on 31st January 2015 is still unclear, following a 25-25 draw at the other semi-final between CIYMS and Dundalk. What is clear, however, is that Bangor can rightly look forward in confidence to face whoever is to come between them and the title. In the meantime, there are still vital games ahead in the league, resuming with a home fixture against Cooke next weekend.

The sculpted metopes of the Parthenon (square reliefs set at regular interval above the colonnade, 32 on each long side, 12 on each main facade) must have formed a magnificent sequence when complete. They followed a different narrative on each of the four sides of the temple, the battle of Gods & Giants to the east, Greeks & Amazons to the west, the Trojan War to the north and the battle of the Lapiths & Centaurs to the south.

Tragically the majority of these fine works were brutally hacked away when the Parhenon was cinverted unto a church in the 4th century AD; all but those on the south side (and one on the north) were systematically mutilated so that only ghostly shapes of the figures remain. Clearly their pagan content caused offence, but it is odd that they were so severly treated when the frieze and pediment sculptures (except the central eastern group) remained untouched.

Jacques Carrey drew the surviving 32 metopes in 1674, which is fortunate as only thirteen years later the explosion that ripped through the Parthenon in 1687 destroyed roughly half of them, mainly those that portrayed an undetermined narrative, the surviving pieces all represent centaurs in combat with young men or abducting women.

These sculptures, havin survived the explosion of 1687 that tore the Parthenon apart, and were removed by Lord Elgin's agents in the 1800s and sent to London where they currently remain. 18 survive of the original 32 of which 15 are in the British Museum; another is in the Louvre, one is in the Acropolis Museum and another remains in situ on the Parthenon (as do the mutilated east, west and north metopes).

The sculptures of the Parthenon (pediments, metopes and frieze)remain generally recognised as the most accomplished (both in terms of technical mastery and beauty of design) scheme of architectural sculpture ever realised. That so much of it has been lost (particulaly as the building remained substantially intact and in use continuously until 1687) is a tragedy, judging by what remains.

The Karlsruhe castle is the center of the Karlsruhe fan. It was built in 1715-1718 by order of Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach and was until 1918 Royal Palace of each reigning sovereign (Margrave, later Grand Duke of Baden).

General

Before the castle lies the Palace Square. Directly behind the castle begins the castle garden. The castle along with court and garden does not belong to the city of Karlsruhe, but the state of Baden-Württemberg. It houses the Badische State Museum and the castle café.

From the castle tower you can enjoy a very good view into the Karlsruhe fan. To experience this, though, 158 steps in the castle tower have got to overcome.

In October 2013, the castle for a comprehensive facade and roof renovation was completely scaffolded. The state invests four million euros in the measures. The scaffolds are likely to be dismantled in March 2015 and thus before the extensive celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the city. In addition to optical measures thereby porous sandstone and rotten wood must be replaced. The previous facade renovation took place in 1988.

History

Original construction in 1715

Architect of built 1715-1718 castle was the engineer lieutenant Jakob Friedrich von Batzendorf, construction manager was Heinrich Schwartz from Hamburg. The outer walls as well as the castle tower, which constituted a novelty at that time, were built of stone, the interior design was built for reasons of cost of wood. The western wing was, also for reasons of cost, originally shorter than the eastern wing which also contained a ballroom, an opera house and a chapel.

Renovation and reconstruction from 1750

From 1750, the castle had got to be thoroughly overhauled because it was originally built with poor building materials. In the period 1752-1785 it was according to repeatedly revised plans by Balthasar Neumann of Albrecht Friedrich von Kesslau (around 1728-1788), the then Planning Director at Baden Court, and his successor Wilhelm Jeremias Müller in the Baroque style completely rebuilt of stone. in doing so, the castle itself has been changed several times in the interior and refurbished.

The garden hall was 1819 the venue of the Second Chamber of the Parliament of Baden.

In 1846 the castle rooms and the Palace Square and the adjoining south ministries were first illuminated by means of city gas and gas lanterns.

Baden Revolution 1848/1849

1849, Grand Duke Leopold of Baden by revolutionaries temporarily was expelled from the castle.

20th century

Until the death of Grand Duke Friedrich I in 1907 he lived also in the castle. After the death of Frederick I his wife Grand Duchess Louise did not move to a widow's seat but remained until the end of the monarchy in 1918 in the castle; her son, now Grand Duke Friedrich II, continued to live in Hereditary Grand Ducal Palais (today the BGH/Federal Supreme Court).

1921, in the former Residence the collections for Archaeology and Ethnology and the stocks of the Museum of Decorative Arts as Badisches Landesmuseum were merged.

During World War II the whole castle got a dark camouflage to complicate target recognition from the air. In September 1944, the Karlsruhe Castle was nevertheless totally destroyed by bombing. It was rebuilt - despite interim considerations to demolish the ruins for creating new living space - and restored the historic facade. During reconstruction halls have been created which correspond with the latest technical conditions in museum buildings.

Maryland State House

The tower of the State House in Annapolis, Maryland (USA), is the tower of Karlsruhe Castle so similar that it is speculated that this is a replica.

Allgemein

Vor dem Schloss liegt der Schlossplatz. Direkt hinter dem Schloss beginnt der Schlossgarten. Das Schloss samt Platz und Garten gehört nicht der Stadt Karlsruhe, sondern dem Land Baden-Württemberg. Es beherbergt das Badische Landesmuseum und das Schlosscafé.

Vom Schlossturm aus bietet sich ein sehr guter Blick in den Karlsruher Fächer. Um diesen erleben zu können, sind allerdings 158 Stufen im Schlossturm zu überwinden.

Im Oktober 2013 wurde das Schloss für eine umfassende Fassaden- und Dachsanierung vollständig eingerüstet. Das Land investiert vier Millionen Euro in die Maßnahmen. Die Baugerüste sollen voraussichtlich im März 2015 wieder abgebaut werden und damit vor den umfangreichen Feierlichkeiten anlässlich des 300. Stadtjubiläums. Neben optischen Maßnahmen muss dabei poröser Sandstein und verfaultes Holz ersetzt werden. Die vorhergehende Fassadenrenovierung fand im Jahr 1988 statt.

Geschichte

Ursprünglicher Bau 1715

Architekt des zwischen 1715 und 1718 gebauten Schlosses war der Ingenieur-Leutnant Jakob Friedrich von Batzendorf, Bauleiter war Heinrich Schwartz aus Hamburg. Die Außenmauern sowie der Schlossturm, der zu jener Zeit ein Novum darstellte, wurden aus Stein erbaut, der Innenausbau wurde aus Kostengründen aus Holz errichtet. Der westliche Flügel war, ebenfalls aus Kostengründen, ursprünglich kürzer als der östliche Flügel, der auch einen Ballsaal, ein Opernhaus und eine Kapelle enthielt.

Sanierung und Umbau ab 1750

Ab 1750 musste das Schloss grundlegend saniert werden, weil es ursprünglich mit schlechtem Baumaterial gebaut worden war. In der Zeit zwischen 1752 und 1785 wurde es nach mehrfach geänderten Plänen Balthasar Neumanns von Albrecht Friedrich von Kesslau (um 1728-1788), dem damaligen Baudirektor am badischen Hof, und von seinem Nachfolger Wilhelm Jeremias Müller im Stil des Barock vollständig aus Stein umgebaut. Dabei wurde das Schloss auch im Inneren mehrfach verändert und neu möbliert.

Der Gartensaal war 1819 der Tagungsort der Zweiten Kammer des badisches Parlaments.

Im Jahr 1846 wurden die Schlossräume sowie der Schlossplatz und die südlich daran angrenzenden Ministerien erstmals mittels Stadtgas und Gaslaternen beleuchtet.

Badische Revolution 1848/1849

1849 wurde Großherzog Leopold von badischen Revolutionären zeitweise aus dem Schloss vertrieben.

20. Jahrhundert

Bis zum Tod Großherzog Friedrichs I. im Jahr 1907 wohnte dieser auch im Schloss. Nach dem Tod Friedrichs I. zog dessen Gemahlin Großherzogin Luise nicht auf einen Witwensitz, sondern blieb bis zum Ende der Monarchie 1918 im Schloss; ihr Sohn, nun Großherzog Friedrich II., wohnte weiterhin im Erbgroßherzoglichen Palais (heute Sitz des BGH).

1921 wurden in der ehemaligen Residenz die Sammlungen für Altertums- und Völkerkunde und die Bestände des Kunstgewerbemuseums als Badisches Landesmuseum zusammengeführt.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg erhielt das ganze Schloss einen dunklen Tarnanstrich, um eine Zielerfassung aus der Luft zu erschweren. Im September 1944 wurde das Karlsruher Schloss durch Bombenangriffe dennoch total zerstört. Es wurde wiederaufgebaut – trotz zwischenzeitlicher Überlegungen, die Ruine für die Schaffung neuen Wohnraumes abzureißen – und die historische Fassade wiederhergestellt. Beim Wiederaufbau wurden den neuesten museumstechnischen Bedingungen entsprechende Säle gestaltet.

This is a thorough and helpful self-help book for those wishing to learn how to clean out their house while battling the compulsive thoughts that drove them to hoard. It is still rather dry reading and still relies heavily on a rational, logical approach, but the authors have a humorous and light touch and are much more detailed, systematic, pragmatic and practical than the hoarding specialists they learned from, who wrote their own self-help book, Buried In Treasures a few years after.

This book focuses much more on the actual process of the clean out. Through them I actually learned what is meant by cognitive therapy as applied to hoarders and that is to use rational questioning techniques to challenge the automatic thoughts with Aristotlean logic. They categorize automatic thoughts into those that cherry pick the negative, using feelings to prove yourself right, overgeneralizing and jumping to conclusions and all the rest of the guilt making tools of blame and black and white thinking.

They suggest using flash cards to identify the automatic thought, then categorizing the thought per the above cherry picking and finally reframing the thought in a more even handed rational and positive fashion to foster self-encouragement.

In the same fashion I was more clear about exposure with response prevention E/RP technique. And this is to identify a source for acquisitions such as a garage sale at the high end of the desire scale (using SUDS rating system) or a grocery store at the low end, then expose yourself to these sources of compulsive acquisition starting with the low end and practicing resistance while noticing anxiety level.

This book works for me because it involves exploring one's thoughts and writing them down rather than being led through hypothetical thoughts in a workbook style. And the step by step program to target an area and systematically remove each item one by one, appealed to my do-it-yourself nuts and bolts approach. Their three and a half boxes system includes a save box, throw out box, display box (for items belonging in the space) and a to-do immediately box for things found that need urgent action. I have not used a display box before.

I also liked that they go for clearing a space that will offer a visual reward, then moving on towards hidden storage like drawers and cupboards. This is my method to build momentum on the visual success. And they describe how to break down a project and focus on it in a way that is very plain speaking and descriptive which is where the rubber meets the road in self-help books.

This book is required reading for hoarding specialist certificate.
