For my Final Major Project I'm doing a Marie Zucker/Wendy Bevan/Heiner Luepke inspired shoot. As part of my project I have to sample different films and experiment and stuff. This sample was actually inspired by Mari Sarai, who does out of focus fashion shoots. Hence the out of focus photos.

Reaching out to the Lights of Hope - by Taiwan acrobatic troupe performing at River Hongbao'08. Amazed with the photo shot with D300 lifeview and a 200 mm lenses.

Recently I took a ride on the Metra passenger train from Wheaton to the end of the line in Elburn, Illinois just to see what there was to see. I have taken photos along that route at street level and know all the views like the back of my hand. Being on the inside gave me a chance to enjoy the countryside scenery and see what was out there from this perspective. I snapped a lot of photos along the way but the green tinted windows really made it challenging to get a shot, not to mention they were a bit dirty on the outside, too. But, I worked on this one a bit in editing and this is the result. This is taken from the middle track as we approached the Elburn station.

Clashes broke out between Hong Kong police and protesters on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday, with officers firing tear gas in Wong Tai Sin, Tsuen Wan and Sha Tin.

Meanwhile, thousands marched across Hong Kong island to protest the local administration as well as the Chinese Communist Party.

In direct opposition to the celebrations in Beijing, marchers said that they were marking a “day of mourning.”

“There is no National Day celebration, only a national tragedy,” demonstrators shouted – a new slogan coined specifically for October 1.

The Civil Human Rights Front applied to host a peaceful march on Tuesday, but police said that the organisers were unable to guarantee that no clashes would take place.

An attempt to appeal the ban failed on Monday.

Nevertheless, four pro-democracy activists – veterans Lee Cheuk-yan, Albert Ho, “Long Hair” Leung Kwok-hung as well as Figo Chan – said they would march from Causeway Bay despite the police ban

Separately, violence broke out at rallies held in Wong Tai Sin, Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan and Sha Tin.

Protesters planned to hold simultaneous rallies across different districts in Hong Kong, starting from 1:30pm.

As of 3pm, police fired tear gas near Lung Cheung Road in Wong Tai Sin, as well as near Yuen Wo Road in Sha Tin.

Sha Tin saw protesters throw petrol bombs and bricks, as police responded with tear gas.

In light of Tuesday’s planned protests, the metro system was put on lockdown. As of lunchtime, MTR station closures included Mong Kok, East Tsim Sha Tsui, Tsuen Wan, Tai Wo Hau, Kwai Hing, Kwai Fong, Sham Shui Po, Prince Edward, Yau Ma Tei, Sai Ying Pun, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Diamond Hill, Wong Tai Sin, Sha Tin, Che Kung Temple, Tsuen Wan West, AsiaWorld-Expo and Tuen Mun.

Light rail and Airport Express services are also restricted.

Speaking before the Hong Kong Island march, veteran Labour Party politician Lee Cheuk-yan said that the protest was to mourn “70 years of suppression” at the hands of the Chinese regime.

“We are mourning those who sacrificed for democracy in China,” Lee said.

“In 70 years of Communist Party rule, there are lots of sacrifices, human rights abuses, and the [suppression] of the rights of people in Hong Kong and China.”

“We also condemn the fact that the Hong Kong government, together with the Chinese government, deny the people of Hong Kong the right to democracy.”

Lee also called for the vindication of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre and the end of one-party rule in mainland China. During the march, he also called for a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of Chinese rule.

However, crowds of black-clad protesters did not always follow the lead of the veteran pan-democrats, with some opting to chant the familiar slogans such as “Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our time.”

A protester surnamed Wong said that it was important to take to the streets on October 1 as a show of defiance to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“Xi wants the world to think everyone in China loves him. A lot of people here feel the opposite,” he told HKFP. He also wore a Guy Fawkes mask – a protest icon made popular in the dystopian film V for Vendetta.

Rain, an 18-year-old university student, told HKFP that she didn’t want the local protest movement to lose steam, and that she wanted to come out to insist on her freedom of assembly.

“The police are putting a curfew on Hong Kong, making people scared to come out,” she said. “We need to show that we will not give up on our five demands.”

During the march, protesters targeted billboards and posters celebrating National Day, often vandalising them with spray paint.

Similar to the “anti-totalitarianism” march on Sunday, the Hong Kong island protests also saw vandalism against properties owned by food and catering firm Maxim’s, including local branches of Starbucks Coffee

Since June, large-scale peaceful protests against a bill that would have enabled extraditions to China have evolved into sometimes violent displays of dissent over Beijing’s encroachment, democracy and alleged police brutality.

Though the bill has been withdrawn, demonstrators are demanding a fully independent probe into police behaviour, amnesty for those arrested, universal suffrage and a halt to the characterisation of protests as “riots.”

Check out my other miniature railway pics on Flickr:

This railway was opened in May 1911 by local postman Griffith Llewelyn. It was known simply as Llewelyn's Miniature Railway but most of the finance had been provided by 4 local businessmen including Southport dentist Prosper Ladmore.

The first loco on the line was a Bassett Lowke 'Class 10' No.18 'George the Fifth' but this was sold a couple of years later to the Rhyl Miniature Railway and replaced by a larger 'Class 20' from Bassett Lowke No.22 'Prince of Wales'. In 1923 this was joined by another 'Class 20' No. 21 'Prince Edward of Wales' which came from the Fairbourne Railway.

These two locos continued to run at Southport until the late-1960s and were renamed on a regular basis, sometimes carrying two names at the same time! (one on each side). Eventually they settled down to permanent names - 'Prince of Wales' became 'Princess Elizabeth' and 'Prince Edward of Wales' became 'King George'.

At the end of 1933 the line was placed into receivership and was taken over by local engineer Harry Barlow who had already been involved with the line for several years.

It prospered under Barlow's control and in the late-1940s he extended the track and started building a fleet of new diesel-electric locos. In 1950 he built a new train for Southport Pier ('The Silver Belle') and the following year he built and operated the Festival of Britain railway at Battersea Park in London.

Barlow retired at the end of 1968 and sold the railway for £20,000 to a couple of local business owners. The two steam locos were not included and were later sold separately - 'King George' was auctioned at Christies in May 1969 for £950.

The railway at Southport was sold in 2001 and again in 2016 and continues in operation today and still uses some of the locos and carriages built by Barlow in the 1950s and 1960s. It is now the oldest continuously operated miniature railway in the world.

What happened to the steam locos? 'King George' ended up at the Whorlton Lido Railway in Co Durham where it operated for many years before being sold into private ownership where it survives today.

'Princess Elizabeth' was acquired by Bill McAlpine and went to Steamtown Railway Museum in Carnforth where it ran for 20-odd years. In 1983 it made a brief return to Southport to appear in a gala weekend. In 2000 the entire railway at Carnforth was sold to Hollywood movie director Francis Ford Coppola. 'Princess Elizabeth' now resides in working order on his California estate alongside the original Southport loco No, 18 'George the Fifth' which was acquired from Carnforth at the same time.

I know I'm not the only one who looks at themself while working out. They have mirrors in the gym for a reason.

It's a Christmas wreath, however it was seen on a rural walk away from any housing, at Easter time, so a bit of a mystery how it came to be there.

Haven't had a chance to get out too much in the past few months so I took a few while we had some good weather this weekend that I'll be posting here and there. Trying to expand my "subjects".

I had this beautiful paper cut out created by Elle for our Wedding Anniversary.

It is the final line from a reading from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin that was read by my gorgeous bridesmaid at our wedding.

It reads “and when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.”

I love that I met Elle through flickr and now have one of her wonderful creations on my dressing table.

Please...View On Black.

Quote from Wikipedia "Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by Antony Gormley.

Now permanently erected on Crosby Beach, England, it was due to be moved to New York in November 2006, but there was a controversial proposal to retain the work at Crosby. It was stated in the local paper, the Crosby Herald, that they may stay for a decade, but at a meeting on 7 March 2007, Sefton Council accepted proposals that would allow the sculptures to be kept permanently at Crosby Beach"

There are 100 of these iron figures over a 3 Km stretch of beach.

This is one of the posters that I've been working on for the Full Circle Farm groundbreaking celebration today. The image is mine, from a recent hike with the scoobies, and the text is a quote from Richard Louv.

In a final shameless plug, I'm really hoping to see a lot of flickrites out at our groundbreaking TODAY - it's going to be a lot of fun, with free food, great music, and activities and games for kids of all ages (and did I mention free food? ;-)...and when else are you going to be able to see the Mayor of Sunnyvale plant a plum tree?

Anyone who hasn't heard about this (and I've been yammering about it forever, I know!) we're starting a non-profit, organic, educational farm on 11 acres of middle-school playing fields in the middle of Silicon Valley, and it's gonna be awesome! You can find out more here.

Long Tailed Tits, doing a bit of scouting...

At the SouthBank Centre. This day I was going back home crossing the river and all the sudden I heard some band performing live under the waterloo bridge, at the skating area. It was the Hadouken! playing for BBC Switch!

Sweet!!
