OUT TO PASTURE

“..she began to stand around the gate and expect things. What things? She didn't know exactly. Her breath was gusty and short. She knew things that nobody ever told her. For instance, the words of the trees and the wind. .. She knew the world was a stallion rolling in the blue pasture of ether. She knew that God tore down the old world every evening and built a new one by sun-up. It was wonderful to see it take form with the sun and emerge from the gray dust of its making. ”

Sunday traffic to and from Sydney CBD. I had to crop severely from the bottom of the shot as street furniture intruded and spoiled the look of the shot. No other way to deal with it.

I tend to avoid photography on blue-sky days, so to shake myself out of that I went looking for strongly backlit subjects on just such a day. A tree leaning over the Eno River.

P.S. I had thought up this shoot concept the day before Mrs Thatcher died ..so in no way are we being disrespectful to the " Iron lady "

This is Cassie trying to understand chess. It's not at all what I had in mind but she wasn't very co-operative and to be honest, it was too hot to try anything else. So I just went with this. Pretty bad. Again. But nevermind.

I've got a thing for cars.

Old or new, it doesn't really matter to me as long as it's got some sort of character. I have a little fondness for old, used cars - there's a kind of modern anthropology about riding around in a car that's carried so many other drivers and passengers before me. What faded note or forgotten cassette tape will I find in the glove box? What did they listen to on the radio? Where did they go on Friday night?

I'd seen this old Herbie a few times on the way home from our happy hour spot, Jax. Each time I passed, I'd slow down a little, stare out my window, and imagine myself in that cute little bug. I thought about the guy or girl who had loved it and revved the engine a little at traffic lights. I'd think about how if the price was right, I'd pick it up - just for goofing around on the weekend.

I go through this a lot - I know I can scrape together $1500 for that old beater that would just be the coolest toy for the summer.

After eyeing it for a month or so, I finally told Allan that I wanted to take a look at it - if it was in running shape I'd buy it and throw a cheap, loud stereo in it and love it all summer long. Allan's owned an old Beetle himself, and I think seeing the flicker of excitement in my eyes sort of rekindled his need to tinker. I could tell the idea piqued his interest, too.

We pulled over, and I tried to stifle the hop in my step as I got out of the car. Never let the salesman see how bad you want it.

I looked Herbie over, and disappointedly noticed all the rusted out pitholes, the completely destroyed interior and a list of other things I'm not equipped to fix. Allan flatly objected: "Twenty-six hundred dollars? This isn't worth $500."

Sadly, I knew Allan was right.

So, I just contented myself to come back and take a few pictures and leave the rest of it to my imagination.

A night walk with my mate at ethero this evening. Bit too much wind and light pollution for my liking but my orbs are getting better. Purple and green gels on my tool. cool.
