A splash of nondescript white slime mold on a rotting log is, upon closer inspection, the intricate and coral-like Ceratiomyxa porioides.

How to make it

Multiple exposure composite of a delivery man vcrossing the street, registered with a subject-centered reference frame, then combined for a subtractive filter Harris shutter effect.
Details
This modified Harris Shutter Effect (HSE) image of emphasizes differences between three sequential photos while turning static features black. The moving subject introduced background registration shift between successive images. Warping to align the walker caused his relatively stable upper body to be dark while other objects became colorful.

I found a nifty leaf left over from autumn for something fragile. I thought to use a fishy image on a can of sea salt but that wasn't working. How about the salt itself? It comes from the sea, a fishy place, and is always used when we prepare fish. Perhaps that is too much of a stretch for the judges...
Utata's Big summer project 2014 invites us to take photos with a mobile device (phone, tablet). My interpretation is to do more with less, along the lines of DigitalRev's Pro photographer, Cheap camera challenge. This day I had a 2 MP cell phone camera prone to blowing highlights. This image has a fuzzy, Ortonish effect generated by shooting through a gauzy curtain, attempting to mitigate the poor detail problem.
Gouache and charcoal with touches of colour on paper
Following my trip to Aix en Provence last month (February 2010). Have made a series of charcoal/ink and gouache studies after a number of Cezanne's paintings. I have not paid note of the colour of these works, which would be a study in itself, rather I've concentrated on the dynamic surfaces and forms. at present I'm working on a series of landscape paintings and hope to incorporate some of these ideas into my own work.
Throughout my life I have made copies after paintings and find they are a great way to stimulate one's own imaginative life and creativity. Once recorded in a digital way further work is also possible.

Technical Trivia
Three frames taken hand-held were registered before abstracting red, green, and blue channels from sequential images. Slow shutter speed (1/15 s) was used to enhance blur in nearby vehicles. The color layers were recombined to generate this image, selecting red for the farthest (rear) bus, blue for the middle, and green for the foreground bus. Color enhancement involved several steps outlined in (Harris shutter effect) Grizzly Classic hurdler.

Harris shutter effect view of the mail delivery truck and clouds on a windy day. The Harris shutter effect combines red, green, and blue (filtered) images to generate a composite color image. Things that move between exposures appear as colored ghosts against the static background.

Technical trivia
The image was shot against the sun, for brighter clouds and sky, which drives the foreground into shadow.
The cloud spacing is uneven because unequal time elapsed between exposures.
Trees don't align because of camera and tree movement between exposures.

The Tamagawa University Taiko drum and dance corps performed for Sakura Sunday 2012 at Fairmount park in Philadelphia, PA. The audience was dominated by amateur photographers, as recalled by these six images.

Black level enhancement

- Composite with original using soft light transformation at 50% opacity (note: order matters).
Observation
This approach also modifies colors in a pleasing (to me) way. Interestingly, photos not available for public viewing are given much higher 'interestingness' rank than comparable public ones with hundreds of views.

Details
The goal of this series of images was to seek interesting photos from a non-optimal location (too far away, partially obscured view) using sub-optimal equipment (a slow camera with a dim lens). The fastest aperture, lowest useful ISO and low shutter speed were used to maximize color information in the RAW file.
This group concentrates on the reflections seen in the windows behind the performers. The perspective is lower than what was seen directly and gives a different view of the drumming style and stance. Early evening outside light was bright, allowing the background to show through the image. Later, the outside was lit either by moonlight or dim artificial lighting (with a blue cast) and did not disappear completely. Reflections are apparent from the interior and exterior panes of glass.
Technical details
Photographed in available light. Raw files were generally exposed for foreground elements, rendering the reflections 2-3 stops underexposed. Aggressive processing (Adobe Lightroom) involved increasing exposure 3-5 stops, adjusting highlights and shadows, then using the 'curves' tool to darken the black edge of the spectrum. Desaturating blue reduced the distracting effect of night-time exterior lighting. Aggressive noise reduction (Lightroom, Noiseware) was necessary.
Thursday morning began rainy and dreary. A camera wrapped in a plastic bag provided a different vantage. Selective blur, achieved by moving camera, impacts near objects more than far.

Trichromy exposure: three B+W negatives were exposed through red, green, and blue color filters then combined to give a color image from Fomapan B&W film.
I was curious how bokeh elements and the Harris shutter effect would go together. The fence and foreground is in the shadow of a tree, where gaps in the leaves dance around between exposures, giving a rainbow. The background shows fewer highlights because lighting was relatively constant and details were poorly resolved.

I stumbled upon the 5K run moments before it began and couldn't choose a better vantage. This Harris shutter effect image shows the pack moments after the start, following a serpentine path up a short hill.
This installation was a wreck, giving the notion I could add action to the scene.

Utata Thursday Walk #395
The exercise challenges one to make something interesting from things nearby. In my case, this means finding some way to beautify or hide a monotonous apartment complex and a flat, empty sky.
Solution:
Focus low to eliminate as much sky as possible.
Use slow shutter speed, large aperture, camera close to the ground and move towards the subject. This motion makes a far stationary subject imperceptably larger while close elements blur. This poor "man's dolly shot" gives a kinetic feel to foreground elements while directing attention to the central area of greatest sharpness. The effect is similar to a zoom blur (poor man's zoom blur?) but can be accomplished when auto focus can't be disabled.
Exposure bonus: blowing out the highlights weakened distracting background elements, including the apartment and colorful foliage that is in the wrong place.

The annual maple syrup festival, recently renamed the sapsucker festival, was held March 1, 2014 at the Audubon sanctuary. Owls were on display for educational purposes.

The Tamagawa University Taiko drum and dance corps performed for Sakura Sunday 2012 at Fairmount park in Philadelphia, PA. There was a sizable crowd, and almost every image showed the milling crowd. These six images try to capture troupe members in action.

Utata's Thursday walk invites us to reexamine our world and photograph the things that are around us. The Audubon sanctuary is frequently my daily walk. Today i decided to find a different perspective - the nearly dry stream bed beside the decaying spring house. A short climb up the edge of the structure gave this view of the stairs and crumbling masonry.
I spent the morning at the automobile repair shop. The proprietor has a remarkable collection accumulated from toy shows, in days before the internet.

The beach was clearly closed when they arrived, placing bags beside a similar sign near the unmanned lifeguard lookout.

Achille Empéraire was an artist who Cezanne painted in one of his early works. I based this head on a drawing by Cezanne.
Achille Emperaire was born of diminutive stature and a hunchback, born in Aix-en-Provence in 1829.
His friend Paul Cézanne once said, 'Well, he didn't make it. Still, he was a lot more of a painter than all those dripping with medals and honours.'.
Emperaire took drawing lessons in Aix from 1844 to 1856, whilst Cézanne only started attending the school in 1858. Therefore the two men only met in Paris in 1861, at the Académie Suisse. I've yet to see any of his paintings so can't comment on him.
This is part of a series looking at other artists, in particular Paul Cezanne.
It is impossible to think of the history of modern painting without the contribution of Paul Cezanne. Over these past five days we visited Aix en Provence to experience firsthand the places and subjects from which some of his most memorable works were painted. There is a very well developed tourist trail in Aix highlighting some of the most significant places in his life. I was most interested in those that bore a direct relation to certain paintings rather than places such as the school he attended or where his mother is buried . Our trip to the foot of Mount Ste Victoire was a great moment. I tried to record some of these sensations in a series of photographs and also some drawings made in Aix. This series links in well with some of my recent sets on art history and particularly French Impressionism and C19 painting. Aix is a charming city with many fine buildings, but it was perhaps the colours and feel of the place that impressed me most. Alison took a number of these photographs for our diary, this was our anniversary holiday.

History
In the early 19th century the Wetherill lead mine in Shannonville, PA (later renamed Audubon in honor of a famous former resident) provided lead for the production of paint. By the 1840s additional copper mining efforts opened a total of nine shafts including the New Perkiomen Mine, Whim Shaft, and the Ecton Mine. These veins were so promising that copper miners were imported from Cornwall, England to support the effort. Production diminished during the following decade culminating in the failure of the enterprise before the Civil War. All that remains above ground are scattered foundations, the smokestack from a facility that pumped water out of the mines, and a curious set of rails over the mine run stream.

Compositional note:
Here I combined an unflattering under-the-chin image with a blank school wall, giving it brick texture. The intent was of a statue collapsed on its side. The composition is similar to A walk in my imagination in using a broad, neutral element of one image to frame/texture an element in the other.
Motivation:
Practicing double exposures for Utata's Iron Photographer 216. I discovered one of my cameras has an in-camera double exposure mode (SCN: multiple exposure) and I'm learning how to use it.
IP 216 compositional elements include:
1 - a body part (chin, neck)
2 - something from nature (tree)
3 - double exposure (in camera)
Technical trivia:
I was not paying attention and a child wandered into the frame. I cloned hair over the face for anonymity.
Thoughts on the XZ-1 SCN: multiple exposure mode
PROS:

Hugh is 94 and still draws and paints, this is my recent portrait of him finished three days ago. This photo was taken under electric light so the colours are rather harsh.
POST SCRIPT
Hugh died last month aftre a full and long life, he never lived to see the finished painting we were intending to take it to him. It now hangs in St Luke's Church Oxford where he was a faithful member for many years, close to the place where he sat.

The Walker art center exhibit "Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc, 1960s–1980s" was crowded for the "free first Saturday" event. I imagined moving people and changing video images on free hanging screens might make an interesting composite.

For this project I warped/scaled the images to maximize bus congruency, allowing the background to lose registration. This is the "static bus" counterpart to the "static background" version
