I did a little drawing recently, Paint. I decided to enlarge it, and translate it from pencil to thread. It’s wonderful to work in bright colours with abandon.
Why does this garage have a chimney? Is there a fire place or hearth, perhaps left from the horse and buggy days when college students might pay to live there? Could it be merely an outdoor grill protected from the elements?
The desaturated grungy look was chosen to highlight the garage while reducing background distractions.

The Masonic temple in Atchison, KS was open for viewing one day in July. The main chamber has several stained glass windows and free standing Masonic themed pieces. The windows are not visible from outside nor are they lighted naturally due to protective exterior metal blinds, installed to protect them from breaking in high wind. This stained glass window was back lit with incandescent lights and front lit with fluorescent.

Some sections of the line were removed when the bridges they used were demolished. Here is one lonely stretch leading out of town.

Utata Thursday Walk #396
A gray, cloudy day was still nice for a walk through Pawlings farm at Valley Forge National Park. A chain link fence surrounds the historical structures because they are unstable. The wall on the far side of the barn (hidden by the door) is bulging outward and likely will collapse without a major reconstruction effort. The nearby remnants of the charred mansion have lost a chimney in recent years, and that crushed a porch.
The Independence day parade in Hamilton, NY. One youngster finally put on a sun hat and my camera's auto focus was drawn to the shadow.
Utica's Munson Williams Proctor art institute hosts an annual art festival which includes the Big Ol' Steamrollin' print invitational.

The image was cropped from a larger scene with an uninteresting foreground element.
A toy camera effect was constructed in Lightroom using this article as a guide. Graduated filters reduced sharpness and darkened each edge before mild vignetting was applied to unify them. Faded film look was generated with the curves tool by decreasing blue levels and increasing red then shifting the white balance for warmer colors.

The goal of this series of images was to seek interesting photos from a non-optimal location (too far away, partially obscured view) using sub-optimal equipment (a slow camera with a dim lens). The fastest aperture, lowest useful ISO and low shutter speed were used to maximize color information in the RAW file.
This group concentrates on the reflections seen in the windows behind the performers. The perspective is lower than what was seen directly and gives a different view of the drumming style and stance. Early evening outside light was bright, allowing the background to show through the image. Later, the outside was lit either by moonlight or dim artificial lighting (with a blue cast) and did not disappear completely. Reflections are apparent from the interior and exterior panes of glass.
Technical details
Photographed in available light. Raw files were generally exposed for foreground elements, rendering the reflections 2-3 stops underexposed. Aggressive processing (Adobe Lightroom) involved increasing exposure 3-5 stops, adjusting highlights and shadows, then using the 'curves' tool to darken the black edge of the spectrum. Desaturating blue reduced the distracting effect of night-time exterior lighting. Aggressive noise reduction (Lightroom, Noiseware) was necessary.

After 40 years, or so, the Flameburger in Little Canada will close this location and move next door in the coming weeks. Someone wanted the land enough to buy and refurbish the adjacent building for them.

The foundation of a long gone building is adjacent to the rail path, and meters from the remains of a mine shaft.
History
In the early 19th century the Wetherill lead mine in Shannonville, PA (later renamed Audubon in honor of a famous former resident) provided lead for the production of paint. By the 1840s additional copper mining efforts opened a total of nine shafts including the New Perkiomen Mine, Whim Shaft, and the Ecton Mine. These veins were so promising that copper miners were imported from Cornwall, England to support the effort. Production diminished during the following decade culminating in the failure of the enterprise before the Civil War. All that remains above ground are scattered foundations, the smokestack from a facility that pumped water out of the mines, and a curious set of rails over the mine run stream.

Utata Weekend Project: (Nov 15th to Nov 29th) Leaves
Using only the tone adjustments in Lightroom gave either detail in the surface of the moon or a notion of the wispy clouds nearby - but not both. I would rotate this counter-clockwise and crop to make it more dramatic, but my inner Neil Degrasse Tyson would feel guilty about showing the moon in the wrong orientation.
Why is it orange? The white moon actually has a spectrum very similar to the sun, but it is less bright. When the slight overexposure is reduced in Lightroom, the blown-out moon turns orange. This is probably because the moon was low in the sky and has the same explanation as for the sun appearing red at dawn and dusk: light travelling from the source (moon) to your eye passes through a thicker layer of air than when overhead and much of the blue light is scattered before it reaches you.

Crown-tipped coral fungus, aka Artomyces pyxidatus or Clavicorona pyxidata, is distinctive for the branched tips giving a crowned appearance.
How to make it: Two images taken with the cha-cha method (moving camera) were aligned and the gif was generated in stereophotomaker.

The Tamagawa University Taiko drum and dance corps performed for Sakura Sunday 2012 at Fairmount park in Philadelphia, PA. There was a sizable crowd, and almost every image showed the milling crowd. These six images try to capture troupe members in action.

Processing
Correct lens distortion (Olympus Master) then use Noise Ninja to clean up images.

Black level enhancement
- Generate a copy
- Use 'curves' tool to set bottom 10% of colors to black (HSV color space, Picture Window Pro)
- Composite with original using soft light transformation at 50% opacity (note: order matters).
Observation
This approach also modifies colors in a pleasing (to me) way. Interestingly, photos not available for public viewing are given much higher 'interestingness' rank than comparable public ones with hundreds of views.

Composite images with a moving subject reference frame
I was moving out of my apartment and noticed that light through the window made interesting overlapping shadows. My shadow almost seems to have a hole in it.

The Harris shutter effect, done digitally, combines color layers from three different photographs. Things that move between exposures appear as colored ghosts. Images were taken hand held then registered in Picture Window Pro to compensate for camera movements.

2012 Amelia Earhart Festival, Atchison, Kansas
This is an attempt to deal with diverse lighting conditions while maintaining a realistic appearance. Otherwise the composition would be refined by cropping and straightening.
Single RAW processing notes:
1. manually set white balance to 4000K
2. Generate 3 exposures (+1.5ev, 0.0, -1.5ev)
3. Correct lens distortion (Olympus Viewer 2)
4. HDR recombination (SNS-HDR lite)
5. Noise reduction (Noiseware Pro)
Details
This modified Harris Shutter Effect (HSE) image of emphasizes differences between three sequential photos while turning static features black. A moving camera (me, walking) introduced parallax between successive images. Warping to align the statue on the left caused other features to distort.

To achieve snapshot aesthetic faults I took my camera and object along to the grocery store, then gave myself two minutes to create and shoot several versions of something once there.

Composite images with a moving subject reference frame
Street artist David D. is one of the interesting fellows you might meet walking near the University of MN campus. He will ask you to sign his hat or coat, the finished product being his directed composition. At this moment he had created approximately 50 hats and had just finished his 79th coat.
Why Low Quality:
I often use an effectively JPG only camera to generate images with restricted color space (only 256) and little opportunity for exposure modification. This helps me to refine my sense of light and composition as I scroll through the often disappointingly blurred or mal-exposed results.

The Masonic temple in Atchison, KS was open for viewing one day in July. The archive room is decorated with heiroglyphs and a pharaonic motif, and the stone panel walls are engraved with the names of past masters. It has not been updated since 1984. This stained glass window was back lit with incandescent lights and front lit with fluorescent.
