A fungus, possibly Hericium coralloides, being overrun by a bright yellow slime mold, possibly Physarium polycephalum.
How to make it: Two images taken with the cha-cha method (moving camera) were aligned and the gif was generated in stereophotomaker. This is appended (below) to a larger JPG (above) to associate camera metadata that is lost in GIF format.

A plastic spiked caster cap is used to protect a carpet from damage by heavy furniture. This one, from the early 1960s, was inverted and found to have three optically distinct layers in each spike. Lighted from behind, each spike takes on the semblance of a Dalek.
Utata's Iron Photographer challenge 135 asked for compositions with:

Gouache and charcoal on paper
Following my trip to Aix en Provence last month (February 2010). Have made a series of charcoal/ink and gouache studies after a number of Cezanne's paintings. I have not paid note of the colour of these works, which would be a study in itself, rather I've concentrated on the dynamic surfaces and forms. at present I'm working on a series of landscape paintings and hope to incorporate some of these ideas into my own work.
Throughout my life I have made copies after paintings and find they are a great way to stimulate one's own imaginative life and creativity. Once recorded in a digital way further work is also possible.

The Harris shutter effect combines different R,G,B color layers from three successive shots to give colored ghosts to moving elements. This series of frames was taken hand-held and required alignment correction (I used Picturewindow pro). The colored artifacts were enhanced by desaturating the background, a procedure detailed in the first comment of this image.

Huntingdon, PA, has several restaurants catering to tastes across the spectrum: from distinctive diners, to chain restaurants, to taverns, and a couple of fine dining establishments. Several people lament the constancy of the offerings, seeking the most expensive restaurants and deeming the food better for its precious cost. While those places are distinctive in their neighborhood, they resemble countless similar restaurants across the country, using similar frozen ingredients from far away or out of season. What I found most rewarding was seeking 'common' food done well. After trying burgers at several diners, restaurants, and taverns I found the one at Boxers was my favorite. Flavorful, locally butchered meat cooked through yet remaining juicy and tender, offered in a hearty size bigger than the national chains but at a low, competitive price. The reasonable variety of beer they offer to accompany their creations only enhanced the experience. Something this greasy goes well with a nicely hoppy beer like Stone Brewery's Old Guardian 'barley wine' (when it is available on tap) or a wheat beer like Paulaner Hefe-Weizen.

I found an old die cast Hot Wheels car under the basement stair with a copyright date of 1969. I imagined some sort of sales pitch then realized this arrangement is shaped a bit like a star destroyer. I wonder if George Lucas was inspired by playing with his Father's ties?

Topaz Restyle blended the native color palette with one from a cross-processed Kodak Extachrome image I admire.
Intentionally overexposed with slow shutter speed to emphasize movement. A red 1 filter was used (hoping for partly cloudy skies).

Even disreputable Mafiosi carry a case with more care. Here it is used as a cane. Earlier, it was a bat (try to hit something tossed), a club (take a swing at his friend), and a stick (for knocking something out of a tree).
This image reminded me of the nebulously defined aesthetic of Felt Life before its founder and several admins abandoned the group and, in many cases, Flickr. There are now 332,000 images in the pool - many of them simply dumped. But if you head back to page 801 or earlier (circa 2007) you can have a glimpse of what was intended.
Why the Aviary enhancement?
The 'singe' filter saved me the effort of toying with the contrast to de-emphasize the background.
Lifetime Dream # 76 of my list of 155: I will make a manuscript book of all of the compositions that I have written. The book will be leather bound and embossed, and I will print the pages on acid free paper. I will have a full index at the front of the book, and emboss the page numbers in gold. The music will be on piano staves, including the lyrics on the staves. Each manuscript book will have at least 50 songs in the book.
I have so many original compositions in my head that I wouldn’t know where to begin to write them down… but I am going to start somewhere! I’ve always wanted to have them written out in a really nice format to be able to pass them on to my kids or open them up for a night of music now and again. It’s a long process and the software has its limitations, but I think it will look really good in the end, and I think it will be a great way to remember the musical muse that touches my world…

Details
The Tamagawa University Taiko drum and dance corps performed for Sakura Sunday 2012 at Fairmount park in Philadelphia, PA. There was a sizable crowd, and almost every image showed the milling crowd. These six images try to capture troupe members in action.

Black level enhancement
- Generate a copy
- Use 'curves' tool to set bottom 10% of colors to black (HSV color space, Picture Window Pro)
- Composite with original using soft light transformation at 50% opacity (note: order matters).
Observation
This approach also modifies colors in a pleasing (to me) way. Interestingly, photos not available for public viewing are given much higher 'interestingness' rank than comparable public ones with hundreds of views.
Cracked plaster on the ceiling adds texture around a light fixture in the old Gymnasium at Benedictine College.
I imagine this is how Theen might have framed it. Her stream is rich with wonderful vignettes and abstract compositions that make me want to experiment, too.

Integration signal to noise reduction (SNR) reinforces locally similar elements of the moving reference frame, sharpening them, while weakening dissimilar background elements.

History
During the American revolution the Pawlings farm was an important site adjacent to the Valley Forge encampment. Situated near one of two fords (Pawlings and Fatback) across the Schuylkill river, it provided important access to the site as well as an avenue for retreat through Shannonville in Providence township. The National Park Service discusses the importance of the Perkiomen Peninsula and the Pawling Farm on their website. The ford was not considered safe because a slight rise in river level made it dangerous or impassable. Pawling's was made more useful by a ferry which existed until 1806 or later. The first permanent bridge, an early chain suspension bridge, was constructed circa 1810 but destroyed by ice in 1820. Subsequent structures weren't as ambitious. By 1825 improvements to upstream locks and dams made the river passable by passenger boats from Reading down to Pawling's bridge. The 1830s saw expansion of the railroads. This 1837 bridge abutment is contemporaneous with growth of the Philadelphia & Reading railroad in the area where it connected with the Perkiomen railroad.

These morels, from the family morchellaceae, possibly yellow morels are only briefly seen in the spring. The twigs were removed in later images, but the light had changed - making this the most interesting despite the detritus.

My Thursday walk in Utica, NY led me past this gentleman pondering things on a doorstep.
He: Hey, Man! You a photographer?
Me: Not really - I don't make any money from it.

Technical trivia:
Contrast enhanced by palette replacement (Topaz Restyle, "flaxen blond" preset, 100% normal blending mode). This pulled subject details from the shadows while minimizing otherwise distracting details in the background. The yellow color cast helps it seem aged.
This is a small study on paper, based on a Cezanne still life. I drew this table when in Aix from another angle, but like this one much better. I've nit even attempted to be true to Cezanne's colours rather it is a take on him where I've used various shades to show the modeling of the figurine and fruit.

Utata's Iron Photographer challenge # 276 asks for compositions with:

I tried the cover from a spindle of blank CDs, because the textured top gave rings around the light source. The light was overexposed, so color was returned using topaz restyle (dark orange and sea preset, 40% normal blending mode)
Moochin Photoman (John Baucher) has fascinating shots of his world viewed through the viewfinder of another camera. This was in mind when I picked up the citrus juicer. View it large if you want to see the texture of the glass.
Utata Iron photographer #191 elements:
1 - a kitchen thing (glass citrus juicer, over the lens)
2 - something orange (an orange)
3 - shot at floor/ground level (floor is white; cabinets brown)
Five frames were averaged, to reduce noise, then the image was inverted and cropped to highlight glass defects and the orange. See the setup and a noise comparison in the comments. After this step, noise reduction (Noiseware) further cleaned the image.
Edit: I initially uploaded the greenish (fluorescent light) version. This was replaced with the light balanced version, but only after a few people had seen it.
The "tasty ingredients" for Utata's Iron Photographer challenge 296 are:

I found a deck of marked cards without the instruction booklet. I contemplated the many ways this deck was "gaffed" by its designer. Working with a youngster we quickly figured out the clock-face code for identifying the front of a card. The other obvious codes still defy meaning to us. This deck has no instructions listed on the 'net but there are many like it with undoubtedly similar mechanics. We wonder if we are identifying all of the features.
The ruins of the Pawling mansion, missing several walls, provide a surreal frame for the surroundings. I hope this doesn't alarm -masru-.
The earliest remaining part of the mansion was constructed in 1743 when this was a British colony. Jennifer Stark's thesis indicates the columns and Greek revival facade were added in 1845. The nearby barn was constructed in 1826 and also expanded to current size in 1845.
