These are not entirely finished, they were begun in Oxford during the snowy weather near to my home. rapidly painted oils on canvas.
Winter landscape has cropped up in a number of my paintings over the years, always a challenge not to fall into Christmas Card mode. these were mostly painted with a bristle brush and a knife.
I loved working on this piece! It was a commission for Kathy Metcalf, LCSW-C and it hangs in her office! Yay!! Kathy, thanks for the inspiration!!

Technical Trivia
Three frames taken hand-held were registered before abstracting red, green, and blue channels from sequential images. Slow shutter speed (1/15 s) was used to enhance blur in nearby vehicles. One frame (the green one) was slightly blurred by camera shake with little ill effect on overall clarity. The color layers recombined to generate this image. Color enhancement involved several steps outlined in (Harris shutter effect) Grizzly Classic hurdler.
Original artwork by Faith Honeybee Setley...this piece was gifted to a family that had purchased one of my paintings-tis a mixed media of their girls on 6 x 6 paper
With searing tears streaming down his cheeks
The lone gypsy prowled the field.
Are they tears of grief or rage?
None are willing to ask them.
Bottle in hand, they prowl the meadows
As emotions fill the night air.

The morning fog is so thick that, occasionally, you can see a cloud of droplets wafting through the air. This morning the sun cooperated, briefly giving backlit sunbeams.

Does it violate the spirit of "shoot low to the ground" if the image is then inverted for surreal effect?
Utata's Iron Photographer 43 asks for compositions containing certain elements:
1 - something made of wood (paneling, behind)
2 - some form of recreation (Ball, with a younger child)
3 - shot low to the ground (before flipping upside down)
The aging, wizened ball collected snow last night. Turned upside down and given a misleading title it loses obvious context, becoming surreal.
Monotropa Uniflora, also known as ghost plant, corpse plant, or indian pipe, is a parasitic herbaceous perennial plant. As a parasite it needs no chlorophyll, instead deriving necessary energy from its host - commonly mycorrhizal fungi.

This composite is from a sequence of photos taken with a moving subject and a stationary camera, registered on stationary background elements, then combined for a subtractive filter Harris shutter effect (HSE). Subsequent exposure adjustment of background elements (-2.7EV) was added in attempt to separate the subject in an otherwise flat image.
Details
This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Displaced background elements (versus the frame registered subject) are emphasized while indistinguishable features turn black.

A Niagara Falls tourist, wearing a blue 'Maid of the Mist' boat tour poncho, wanders past a flower I was imaging. The gaudy blue plastic seemed to work better after applying a "Holga Base" lightroom preset by an unknown creator. This version brought to mind the primary color schemes of early Star Trek episodes.
The breadbag trick worked to keep the camera dry but had one flaw: when the lens became cold, condensation on the inside of the filter was a problem.
Recent crosswalk repainting left abundant reflective grit dispersed across the road and sidewalk. The halos it generated were visible with the sun behind but not with the sun in front.

1. a matching pair of something (chains)
2. a bendable thing (vine)
3. asymmetrical
I spent an afternoon walk looking at the world through a camera I held by my ear, under my hat. I noticed this pattern for Utata's Iron Photographer challenge 289 and did a little work to optimize it. The elements of the challenge are:
1. Shot from underneath something (my hat)
2. A repeated pattern (pallets at a construction site)
3. Intense color (partial palette replacement, Topaz Restyle)

Utata's Iron Photographer challenge 252 asks for compositions with:
1 - something covering a hand (glove)
2 - something held in the covered hand (scouring powder)
3 - soft color (pastel-ish hue)
The description seemed to request a change in color range rather than intensity (e.g. desaturation) so the palette was modified by blending with a pastel-hued one (Topaz Restyle, "fading celeste air" preset, 50% normal blending mode).

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
“There are many threads connecting the series, the same mountain, for example, appears in the background of all the drawings. It represents both a high place and a hard place to reach, reflecting man's spiritual and physical struggle, an ever-present obstacle which needs to be overcome. Time is another recurring theme and is explored in a number of ways. The falling leaves mark the succession of the years and snails give a feeling of the slowness of time passing. Dandelion clocks express the ephemeral nature of life while clock faces indicate no time at all, perhaps a reference to eternity and the timeless drama we are all engaged in. The shack is a shelter from the storm of life. It's contents mirror the man's state of mind, it's starkness reflects the harsh reality of life in a land where the elements, like the passing years, show no mercy. It's ever changing layout gives the shack a dream-like feel and brings into question what's real and what is not.
What is the significance of the crucifix, the guns, the bottles of wine, the various books and the other elements that are featured? Like a Rorschach test, the story that we each read into these drawings will tell us as much about our own world view as it will enable us to glimpse Martin Beek's own vision portrayed in this work.” (From a review by I Clow)
White Christmas is like a Christmas Card image; I have been told that Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas on Waikiki Beach, when I drew this back in 1997 I was thinking about how I’d be like to be in America too, maybe even Waikiki; I wanted this not to necessarily be a comforting image of hearth and home but one of a bleak battle with the elements like other pictures such as Worst Of The Storm and A Cold Wild Wind . Incidentally the “Berlin" theme is carried throughout the series on the mailbox, it could allude to European settlement of north America or the once divided city. The hill/ cliff that appears in many of these drawings particularly “Lovers Leap “ and is an inversion of Mount Nebo Arkansas depicted in a number of my earlier works and first exhibited at 1984.
