I found this log bench in the village, which was clearly a very old piece which had been brought there from its original location. Carved on the sides is the same mata-mata pattern woven into the clothing I saw on display at City Hall. In this context, it's a little easier to see why it is called eye-like.
On August 6th, 2016, Grayslake residents Josh Schneider and Matt Kozak helped organize "Spikefest," the first ever Spikeball tournament in Grayslake. 43 teams came from as far as Mammoth Lakes, CA and as local as Grayslake, IL to raise money for “Oasis for Orphans” and compete for prizes that included gift certificates, Spikeball sets, and lots of other sponsored items. The winning team was “Origin Oblivion” from Chicago, IL consisting of Matthew Bohnen and Joey Hafertepe. At the time, Origin Oblivion was ranked 121st in the country with 38 tournament points. They are part of Origin Roundnet, which has teams ranked 1st, 6th, and 7th in the nation. 2nd place was "Tetelestai" from Chicago, IL with Logan Cornelius and Jesse Throw. Third was "Bromigo Spikes" from Chicago, IL with Trent Weller and Zac Nabhan. Fourth place was “Origin Rezurrection” from Mt. Prospect, IL with Tony Gottuso and Ben Smith.

À l’origine, monastère essentiellement composé d'un corps de ferme et de bâtiments pour abriter les moines, il est revendu en 1616. Une bâtisse de ce qui constitue le milieu du château actuel est alors construite et change plusieurs fois de propriétaire. Sous Louis XIV, le duc de la Rochefoucauld l'acquiert et la fait achever. La marquise de Pompadour l’achète en 1748 pour s'y détendre et surveiller la construction, à Meudon, de son château de Bellevue. Elle y ajoute de nouveaux embellissements et y accueille Louis XV.
En 1750, Jacques-Jérémie Roussel de Rocquencourt, fermier général, rachète le château qu'il agrandit en construisant le pavillon et l'aile nord, lui donnant ainsi sa configuration actuelle.
De 1776 à 1804, il est acheté par Louis Pierre Parat de Chalandray qui transforme les parterres à la française, en jardin à la française, avec l'aide du paysagiste Jean-Marie Morel.
Pour tout l'Ancien régime, nous avons une connaissance exacte de l'ameublement du château grâce aux inventaires après décès conservés au Minutier central de Paris.
Puis en 1804, il passe aux mains du vicomte Morel de Vindé. Ce dernier y reçoit Louis XVIII. Le château est alors connu pour posséder l'un des plus beaux troupeaux de mérinos de France.
En 1844, Jean-Pierre Pescatore, homme d'affaires luxembourgeois, l’acquiert. Il embellit le parc avec des paysagistes de renom, les frères Bulher. Il constitue l'allée que l'on peut encore admirer aujourd'hui dite "l'Allée des arbres étrangers". Il fait construire l'orangerie et trois serres pour sa collection de précieuses orchidées. Napoléon III et l'impératrice Eugénie de Montijo y sont reçus à deux reprises pour admirer cette collection unique en France. Passionné aussi par les chevaux, il fera construire un très grand manège couvert avec tribune et armatures en fer.
À sa mort en 1855, ne pouvant prouver leur mariage civil, sa veuve et ses héritiers font trancher le litige par les tribunaux, le château est remis aux héritiers mais la veuve en a l'usufruit à vie. Sa nièce Élisabeth Pescatore-Dutreux en hérite et continue l'embellissement du parc. Le château ne quitte plus alors la famille franco-luxembourgeoise Dutreux pendant un peu plus d'un siècle. En 1870, un obus tiré du Mont-Valérien tombe sur l'orangerie et en brise les vitrages ; les collections de végétaux exotiques périssent du froid rigoureux.
Du 11 au 18 mai 1940, la grande duchesse Charlotte de Luxembourg, fuyant l'occupation allemande, s'y réfugie quelques jours. Les Allemands occupent ensuite les lieux jusqu'en août 1944. À la Libération, quelques unités alliées s'installent successivement dans le parc et le château. Auguste et Suzanne Dutreux récupèrent tardivement leur propriété. Sans enfant, le couple souhaite que le château et son parc soient conservés dans leur intégralité, et le lègue, mais avec des conditions strictes d'utilisation, le 7 février 1951 : le légataire est le ministère français des Affaires étrangères dont le ministre est alors Robert Schuman, d'origine luxembourgeoise comme la famille Dutreux. Les conditions de la donation prévoient que « les lieux ne pourront être utilisés que par le ministre, sa famille, ses invités personnels ou officiels »
À l'été 1958, le président du Conseil Charles de Gaulle charge Michel Debré et Jean Mamert de finaliser la rédaction de l'avant-projet de constitution de la Ve République. Ils travaillent alors au texte jour et nuit, retirés dans le château de la Celle

"Of Norman origin, the church was built outside the city walls and originally endowed in the Abbey of Tewkesbury. In 1193 the rector was named Matthias Cumblaine.
"The mediaeval church had a nave with a single south aisle both above a crypt and a tower at the west end What can now be seen is mostly from a rebuild in the 18th century.
"Due to the growth of the parish it was suggested that another aisle be built but in 1763 the churchwardens reported that the south wall of the church had bulged outwards which 'they apprehend is occasioned by the weight and spreading of the roof but do not perceive any danger therefrom either to the fabric or the parishioners.
"However in August 1774, Thomas Paty, Bristol architect and builder, reported the church to be 'generally ruinous'. It was decided to demolish everything except for the tower which had been repaired in 1739 when a peal of bells had been installed.
"Paty's design in the early Gothic revival style, has been much criticised as 'not one of his best works for an imposing position'. It may also be that the donations towards the new building were not as generous as was hoped because in 1794 musical entertainments were being held there to raise funds. There was a further restoration in 1877 which cost £1,000
"A long-serving rector of the parish was Rev William.Knight whose incumbency lasted almost sixty years, resigning in 1875. When he died three years later he was buried in the crypt, which extended under the complete area of the church, so large numbers of his former parishioners were able to attend to pay their last respects.
"On October 30th 1881, according to the church census held that day, the number attending morning service was 494, evening service 420.
"The church, having already suffered in December 1940 bombing raids, was severely damaged by fire during the later ones of March 16th/17th 1941, leaving it roofless but repairable.
"In the 1980s Rev Desmond Tucker, stipendiary priest in charge had a good relationship with the pubs in the area. The Scotchman and his Pack regulars paid for a new church flagpole and he would also visit the Colston Arms meeting parishioners. So when the licensed premises were threatened with large rent rises he mentioned them in Sunday night prayers at the church.
"The church became voluntarily redundant in 1999 due to the dwindling congregation. Over recent years it has remained boarded up while sporadically ideas were put forward for an alternative use. Sadly none came to fruition and in October 2016 there was a devastating fire (enquiry to its cause now in progress) which destroyed most of the roof and interior woodwork."

The origins of the fair related to St Giles' Church at the north end of St Giles'. This was originally completed in 1120, but the church was not actually consecrated until 1200, by St Hugh of Lincoln, a Carthusian monk and bishop. As part of the commemoration of the consecration, St Giles' Fair was established. The fair continues to this day, nowadays as a funfair, held on the Monday and Tuesday after the Sunday following 1 September, which is St Giles' Day.Autumn 2012
In search of origins, the world’s underpinnings and the meaning of it all, Theater Hausruck (AT) has configured a surrealistic landscape painting as the set of a (pseudo) scientific, (theatrical-) archeological experiment in the forests of Upper Austria’s Hausruck region. Spun off from an operatic procession of pilgrims, Neuland proceeds along a mountain ridge to a research & education camp that’s been set up around a large, mysterious object. In amise-en-scène that fluctuates between reality and fiction, pilgrims, miners, musicians, locals and international scientists make their way.
