Order and Chance - The Unmaking of Time

Led by artist Sarah Sparkes

Monday 5 March – Saturday 31 March 2012,

This five-session course invites you to celebrate and engage with the diverse body of works and processes developed by the Italian artist Alighiero e Boetti. His extensive artistic practice is unique in the choice of materials, techniques and artistic strategies that he developed over the three decades of his professional life.

Time – its construction and de-construction – appeared as a recurring theme for Boetti. He was interested in the relationship between the conception of an idea and its execution, often directing others to make his artworks. Boetti considered everything in the world of potential use to the artist. The ephemera of the everyday were media through which he could explore his interest in the opposing relationship between order and chance, the individual and society, error and perfection.

Inspired by Boetti’s practice, this course is an opportunity to investigate and practically engage with the methods of working collaboratively and individually to create both intimate and large-scale works. Using everyday, easily accessible ephemera such as postcards, calendars, magazines, diaries, graph paper, maps and charts, we explore the representation of time and other systems of order and how to visually ‘unmake’ them.

This five-session course will conclude with a small exhibition of work on Saturday 31 March 2012, 16.00–17.00 in the Level 7 East Room at Tate Modern, open to friends and family.

^-^ Thank you very much Peggy for all these so beautiful handmade creations ^-^

This is a good picture of some of the "behind the scenes" work involved in ordering, wrapping and distributing the 431 dozen roses across east Jefferson County. Left to right: T'J. Plastow, Larry Howland, Frank Trafton. This team figured out the most efficient way to deliver each delivery team's roses, and ensured the each delivery driver had the types and qualtities or roses needed.

The Rotary Club of East Jefferson County sells roses each year to raise money for its scholarship and community grant programs. All money raised goes back into the community through these programs, and others.

The inspiration for the foundation of the Order are the Statutes which defined the secular Fraternal Society founded by King Károly Róbert of Hungary in 1326. Charity is an important part of the works of the Order, in addition, the Order's Foundation contributes funding in support of our wounded or fallen military personnel and their immediate families through the Military Family Resource Centres, as well as to other worthy causes such as the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Veterans & Community), 56th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, selected initiatives by Christian Churches in Canada and the USA, Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadet Corps.

Physical characteristics

The Black Stork Ciconia nigra is a large waterbird, in adult plumage glossy black in colour, with white underparts and red bill and legs. Non-breeding adult has plumage and bare parts duller. Juvenile all dingy brown with dull green bare parts.

Habitat

Found in variety of wetland sites: swamps, margins of rivers and lakes, lagoons, alkaline lakes and marine mudflats. Not usually in extensive open areas. It breeds in lowland moist forests by open waters, streams, pools or banks of rivers and lakes and it also breeds in mountainous regions. It usually nests in trees and sometimes rock outcrops (and caves) and it prefers to nest in areas not subject to human disturbance.

Other details

This stork inhabits a large part of Eurasia and also South Africa. Some birds of Southern Europe are sedentary, but most European populations winter in Sub-Saharan Africa. The total population of the European Union amounts to 400-470 breeding pairs. It has undergone a dramatic decrease between 1850 and 1950, and the species has disappeared from many regions. Since 1970 an increase has been noticed in several countries, and some regions of Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg have been colonised again. The population of the European Union represents only 4% of the total European population, however, and the global trends are unknown.

Feeding

Fish, frogs also amphibia, insects, snails, crabs and small reptiles, mammals and birds. Usually forages in shallow water, catching prey with a sharp stab of bill.

Breeding

Starts towards spring in Palearctic. N in Africa mostly in cool dry season. Solitary nester, in forest trees. Large stick nest, lined with moss, grass and leaves, cemented together with earth. 3-4 eggs, incubation 32-38 days. chicks have white down. Sexual maturity at 3 year old.

Migration

Migratory; partially resident population in Spain; S African birds disperse after breeding with local, mostly altitudinal movements. W Palearctic birds mostly skirt Mediterranean, though less so than C.coconia, because more capable of sustained flapping flight; few, if any, cross equator. Migration to and from Europe peaks in Mar/Apr and Sept, C. 2 weeks later than C.ciconia. Migration spread fairly evenly throughout day. In India mostly in small groups, often associating with C.episcopus. Reported foraging almost 10 km from nest in Poland.
