Physical characteristics
Head,neck and breast finely streaked grey brown. Supercilium and throat white. Upperparts black brown with white spots, underparts white. Very similar to T. ochropus, but paler, less bulky and longer-legged. Underwing much paler. Has longer neck and legs than more uniform T. hypoleucos. Female averages slightly larger. Non-breeding adult has browner and less spotted upperparts, breast washed grey and less streaked.
Habitat
Open swampy areas in boreal forest, especially scrubland between tundra and coniferous forest, peatlands, marshlands with deciduous bushes, and wet heathlands with scattered conifers. Outside breeding season, found in more open areas including open margins of inland fresh waters, muddy marsshes, grassy stream banks, sewage farms, wet paddyfields, tiny temporary pools and streams.
Other details
Tringa glareola is a widespread summer visitor to northern Europe, which accounts for less than half of its global breeding range. Its European breeding population is large (>350,000 pairs), but underwent a moderate decline between 1970-1990. Although the species was stable overall during 1990-2000—with key populations in Finland and Russia stable or fluctuating—its population has clearly not yet recovered to the level that preceded its decline. Consequently, it is evaluated as Depleted.
This wader inhabits peat bogs and wet grasslands in boreal and temperate regions of Eurasia, mainly between 50°N and 73°N. Its European populations are wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. The only populations of the European Union (12 Member States) are those of Scotland, Germany and Denmark, which are all definitely declining because of wetland reclamation. They are estimated at 50-100 breeding pairs, while the global European population can still be estimated at 350000 pairs, excluding the huge Russian population
Feeding
Diet includes chiefly aquatic insects, beetles, worms, spiders, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish, sometimes plant matter. Probes, pecks or sweeps bill through water, also able to catch flying insects from air. Feeds in shallow water or on mud. Often feeds singly, but also in pairs or scattered groups.
Breeding
Egg laying from May to June. Pairs bond Monogamous. Nest is a scrape lined with moss, stems and leaves, on ground among dense cover. Frequently in trees, in old nests of other species. 4 eggs are laid in a single brood, incubation 23 days, by both sexes. Chick pale buff to pale cream marked fuscous black and mottled greyish brown to cinnamon on upper back, with wide dark cap and white belly. Care of young only by male. Age of first breeding 1 year.
Migration
Migratory, wintering mainly in tropical and subtropical latitudes in Africa, across southern Asia to southern China, Philippines, and Indonesia, and in Australia. In west Palearctic, small numbers winter on Atlantic coast of Morocco, and a very few around Mediterranean and in Iraq. Adult movements away from European breeding areas begin late June, with juveniles following a month later. In tropical Africa, adults arrive August (a few in late July), juveniles in September, numbers increasing into October. Spring departures from winter quarters begin late March to early April, though some non-breeders summer there. Movement through Europe and Middle East April-May, with briefer pauses and no large concentrations. Breeding grounds reoccupied late April to late May, or in early June in northern Russia.

My BF and I went on a small quest Saturday: to compare LAs two famous French dip sandwiches. We started with lunch at Philippe's. We both order a beef French dipped sandwich, I ordered mine with Swiss cheese. Unlike what most are accustomed to, at Philippe's, they dip the bread into the jus when they make your sandwich instead of giving you a bowl of jus to dip your sandwich in. You can have it single-dipped (only one slice dipped), double-dipped (both pieces of bread dipped), or wet (just what you think it means).
The beef was well-seasoned and tasty, the crusty French roll stands up well to being dipped, doesn't become soggy or mushy, and the extra flavor added from dipping, yum! Adding to that, there's a bottle of Philippe's own hot mustard at each table, and a little squeeze of that on your sandwich is wonderful, that is, if you like spicy.
Philippe's is basically in Chinatown, it's crowded, and a popular destination for tourists and locals. The floor has sawdust on it, and the seating is communal. They've been at the same location since 1951, and is one of the few places where you can still find a bank of working pay phones.

Cupp Cave was once heralded as Belgian’s Best Kept Secret. Well, guess what? The secret’s out. From the US to Japan, his glitchy beats have stood out as some of the most innovative and rich amongst today’s electronic hip hop producers.
But he doesn’t stop at just making dope beats, he crafts universes, ocean deep and mountains high. He’s also proven his ability to wear as the weather and terrains demand while roaming through these sonic landscapes. As Kingfisherg he’s spent his time excavating golden sine waves from deep, lost caves. As Sineshine, he’s fished out a treasure trove of long-forgotten disco nuggets. As Cupp Cave, he serves up busted-gaming-console-and-dusted-broken-beat concentrate, filtered through a tub of radioactive waste to devastating effects. He also forms one half of Surfkill along with Dynooo.

Dem Hunger (UK).
This Anglo-Syrian cat has laid some impressive piss-tainted sweat drops down to cassette over the last few weeks. His ‘Caveman Smack’ release reeks of human corpses decaying on the floor with their eyes dangling out of their sockets. It’s all skulls bashed up in the river with the music sort of floating around, resonating of their jawbones. Dem Hunger is developping a science of flesh decay, and this is his latest experiment.

The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB) are a fraternal society devoted to charitable work within the local community and assisting other members in times of need. The RAOB’s first Lodge was established in 1822 and their traditions and regalia are based on the Masonic model but are not a Masonic society.
The RAOB motto is “Justice, Truth & Philanthropy” which is often seen on their medals and badges. Their aims are;
• Friendship
• Charitable works
• Social activity
• Mutual support
• Care.
This fine enamel badge would have been issued to a delegate at the RAOB’s 1954 Annual Meeting which took place at Rhyl in Wales. This badge depicts the pier and promenade at Rhyl. The pier was built in 1872 and closed in 1966, sadly, it was demolished in 1972.
The entire image; dragon, sail boat and panoramic view of Rhyl pier with promanade forms the pre-1967 municipal crest of Rhyl town.
