Over the past two years, USAID has sponsored internships for young Indonesian engineers at the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), a non-profit power system operator based in Sacramento. The internship was a follow-on activity of the USAID-funded Energy Utility Partnership Program (EUPP) agreed by CAISO, PLN and USAID, which promotes energy security, access to renewable power sources, and clean energy economies for USAID-assisted countries. The exchanges were designed to help Indonesian engineers learn new techniques from some of the most advanced companies in the field. It’s all part of USAID’s mission to build a self-reliant power sector that can effectively identify local challenges and address them with accountability and skill.

Bell Telephone Laboratories designed the modern telephone touchpad in the 1940 and ’50s, through scientific testing and analysis. The idea for the touchpad, which would go on to replace the older rotary dialing interface, was modeled on the handheld calculator. Designers measured user preference, error rates and dialing speed on a wide array of distinct keypad designs. In the end, the clear winner was the so-called “three-by-three plus one” design most users recognize today. (Graphic by The Bell System Technical Journal, July 1960)
