OPERATORS by TRANSFORMA (DE)

www.transforma.de

Operators is the culmination of a series of recent studio studies. These have been clustered together to form a stage of experimentation with the Operator at the center going about his work. Manipulating the surrounding elements, he creates acoustic and visual signatures which are spliced together to form a narrative. As images blend between artifice and the ‘reality break’, the resulting ‘film’ is juxtaposed against its very own ‘making of’.

In this live performance Transforma and sound artist Markus Hübner create a sound and video stream which treats video, original sound recordings and music in no hierarchical order.

I'm putting together a set of photos representing each of the people that operate an electrical power plant. Here we have an Outside Operator (me). The hand held device is for taking readings from equipment around the plant.

The safety glasses were very difficult to manage since they're so curved. They wrap around, so it's very difficult to manage the reflections. I found that I got the best results by moving the reflections to the top of the lenses.

Strobist info:

SB28 far off camera left with umbrella, directly to my side.

SB25 directly under camera

Sunpak 333 reflecting off concrete wall to camera right (the large reflection).

The camera is hanging from a vertical conduit from its gorillapod and triggered with an ebay remote shutter release in my pocket.

Robert Suber – Senior Sales Director, Intelsat and Glen Tindall – VP Asia Pacific, SES

These were all taken along the grain silo railway near Highway 55 in Minneapolis.

My first roll on my Moskva V. I had set up the camera to shoot 6x9 negatives but was advancing the film using the 6x6 setting. So a lot of overlap & double exposure here.

On the plus side, the camera seems technically sound. Focus appears to work. Lens seems good. I just need to practice with it more.

Oh, also my scanner can't handle 6x9 negatives. Which made this even weirder. In future I'll have to use a different scanner or stitch two scans together.

Shot on a Moskva 5 using very old T-Max 100. Pulled 1 stop due to age. Developed in Cinestill df96. Scanned using my Olympus OM-D E-M53 and a Takumar 50/4 macro.

Keeler, a former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District employee, served as a lock operator at Hales Bar from 1960 until the lock ended operations in 1968. He then worked at Nickajack Navigation Lock just downstream until his retirement in 1983. Hales Bar Dam opened in 1913 and the project was the first to provide hydropower in the world.
