This machine is very similar to a very large typewriter, only it is much more complex, and it has separate keys for all the different characters likely to be met with in printing ordinary work. The operator has the command of several alphabets at his fingertips. The keyboard was controlled by air pressure and when a key is tapped down it brings into operation valves and punches which perforate a paper ribbon (this in turn eventually controls the monotype caster machine which casts separate metal letters). At the end of the line the operator presses two justification keys which ensure that the line will be spaced out evenly and to the required measure (the justification keys are numbered and the operator presses the relevant keys after consulting a small drum of figure combinations in front of him, the drum actually indicating the figures to be depressed). A trained operator can mantain speeds of up to 10,000 ens per hour on straightforward text matter; the machine can also easily handle intricate tabular matter and other complex work. The paper produced by the monotype keyboard is used to program the composition caster.
