This was originally the site of the Mudcura Sanitarium, a world-famous spa that was opened in 1909 and operated until 1951.

Per MNOpedia, in 1951, the sanitarium was sold to the Black Franciscans, Order of Friars Minor Conventual, from Louisville, Kentucky. They named it Assumption Seminary and the site became linked with both the Colleges of St. Catherine and St. Thomas in St. Paul.

The Seminary remained in operation until 1970 and then sat vacant for many years, becoming a popular hangout for teens and other thrill seekers. The main building burned and was demolished in 1997.

Split Rock Lighthouse enshrouded in the mist from a storm that had just rolled in off of Lake Superior.

After a storm on Nov. 28, 1905 had damaged 29 ships, Congress authorized $70,000 to build a lighthouse and fog signal at Split Rock. The light station was completed in 1910.

The light was taken out of service in 1969 when modern navigation methods made it obsolete, but the 1,000 watt 3rd-order bivalve Fresnel lens beacon is lit once a year on November 10th to commemorate the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

I have made the beacon lighting ceremony the last two years, and I plan on going every year for as long as I can still make it. Yes, it's cold on the North Shore in November, but if you have a love of history, beauty, and a need for a sense of something unexplainable, the trip is well worth it!

The recent western fires have created a hazy horizon in Minneapolis, resulting in an interesting color for the rising full moon. This image was taken 2 minutes later than the previous one.

"Welcome to Lanesboro" sign on Fillmore County Roads 8 and 21, shortly before the road takes the plunge into the historic town of Lanesboro, Minnesota.

Lanesboro lies on the South Branch of the Root River in the cave-filled karst topography of Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota. The region is the part of Minnesota that the most recent glaciations did not reach, leaving it with geologic features that aren't found anywhere else in the state and the name, "the Driftless Area." The scenery in this unique area is spectacular.

Lanesboro, named after one of its founders, F. A. Lane, was platted in 1868 in a beautiful bluff-lined area in the Root River Valley. The town and the area around it were settled mainly by Norwegian immigrants who left their mark all over Fillmore County.

Slight wind

I wanted to try this again, taking into account what I learned from the first try, and it was a complete failure. Framing was better, but focus is worse and a lot more camera shake tonight.

I really need to try again, but next time maybe when it's not so darn cold!

I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.

I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,

but I always thought that I'd see you, one more time again.

I wanted to try this again, taking into account what I learned from the first try, and it was a complete failure. Framing was better, but focus is worse and a lot more camera shake tonight. I had a 35mm prime with me, so I thought I'd try that before I went with the wide lens...mostly because it had a polarizer and I was hoping to avoid some of the lens flares. I was able to clone them out this time, but still, I wouldn't say I liked the way this turned out.

State Line Sign on US 169 entering Minnesota from Iowa. This sign is in Elmore, Minnesota.

According to MNDOT:

"Sixteen of these state line markers still stand and have been determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Fourteen were constructed by the National Youth Administration (NYA) during the Depression Era between 1940 and 1942. One was constructed by the Works Project Administration (WPA) in 1942. Another was built by the Highway Department’s "Maintenance Labor" in 1943. Stone used in construction at each site was indigenous to the area."

I'm standing in the empty pit that was once the foundation of the Mudcura Sanitarium at Seminary Fen Scientific & Natural Area in Chanhassen/Chaska, Minnesota. Yes, the building is gone, but the pit is full of wildflowers. It kind of creeps me out to walk in it, though.

The cars give this one away. This postcard is from the 1960's and shows the building along the highway that was the gift shop and interpretive center at Gooseberry Falls State Park in Castle Danger, Minnesota (north of Two Harbors).

The CCC originally built this building as the "Falls View Refectory" but it eventually evolved. It wasn't far from the Upper Falls.

I seem to remember the building having some roof leakage issues in the late 1980's/early 1990's and they closed it. In 1996, a brand new Visitors Center opened closer to the Middle and Lower Falls.

The "Falls View" building is still there and may be being used for storage but the public can no longer go inside.

I went to college in Duluth, Minnesota at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD).

OK, so one December day, some of my roommates and I get a wild hare (or is that "hair?" You decide...) up our rear ends and decide to drive about 30 miles from Duluth up to Gooseberry Falls State Park. So, up we went, and I'm not sure, but I believe we got stuck on an unplowed road in the park.

In any event, we ended up staying overnight in the Campground Shelter. Luckily there was firewood and we knew how to light a fire. Also, luckily, the park ranger found us there in the morning. :-D
