Enjoying some lantern light and a campfire at the campground in Gooseberry Falls State Park.
The park is located in Castle Danger, Minnesota (north of Two Harbors) on Lake Superior's North Shore.
Lady Slipper Lodge (originally the Kitchen Shelter) was the first shelter built by the CCC in 1935 at Gooseberry Falls State Park.
It was built as an open shelter, but in 1939 three sides of the building were enclosed to protect against the cold Lake Superior breezes.
The park is located in Castle Danger, north of Two Harbors, Minnesota.
Interpretive Board near the beginning of the trail in the Lost Forty woods. The board tells the story of how this small forest of old-growth pines came to be.
This section of forest lies within the Chippewa National Forest near Bigfork, Minnesota. A Minnesota DNR Scientific and Natural Area, the 32 acre Lost Forty SNA, is also part of this beautiful site.
Due to a surveying error back in 1882, this 144 acre section was never logged. As a result, there are numerous 300-400 year old magnificent old-growth red and white pines in this special place.
The sight of these incredible trees isn't the only thing you experience here. The smell of this forest is unique. The sound is also unique. The breeze blowing through the crowns of these old pines make this piece of the north woods sing a totally different tune than most other sections of forest up here. You have to experience it to understand what I am saying.
For more information about the Lost Forty, go to the Chippewa National Forest's Lost Forty Website or the Minnesota DNR's Lost Forty SNA Website.

The CCC had a work camp here and their historic handiwork can be seen throughout the park.

Big Lake lies in the Superior National Forest along the Echo Trail, close to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
The owners of a resort on the lake, Big Lake Wilderness Lodge, rent out this and another island in Big Lake. They supply the camping gear, though you're welcome to bring your own, too. Every day they bring out ice, water and firewood, and change the porta-potty in the little outhouse they have on the island. It makes for an awesome week-long trip!
The upper falls is positioned just a few feet up stream from the lower falls.
Minneopa State park, established in 1905, is the third oldest state park in Minnesota after Itasca State Park and Interstate State Park. The name is derived from native american words meaning “water falling twice” which describes the two-tiered waterfall located within the park.

The first winter storm of the season has arrived in the Twin Cities. Here is the view shortly after the snow started in Prior Lake, MN where the forecast calls for 4 to 6 inches of snow.
During my visit to Big Woods State Park I walked downstream from Hidden Falls to see what might catch my eye. Not far from the falls I came upon this rock ledge overhang with a mini falls created by rain water following some drainage path or perhaps water from a natural spring. The water was dripping off the ledge and hitting layered shelves of a blue-grey rock which I found attractive.
It was intesting that to each side of the blue-grey rock the ledge was undercut to a greater degree. I wondered if it was indeed a spring and was somehow related to this vein of harder rock.

Concrete driveway that was one of the two driveways that met in front of Mudcura Sanitarium's main building. Mudcura, a world-famous spa, was opened in 1909 and operated until 1951.
Per MNOpedia, in 1951, the sanitarium was sold to the Black Franciscans, Order of Friars Minor Conventual, from Louisville, Kentucky. They named it Assumption Seminary and the site became linked with both the Colleges of St. Catherine and St. Thomas in St. Paul.
The Seminary remained in operation until 1970 and then sat vacant for many years, becoming a popular hangout for teens and other thrill seekers. The main building burned and was demolished in 1997.
The land is now home to a Minnesota DNR Scientific & Natural Area that protects the rare calcareous fen that is now the star of the show here. The main building burned and was demolished in 1997.

RPPC postcard, likely from the late 1930's, as the CCC Camp buildings are still in place.
The scene shows the Middle and Lower Falls at Gooseberry Falls State Park in Castle Danger, Minnesota (north of Two Harbors).
I liked the collection of leaves stuck on the rocks and the reflection of the falls in the still water of the stream.
The leaves were almost completely down today, during my visit to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, but the recent rains provided nice flow for the falls which I did not have during my visit in August. There were also lots of park visitors enjoying a mild but overcast late fall day.
My 50mm 1.4 Rokkor X lens was attached to the a7R2 when I captured this.

“The river flows at its own sweet will, but the flood is bound in the two banks. If it were not thus bound, its freedom would be wasted.”

The morning sun had risen to the point where it began to reach the gorge floor. I liked the way the rays cut through the leaf canopy and reflected off the water.
I was sure the heavy rains last week would produce good flow for the falls at Minneopa State park so I made a visit there yesterday morning. There were only a few leaves with color but I thought the early morning light in the gorge was excellent.

The lower falls is positioned to face the mid-morning sun once it is high enough for the light to clear the trees on the edge of the gorge. Just beyond the bridge is the upper falls.

The Twin Cities saw its first measurable snow of the season today. Savage picked up 3 inches of fluffy snow making for pretty pictures but a very slow commute.
The sun appears on a cold April day and makes mist as it warms up the lava flows on the Lake Superior shoreline at Cascade River State Park near Grand Marais, Minnesota.
This was one of my first, ever, 35mm slide photos. My dad had bought me a Pentax H2 35mm SLR camera for Christmas and in April, we went up to the North Shore so he could teach me how to use it.
I know it looks more like Ektachrome, but the original is a Kodachrome 25 slide. The 8x10 print that I scanned it from had faded some over the years, and I can't find the original slide, now.
I liked the way the unusually high flow over the falls provided plenty of froth for interesting swirls on the water.
After all of the rain we received this past week I thought I would visit the falls at Minneopa State park. I had never visited this park and I expected Minneopa Creek to be running high. I was hoping for some fall colors and to capture more dramatic images than my recent visit to the low flowing Hidden Falls. Only a few leaves with color but the early morning light in the gorge was excellent for a nice landscape captured with a longer shutter speed to add a silky nature to the froth.
