Every few years when I've learned more about digital photo editing I reprocess this one. It's one of my favorites, but it was taken with a 2 mp point-and-shoot camera. Needless to say, it has been put through the ringer quite a few times in the last 12 years. 😄

I wanted to show more of the details of the gorge. I loved the gorge wall and how deep the sandstone had been cut away by eons of water flow.

I was sure the heavy rains last week would produce good flow for the falls at Minneopa State park so I made a visit there this past weekend. There were only a few leaves with color but I thought the early morning light in the gorge was excellent.

Minneopa State park, established in 1905, is the third oldest state park in Minnesota after Itasca State Park and Interstate State Park. The name is derived from native american words meaning “water falling twice” which describes the two-tiered waterfall located within the park.

Why certainly - let's wear a dress to visit a state park in the north woods. Do you have high heels on, too, lady? :-D

I'm thinking 1940's or 1950's postcard showing the view of the highway bridge from the Upper Falls at Gooseberry Falls State Park in Castle Danger, Minnesota (north of Two Harbors).

Chippewa National Forest sign along Minnesota Highway 6 near Bigfork, Minnesota.

The Chippewa National Forest (originally the Minnesota National Forest) was established in 1908. It was the first National Forest to be established east of the Mississippi River.

Often overshadowed by its younger but mighty sibling, the Superior National Forest (est. 1909), the Chippewa has more lakes and wetlands than any of the other U.S. National Forests.

For more information, go to the U.S. Forest Service's Chippewa National Forest web page.

Inside Lady Slipper Lodge (originally the Kitchen Shelter) at Gooseberry Falls State Park. It was built in 1935 and added on to in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

Notice the huge fireplace on the left. This building, Lakeview Shelter and the Campground Shelter all have these big beasts. They are beautiful examples of CCC masonry.

I believe that this building is used for presentations and may also be the park "church" on Sundays.

After a few days of subzero windchills, the Mississippi River was turned into a shiny mirror of ice next to the Stone Arch Bridge in downtown Minneapolis.

The recent western fires have created a hazy horizon in Minneapolis, resulting in an interesting color for the rising full moon.

Tonight was one of those nights where everyone pulls over to watch the sunset.

Historic U.S. 169 bridge as it crosses the flooded Minnesota River, silhouetted against a multi-colored sky in Shakopee, Minnesota.

I've been aiming to get a shot like this for years (as many others have, I imagine). Finally, I found the right combination of an aspen grove with thick enough tree growth, the right timing on the color, and blue sky (shooting this against an overcast sky just doesn't work, too much contrast). Also, shooting full frame (so my 17mm lens is actually that) helps capture way more of the canopy. In either case, it was awesome to experience this beauty in person!

This image of Hidden Falls in Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is a bit wider than the first image I previously posted. The first image had a tight composition due to some children playing in the water at the time. After the family had left I was able to get this image which I actually like a bit more.

Mallard reflecting in the mill pond on the Minnesota River in Shakopee, Minnesota.

This pond was once part of the large New Deal-era Mill Pond Roadside Parking Area (RPA), built in 1941 by the National Youth Administration (NYA) in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Highways (MHD).

The wayside occupied both sides of Minnesota Hwy 101 (now Scott County Hwy 101), with the two sides being connected by a stone-veneered culvert. The north side included the mill pond, a picnic area, walking trails and a gravel parking area. The south side had a parking area, trails, and a picnic area. All of these features were constructed by the NYA.

The original plans called for a historical plaque marking the foundation of the 1847 Pond Mission, but it was crossed out. A plaque on a boulder was eventually built in 1954 by the MHD near the Pond Mission foundation.

All that is left of the Mill Pond RPA is this mill pond and possibly some of the trails on the north side, and the Pond Mission Historical Marker and foundation on the south side. The rest of the original site has been engulfed by highway expansion and Shakopee Memorial Park.

This barn has been slowly sinking into the adjacent pond for years. The autumn colors and calm water provided an excellent "golden hour" opportunity to capture it's beauty one more time.

Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis is one of the most picturesque lakes in the entire Twin Cities area. This panorama of fall color reflections demonstrates why.

The Minneapolis skyline is beautifully reflected in the calm waters of the Mississippi on a cold January evening. The Broadway bridge in NE Minneapolis is one of the best vantage points in town for capturing the city in all its glory.

Enjoy a safe and fun #Halloween weekend ahead.

Trying to get a shot of the lava flow and CCC-built Guardrail, and my little camping buddy photobombed me!

Oh well, it's hard to get good help these days, so she's still with me. :-D

Morning on Duluth Harbor

"CCC Boys" camp interpretive sign at the Upper Falls overlook at Gooseberry Falls State Park. The camp was located to the left of the Upper Falls.

The "CCC Boys" basically developed this whole park, and many more parks, waysides, roads and other things that we have taken for granted for many years.

Whether on a computer or a phone, you should be able to enlarge this image to a point where you can read what the sign says. I have kept this one at its full resolution.

Camping at Gooseberry Falls State Park in mid-May. This was day one of four, and it was the last day with no rain. We still had a great time anyway.

The park is located in Castle Danger, Minnesota (north of Two Harbors) on Lake Superior's North Shore.
