Minnehaha Falls

Minneapolis, MN

February 19, 2005

Minnehaha Falls sits near the boarder of MInneapolis and St. Paul. It is fed from the Minnehaha Creek to the west and flows into the Mississippi River to the East. This is perhaps Minneapolis’s best urban park.

Every winter the creek and falls freeze solid. This shot is taken from behind the frozen falls. While technically not legal to be back there, and somewhat dangerous as the massive sheets of ice can break loose and come crashing down at any time, the view from behind the falls is a unique look at the marvels of Mother Nature.

If you enjoy this shot, look through the rest of my pictures in this series and you’ll see the magnificent colors that come alive in the ice, and some pretty cool and unique views of water frozen in motion.

In my hometown for the weekend. working on long exposures.

Giant poplar tree growing in Seminary Fen Scientific & Natural Area in Chanhassen/Chaska, Minnesota.

This was originally the site of the Mudcura Sanitarium, a world-famous spa that was opened in 1909 and operated until 1951.

Per MNOpedia, in 1951, the sanitarium was sold to the Black Franciscans, Order of Friars Minor Conventual, from Louisville, Kentucky. They named it Assumption Seminary and the site became linked with both the Colleges of St. Catherine and St. Thomas in St. Paul.

The Seminary remained in operation until 1970 and then sat vacant for many years, becoming a popular hangout for teens and other thrill seekers. The main building burned and was demolished in 1997.

The land is now home to a Minnesota DNR Scientific & Natural Area that protects the rare calcareous fen that is now the star of the show here.

The dying sun left just enough magenta in the sky to enhance the Lowry Bridge and its reflection. It was lit red, white, and blue to celebrate Worker Memorial Day - April 28.

The St. Croix river is overflowing in downtown Stillwater. The bridge is nearly touching the surface of the water.

Look what I spotted today at Fort Snelling State Park! I've been seeing photos of this deer all over social media. I went to Fort Snelling in hopes of finding, and photographing this deer. Within ten minutes of walking around, we crossed paths. This young white-tailed deer has a genetic abnormality called Piebaldism. Which is what causes the white markings on it's face/body.

Looking through a window at the inside of the crumbling 3/2 bar that was once a vibrant part of Chub Lake Resort along State Hwy 1 between Isabella and Ely, Minnesota. Locals and tourists who have been around long enough remember this bar as a busy little tavern that they'd stop at on the way to or from Ely. The resort, which still has several cabins standing, has been here since the 1920's and was owned for years by Bob and Lois Anderson.

A family from the Princeton, MN area bought it in 1973. I haven't been able to find out when or why it eventually closed. My guess is that it was in the late 70's or sometime in the 80's when a lot of mom and pop places were lost to the changing economy and rising gas prices.

Word has it that a couple from the Twin Cities own it now and that they wanted to restore the place, but found out that the cost would be prohibitive. A major issue is that the lodge was made of poplar logs and some of the bottom ones are rotten. Meanwhile, harsh weather and vandals continue to take their toll. #ONLYinMN

Huge Norway (Red) Pine, probably hundreds of years old, growing along the road to Thistledew Lake south of MN Hwy 1 near Togo, Minnesota.

I don't remember for sure if this is two or three shots spliced together in an attempt to show how tall this tree is. #Minnesota #MN #UpNorth #ONLYinMN #Thistledew
