One of the concrete gun emplacements that held 155mm guns before D-Day. At the centre is the gun pin that allowed the gun to pivot.

Pointe du Hoc is a 100 ft (30 m) cliff overlooking the English Channel on the coast of Normandy. During the Second World War it was the highest point between Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east so the German army fortified the area with concrete casemates and gun pits. On D-Day (6 June 1944) the United States Army Ranger Assault Group assaulted and captured Pointe du Hoc after scaling the cliffs, a scene immortalised in the 1962 film The Longest Day. At the end of the two-day assault, the initial Ranger landing force of over 225 was reduced to only around 90 fighting men.

Recipes for happiness from the Director of the Ornithology of Happiness project Research Institute of Cardboardia

Colleagues! Comrades! Friends! This is the director of the Laboratory of Ornithology at the Cardboardia Research Institute. I appeal to all employees of the Laboratory, all its interns and volunteers, as well as to all those who are not indifferent to the scientific progress of the state of Cardboardia.

Recipes for happiness from the Director of the Ornithology of Happiness project Research Institute of Cardboardia.

Our field trip to Kirov, the New Year's capital of Russia in 2025, was recently completed. I am ready to state with full responsibility that all the tasks set have been achieved. We continued our long-standing observations of changes in the level of happiness of the population depending on its geographical location and the time of the year. We have successfully and fruitfully conducted training and retraining of local personnel for potential further participation in the programs of our Research Institute (as well as several permanent residence visas in Cardboardia). Our main task has also been completed — the Vyatka-Kirov Bird of Happiness has been discovered, examined and studied. All received materials will be transferred to the main department of the Research Institute for further work.

I can't help but share some more specific research results. It turned out that the following actions and factors significantly increase the level of happiness in human blood:

• A sharp smile from ear to ear. However, if you have weak blood vessels, you should not use it more than 2-3 times a day.;

• the presence of a headdress on the head (regardless of its appearance and the time of day and year outside the window);

• voluntary and compulsory gymnastics;

At the same time, to our surprise, the following factors negatively affect the level of happiness (both in the short and long term):

• Regular queuing;

• moving up the career ladder too fast;

• a person's lack of sense of rhythm;

According to the tradition of our Research Institute, the Laboratory ended with a large-scale urban march. Several hundred citizens and visitors from other cities who came to Kirov temporarily became naturalists (and at the same time naturalists). The prototype of the Bird of Happiness created by us during the Laboratory has become not only the spiritual, but also the material center of the procession. All the participants, armed with all kinds of objects created by them during our Open Workshops, formed the mass, the core of the procession. Its main purpose was to test in practice (it is important — outdoors) the ability of Happiness to concentrate in various manifestations of human culture: in color, sound, matter.

One can already admit that the whole procession was one big scientific experiment. In addition to the above, it confirmed another of our hypotheses — happiness can be transmitted through physical contact. All the participants of the march were in close physical proximity to each other, which does not happen so often in everyday life. Therefore, today's advice from scientists is to stay with your friends and family more often, hug and do not be afraid of live contact with people. Infection with a bad mood through touching has not yet been proven. In the near future, the Publishing House of Cardboardia, I hope, will release a specialized brochure "Happiness at home and in reality" on how to stay happy under any circumstances.

Concluding my report, I would like to thank the Tyran of Cardboardia for such an attentive and reverent attitude towards science, its development and, most importantly, its people. Hooray, friends! Your I. K

Friends of the Green Line & Park People hosted a walking tour of the Green Line in the hydro corridor just north of Dupont Street between Dovercourt Road and Christie Street. Attendees learned about the dream of a butterfly highway, how the Green Line could connect to other active transportation corridors, what local community groups are doing to animate their parks, and how the Dupont Employment Lands study could tie into a future vision for the Green Line.

Part of our assignment was to roam the halls of ACAD and shoot stuff demonstrating some principles of composition. I wanted to show some repeating elements here, and also the use of lines to direct your attention. Unfortunately, the lines lead your eye right out of the frame and not to something of interest.

Kotov has recently become the inaugural director of the new Center for Complex Particle Systems (COMPASS). One of the major technological goals of COMPASS is to design materials that are more than the sum of their parts and can be rapidly translated to manufacturing using 3D printing. Kotov pioneered complex nanomaterials for energy, healthcare and automotive industries.

Monticello was the primary plantation of Thomas Jefferson, a Founding Father, author of the Declaration of Independence, and the third president of the United States. Jefferson began designing Monticello after inheriting land from his father at the age of 14, but its construction date is typically identified as 1772. Located in Albemarle County just outside Charlottesville in the Piedmont region, the plantation was originally 5,000 acres, with Jefferson using the forced labor of slaves for extensive cultivation of tobacco and mixed crops (later shifting from tobacco cultivation to wheat in response to changing markets). Due to its architectural and historic significance, the property was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. In 1987, Monticello and the nearby University of Virginia, also designed by Jefferson, were jointly designated as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site. The United States nickel has featured a depiction of Monticello on its reverse since 1938 (except for 2004-05).

Jefferson designed the main house using neoclassical design principles pioneered by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and reworking the design through much of his presidency to include design elements popular in late 18th-century Europe and integrating numerous ideas of his own. Situated on the summit of an 850 foot-high peak in the Southwest Mountains south of the Rivanna Gap, the name Monticello derives from Italian meaning "little mountain." Along a prominent lane adjacent to the house, Mulberry Row, the plantation came to include numerous outbuildings for specialized functions, e.g., a nailery; quarters for slaves who worked in the home; gardens for flowers, produce, and Jefferson's experiments in plant breeding—along with tobacco fields and mixed crops. Cabins for slaves who worked in the fields were farther from the mansion.

At Jefferson's direction, he was buried on the grounds, in an area now designated as the Monticello Cemetery. The cemetery is owned by the Monticello Association, a society of his descendants through Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson. After Jefferson's death, his daughter Martha Jefferson Randolph, apart from the small family graveyard, sold Monticello for $7,500. In 1834, it was bought by Uriah P. Levy, a commodore in the U.S. Navy, for $2,500, who admired Jefferson and spent his own money to preserve the property. His nephew Jefferson Monroe Levy took over the property in 1879; he also invested considerable money to restore and preserve it. In 1923, Monroe Levy sold it for $500,000 to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (TJF), which operates it as a house museum and educational institution.

The church was built in the 5th Century and dedicated to St. Peter. It assumed the name of St. Francis after 1261 when it was entrusted to the Franciscan order. The building was restored and rebuilt several times in the 10th, 11th, 16th and 18th centuries. It was restored to its original form in 1921 on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri’s death whose funeral was held here in September 1321. The interior of three naves, is divided by two lines of 12 columns of Greek marble. The original floor is about four meters under the present floor due to the sinking of the ground. In the 15th Century the present floor and the base of the columns (with the exception of the last two near the apse) were elevated 1.7 meters bringing them to their present level.
