Status: Resident, numbers increase in September due to birds released for hunting.

Conservation Concern: Green-listed in Ireland. The European population is considered to be Secure.

Identification: A large game bird with long legs and long barred tail. Males and females are very different. The males are distinctive with a bottle green head, with red fleshy head sides. The white collar is only present on the male and may not be present if you happen to see the least common race of the two races present in Ireland. Males are reddish brown and have a very long tail, upperparts which are spotted white and finely marked underparts. Females are very different, they are buff- brown with angular spots on the flanks and fine angular markings on the upperparts, the long tail is a give away.

Similar Species: None in Ireland.

Call: Most often heard is the hoarse alarm call when the bird is flushed, which decreases in strength as the bird flies off.

Diet: Eats a variety of foods gleaned from the ground including grain, seeds, green shoots and invertebrates.

Breeding: Nests on the ground. An introduced species from Asia, first introduced in the 16th century. Two races have been introduced to Ireland, but the race from China with its white neck ring has dominated. A game bird, it is raised in large numbers and released into woodland to be shot soon afterwards. Many birds have dispersed far from their release sights and can be found in woodland, farmland, large gardens and parks, where they have become 'wild'. Likes dense cover and can flush up at the last moment when nearly under foot. Roosts in trees. Widespread in Ireland but scarce or absent from parts of the west coast.

Wintering: Some birds may move from higher altitudes, but generally resident.

Where to See: Not a difficult species to see. Often seen in fields along roads.

New house numbers from ArchitecturalNumbers.com (WestOn Letters). The numbers were designed by Richard Neutra in the 1940s and are a font called Ribbon. They are made of black-anodized cast aluminum, weight about 1 lb each, and are mounted on 1/2" spacers.

This part of our urban landscape fascinates me because it’s an underdocumented aspect of environmental “typography”. They aren’t printer’s fonts, but prefabricated letters used by architects & builders. Each product was made only within a specific era, giving a locale a sense of history, just as architecture can.

One way to trace the origins of prefab letters is through trade catalogs. I made an Internet Archive list: archive.org/details/@stewf/lists/1/prefab-architectural-l...

The digital scoreboard at the Chapel Lane ground of Barwick-in-Elmet Cricket Club. Captured during a Leeds & Wetherby League fixture against First Division rivals Sicklinghall. Barwick, who are batting, won by seven wickets. It was their second victory in four games at the start of the 2021 season.

Put in, Sicklinghall lost Matthew Hatherly, bowled by Robert Nicholls (1-24), to the first ball of the match. Fellow opener Richard Brooke (78) and Ben Williams (47) then added 76 for the second wicket. Brooke was dropped three times. Both Brooke and Williams were caught off poor shots before skipper Adam Ryszkowski (28), in at No 8, contributed important runs late on. James Todd (4-53) and Will Drake (3-35) shared the bulk of the wickets.

From 35-1 (James Ingram out for 22), James Watford (65) and Nicholls (25) put on 80 for the second Barwick wicket. Watford was bowled by Ryszkowski (1-37), whose pace occasionally extracted eye-opening bounce from a wicket that seemed to offer a bit of everything. A number of deliveries kept low. Gary Bettison (34 not out) and Cameron Hardy (21 not out) steered Barwick home in sensible fashion. Leo Challenger took 1-36.

This is a 9 and not a 99. On all 4 sides of this thing there was a 9.

History of irrational numbers Numbers appear like dancing letters to many students as they are not able to distinguish between different categories of numbers and get confused in understanding their concepts. Number family has numerous of siblings and one of them is irrational and Rational Numbers. You can define rational number as a nameable number, as we can name it in the whole numbers, fractions and mixed numbers. On the other side irrational number is one that can’t be expressed in simple fraction form. With the help of real life examples you can easily distinguish between different types of numbers.
