In the summer of 1914, the Canadian military leased enough land from the Tsuu T'ina Nation to establish a site for training soldiers who were to be assigned to fight during World War I. Some 45,000 men were trained at the military camp, making it the largest military training establishment in Canada during the war time. Army engineers mapped the area. Each unit established its identity within its prescribed area by using stones that were hauled in sacks from the river; soldiers hauled sacks of rocks more than 2 km (1.2 mi) during off-duty hours as part of their training program.

After their training was over, the battalions were assigned to regions abroad to fight in World War I. Soldiers who survived the war met at the park, till the 1960s, to carry out weeding operations and also to re-paint the stones of their battalion number which they had erected in the past. Eventually, the numbers were almost forgotten, overgrown by shrubs and grass. The stones were almost obscured till a local historian found them when planning for residential and retail development was underway. Over several years, cadets of the units, particularly the 157th Battalion stationed in Calgary pursued historical status for the site. The stones were safely stored while the area was developed, and then restored. Battalion Park officially opened on 3 November 1991.

Am I the only one who finds irony in the juxtaposition of the sign on the Target store and the battalion numbers on the hill above?

One of the vessels used in the Brew by Numbers brewery was built in 1970 by T Giusti and Son. That company was still trading in 2003, and were based at Kings Cross, N London - but seem no longer to exist.

This was the best location to signal back and forth with inmates of Alcatraz. Lenny "Long Shot" Gabortz kept his numbers racket thriving by using one of his guys on the outside. The actual mode of signaling was never discovered.

One can only speculate how many future fear-factors reside within this cluster of newborn spiders.

This video was shot in the field with an extended macro bellows at 3200 ISO, so the quality is a bit crappy.

It might be interesting to learn how many of these little guys and gals actually make it to adulthood and get big enough to scare Li'l Miss Muffet out of her britches.

...I guess we'll never know.
