The former Fleetwood radar training station served for decades as a base for coastal masters and crews to train in the latest radar technology.

Built in 1961, the Grade II Listed edifice stands next to the town's Victorian lighthouse near to Fleetwood Promenade, and is a single storey, oval building with a reinforced concrete, flat roof. Raised above the level of high tide, the old radar station also has framed timber windows, a timber floor and door, and can be accessed by steps from Fleetwood Promenade.

Historic England has praised its 'elegant, modern design' and highlighted that the two buildings show 'the history of communications side by side.' Similar accolades include a 1965 Civic Trust Commendation, which singled it out as a 'modest yet dramatic little building' and the art historian and architect, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, called it 'a cute little piece.'

The historic building was built by Lancashire County Council's architects in 1961, and it was transferred to Blackpool and the Fylde College in 1996 but is shortly to be assigned back to Lancashire County Council as the original leaseholder.

Some renovation is needed to restore the building to its former glory, and any future owner will be required to undertake such work and also apply to Wyre Borough Council to vary the covenant which stipulates its use as a Radar Instruction Centre. However, the building's iconic status and distinguished naval history have already sparked considerable interest locally.

County Councillor Alan Vincent, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for resources, HR and property, said: "This little building forms an historic and attractive feature, and taken with the historic 1840 lighthouse, forms a vital testimony to Fleetwood's distinguished naval past as well as showing the history of naval communications in our midst in Lancashire.

"We hope that by placing this iconic building up for auction, an essential part of our region's wonderful marine history can be preserved for the future, along with Lancashire's distinguished legacy of naval communications in times gone by.

The middle section of Liffey Falls in Northern Tasmania.

The Liffey River has three steps in a short section of its course running off the Great Western Tiers. These falls lie in a very attractive section of rainforest.

A massive flood in 2016 deposited the tree and other debris at the foot of this section. Unfortunately Tasmania does not have the 'disposable income' to spare to clean the rubbish up.

The lower section is the most dramatic but we didn't get there due to the heavens opening - it's hard to tell in the shot other than the wet rocks in the foreground but it was pouring at the time.

Went back to Mayo River State Park yesterday to scout out some Fall color. Might have been just a wee bit past peak, but still quite lovely! (This is the exact same location as my “Lushness” photo posted in August!)

Right down amongst the spray at Trial Harbour. Amazing geology on the west coast - these rocks bear witness to some major tectonic events in Tasmania's journey along with severe weathering in the recent era.

The leathery looking feature at front left is Bull Kelp (Durvillaea potatorum). Cast (washed ashore) Bull Kelp is harvested here and up the coast at Granville Harbour and also on King Island. The kelp is processed into all manner of substances used in medicine, foods, gardening/agriculture and livestock raising.

Valley of Fire State Park is not as well known as the bigger National Parks to the North and East in Utah and Arizona but it is only a 90 minute drive from Las Vegas and is well worth for its unique orange rock formations.

A tighter shot of Aldeyjarfoss waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót River, Northeast Iceland.

The falls can be reached just off the F26 (F842) 30k south of Goðafoss or on the less popular side (this shot) via a 30 min walk off the F843.

This frame has been in my to-do list for a long time but a confession - I had to replace the sky - the original was comprised of really dominating horizontal lines and was never going to work with the strong vertical elements in the rest of the frame... apologies for any offence caused :)

Kírkjufell under the Aurora Borealis, Snaefellsnes Peninsular, Iceland.

Could also be titled "The Bear Hung Over the Mountain"...

This two frame stitch taken under the same Northern Lights event as a previous post but later in the night. Kírkjufell is partially lit up by the sodium vapor lamps of Grundarfjörður town off to the right, behind me - hence the grungy brown colour of the mountain. There was also quite a deal of thin cloud about resulting in reduced contrast in some of the beams. Constellation of Ursa Major can be seen clearly in the sky above the mountain.

At the left is the location of the famous Kírkjufoss waterfall. Apparently there was a total scrum over there at the time with lots of rude photographers being not at all collegial.

I knew it would be a shambles so gave it a miss and shot this from just outside town. There was just one other 'tog there - a nice lady from Estonia who had escaped the brawl around at the waterfall. She said we had the best view anyway!

This is the view to the north east from the comms tower on Twelvetrees Range into the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. South West Tasmania.

On the skyline hard left is the northern end of The Spires being the White Pyramid and The Camel. Next is Mt Curly (slightly obscured) Pokana Peak (1127m) with Centre Star (943m) in the centre mist. The cat-ears of Bonds Craig (1260m), Reeds Peak in the cloud (1290m) (both of the Denison Range) with South Star at its foot.

Continuing, we next have the northern end of the Junction Range (right) meeting the southern end of the Pleiades Range behind the green Atkins Range right in front of it all.

That's enough local geography for one sitting and it's only a field of view around ~10.3°...

One more of my early attempts at photographing the Milky Way, taken in August 2018.

The photo has an obvious flaw: not much happens until the lights of the Benevolo Refuge and Le Refuge de Fond. I had scouted the area before coming to shoot at night but at the time I was still quite inexperienced and did not consider that in the dark many of the details of the terrain would be lost.

In the background, from left to right, the Roc Basegne, the Roc del Fond, the Punta Calabre and the Granta Parei (in my opinion one of the most beautiful mountains in the Aosta Valley).
