The noisy friarbird is a passerine bird of the honeyeater family Meliphagidae native to southern New Guinea and eastern Australia. It is one of several species known as friarbirds whose heads are bare of feathers. It is brown-grey in colour, with a prominent knob on its bare black-skinned head. Wikipedia

With the COVID-19 (coronavirus) now rampant here and in most countries I am spending all my time at home and fortunately have plenty of birds coming to visit due to our bird friendly and flower garden.
Would have missed this fellow if not for a group of people pointing and staring up into the tree. He was a beauty!

This set of butterflies paid a visit to the garden to enjoy the nectar of sedum. The texture adds an art-like quality to the photo and a hint of age.

I don't believe I'll ever get tired of shooting this bridge. On this particular November morning I spent several very satisfying hours doing so. I'm not a morning person, but if I can manage to get past the sleep-induced inertia and get my feet out from under the covers and onto the ground, I'm good to go :)
Hey, I have some news! For anyone interested, this past week's issue of Amateur Photographer Magazine has a photo of mine on the cover AND a feature article on my photography. If you follow me on FB or Instagram, you probably saw a link to the digital ($$) edition of the magazine. The link I posted here actually takes you to a free version of the article. It's not as pretty as the digital or print version because it's missing the print/digital layout, but all the text and the photos are there, and if you'd like to know a few of my techniques for capturing sharper images in-camera, you might want to check it out.

During the pandemic, we began taking regular drives to get out of the confines of our home and to discover parts of NC that we have not explored. We continue to enjoy those drives and took one yesterday. As luck would have it, the dot on the map we chose to investigate wasn't very exciting but the lunch spot we found for our picnic further up the road sat along this lovely creek. The tannins in the water made for pretty shadow play.

I just thought I'd show what I am able to get out of a dull cold day and a seemingly dull image. The left one was a Raw conversion in PS to get back the underexposed shadows. Then using different elements of Nik collection I am able to get to the righthand image. I first used Colour efex pro4 to increase the tonal range, then Viveza2 to pick out the individual centre elements to increase brightness, contrast, and structure enabling a focus on the field boundary and gate. I finished off by painting with Define2 to reduce some noise that had crept into the sky. I just love using the power of this software, its made a huge difference to the way I see an opportunity that I may otherwise pass by.

The tiny but very famous 'Black Church' of Búðakirkja, Búðir, Snæfellesnes. Iceland. The church was built around 1847 and is quite a feature on the internet.
There were a pair of Spanish newlyweds at the church having their wedding photos shot by a pro team - also Spanish. The party looked to have spent the best part of the day shooting at the location while Iceland's weather was being its normal self. The Bride must have been absolutely freezing... I cloned out the 'tog and the light-boy ;-)
Someone has suggested it looks like a scene from a Henry Ibsen play but I'm not sure which one.

Taken whilst out with my brother-in-law, Geoff Stephens. We were both out with our Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with EF mounts. Mine was fitted to my Sony a7c, using a Metabone adapter.
Taken handheld at 12800 ISO.
DXO PureRaw2 used prior to editing in Photoshop 2025, using Color Efex 5 from the Nik Collection.

7DWF Crazy Tuesday: Crazy and unique perspective
Ladybug enjoying the sunshine on my insect screen. So actually I'm the one behind bars.
I know that this is not a good shot from a technical point of view. The little guy was washing its face, and when I finally got a fairly sharp shot from a nice position, this one, it decided to move out of the frame. To add a kind of prison touch, and to balance the weird framing here, I added a heavy square vignette in Analog Efex.

Ich weiß, dass das eigentlich kein gutes Foto ist, aber ich dachte, es passt zum heutigen Crazy-Tuesday-Thema. Er saß relativ weit unten und als ich endlich die Fensterbank freigeräumt hatte, beschloss er, sich zu putzen und dann krabbelte er aus dem Bild ;-) Um den nicht so tollen Bildausschnitt etwas auszubalancieren und dem Foto einen gewissen "Gefängnis-Touch" zu verleihen, habe ich in Analog Efex eine rechteckige Vignette drübergelegt.
South Queensferry, Scotland
After the dismal bank holiday weather, Tuesday turned out to be rather better. The tide was on the turn but plenty of time to grab a few shots along the shoreline. It was a nice afternoon stroll along the promenade and cobbled streets of South Queensferry but not the best conditions for photography with the sun high in the sky, hence this B&W conversion via Nik software to bring out some definition and contrast.
Sights around the beautiful location of Homer, Alaska. Sitting at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula this spit of land enjoys views of mountains meeting the bay, abundant sea life, and soaring eagles above.
