22 Oct, 2011. Orientation Ceremony for the new batch of 2011 was held at Hajvery University (HU) on Wednesday, 12 Oct, 2011 to provide students of Business Management, Fashion Design, Pharmacy, Commerce, Engineering, Computer Sciences, Textile design & from Humanities with a smooth but exciting transition into the University life.
Orientation 2011 was an event designed to help first-year students explore all that awaits them at HU. It allows freshmen students to meet people, discover resources on campus, learn how to find their way around campus and have some fun too!
Orientation is more than about finding out University rules & regulations. It’s about our commitment to help you, as a new student, explore opportunities for involvement on campus and successfully connect to your new community. You’ll need assistance throughout the year, as your experiences and needs evolve. Our Orientation activities help new students with this transition, but we’ll be organizing events and activities throughout your first year.
We wish you all the best, and look forward to seeing you all on HU Campuses!

The pitter-patter of leaves is heard from all around. a squeaky noise, a solitaire, sounds off in the distance, and from above you you hear the 'chips' of many small birds. The wind blows, and the clouds move along, making trees hidden by fog so wet you feel it on your face. The wet fallen leaves shuffle as you walk onward, ducking under a myriad of hanging vines and epiphytes that sag from the branches above in the weight of the water. 'Chack-chack-chack-chack-chack!' a flock of parrots speeds by, and from the bushes you hear the bubbling song of a wood wren, heard, but not seen. In the distance, two whistles signify the presence of a trogon, and you walk on, regretting to leave this place, but eager to find a new batch of sounds, a little ways down the trail.

Caffenol is generally a one shot developer but I was too lazy to make up a new batch so I reused a batch from developing another roll (developer was <1hr old). The negative came out thinner than usual but I was still able to extract reasonable images.

I've ordered some Moo Mini Cards and I wrote a small article judging their quality and mentioning how the edges weren't cut as smoothly. Imagine my surprise when I got an E-Mail from Moo apologizing for the quality issues and informing me that they will send me another batch of my Moo Minicards to set it straight. Wow! Impressive customer service. I didn't even send them anything. I guess they are constantly scanning the interweb for comments on the quality of their products. Good job Moo!
Here is a comparison of the various cards I have.
Top: the worst card from the first batch.
Middle: the worst card from the new batch.
Bottom: the best card from the new batch.
Although there is still room for improvement, the quality of the new cards IS better. But more importantly, seeing how they handle quality problems, I will continue using Moo because now I know that they will act if other problems happen. And in print, other problems will ALWAYS happen.

Found Agfacolor slide. This is the start of a new batch of found slides. There is no date or description on any of them, however there was a piece of paper in the box with the handwritter note "School Trip to Charterhouse. About 1980". Just before I left for my walking tour in England (late April) I made a new batch of emulsion. Once I'd completed it, I used it to make a smaller batch of speed- and color-sensitized emulsion, as I wanted to really do that right for once, using everything I'd learned before. I very carefully made the batch, hovering over it to ensure the temps didn't get far out of range, mixed up fresh chemistry for the various sensitizers, being careful to correctly calculate the percentages and amounts needed, and letting the emulsion ripen a bit longer than usual. I managed to pour a handful of test plates and try them out before I left, and was very encouraged by what I saw. But I didn't have time to do it properly; I had another task (long story) that used up the plates without telling me a lot about them.
After a very busy May and early June, I am finally getting back to it. Yesterday I used the entire batch to pour about 14 4x5s (and one 5x7, just about, with the last dregs of the batch). Had other things to do today, but late in the afternoon I had a few minutes, so I went out in the backyard and used this torture test of a scene (open shade, "golden hour", mostly green foliage, very warm colors all round) to get a sense of the speed of this batch.
I guesstimated ISO 8 (being conservative), and assumed it would be either that, or slower, which has been a safe assumption in my experience. So I exposed the first section of plate at ISO 8, the second section at ISO 4, the third at ISO 2, and the last at ISO 1. I added a bit of extra exposure to each to account for the lack of blue light plus the warm, dark green subject mater.
Once I popped it into the developer, I discovered that the image came up so fast I had to pull it a bit early. With the developer I'm using at the moment (Xtol 1:1, as I had some on hand) I estimated about 7 minutes of processing time. I had to pull it at 5. And there is more than enough shadow detail even in the ISO 8 section. I'm pretty confident that this is more like ISO 12 and maybe even 25 in better light. Looking forward to trying out more plates this weekend to see.

It had to happen. Just as things were going so well with my Mothers Day orders (juggling 7 at one time!) I dropped a box on the floor. It wouldn't be so bad except I had made everything so exactly as to have nothing left over as I venture off on a family weekend away. Luckily I had enough time to whip up a new batch using some fondant leftover from another order and I have to say I don't think they look bad at all! Not bad for a rushed job anyway!

spring in the danish countryside has meant that a whole new flock of clarity birds has descended upon our little farmhouse in the country. i went out one morning and there they were, nesting happily in the troldehassel (a curly hazel) tree. some of them were dressed in vintage finery and many had sparkling eyes like swarovski crystals. and all of them sang their pretty danish names to me. it seems the entire flock were girls!

I learned to love Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches when the Navy stationed me in South Philadelphia. I liked them with fried onions and either provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz. It seems that there is a controversy over which is the authentic South Philly recipe. Some swear by Whiz and others believe the authentic sandwich uses provolone. So, here in Alaska I decided to do a taste test to see which I prefer. Tonight it is a “Whiz, wit.” That’s with fried onions and Cheez Whiz. Tomorrow it will be with provolone cheese.
Now, I know…you don’t need to tell me…I can’t make an authentic Philly Cheesesteak in Alaska. The common view is that it is impossible to get a true Philly steak sandwich outside of ….well….Philadelphia. Some would argue that you can’t find authentic anywhere but South Philly itself.
Given the limitation that I live in Alaska, I will do my best. I selected a nice French roll – the best I could find in Haines. Tonight I bought some thinly sliced roast beef, a white onion, and a jar of Cheez Whiz. I didn’t simmer the onions in fat….gasp…but used Coke Classic instead…double gasp! I learned this technique from the Reindeer Sausage guy who stationed his cart outside the Old Federal Courthouse in Anchorage. I was in line one day when he was cooking up a new batch of fried onions. Amazingly, he took out a Coke Classic and poured some into the frying pan as he was sautéing the onions. He said that the sugar caramelizes to give the onions a rich golden color and adds a nice sweet flavor. I have been doing this ever since.

When you get to the end of a beaker of emulsion in a coating session, the dregs at the bottom tend to have a lot of small bubbles, likely suffered from the indignity of stirring and pouring. This doesn't stop me from using those last bits because a) I'm cheap, b) I still learn things from the resulting plates, even if I wouldn't use it for anything important, and c) I'm cheap.
So...I had this plate. I wanted to get a feel for how my little Perken Son and Rayment "OPTIMUS" 5 1/4" lens would do with colorblind plates, so I made a little lens cap for it (no shutter) and did an exposure in my shop. The widest aperture (it has a built-in revolving disc that allows you to select from 4 waterhouse stops) appears to be on the order of f/10 so is a bit hard to focus and compose indoors, but I managed to get things more or less in focus.
Answer: well, early days yet, but I rather like its rendering, especially given that this is as "wide open" as it gets Planning to start a new batch of emulsion this weekend, so hope to try it outdoors with some of the other apertures to see how it does with better light, stopped down, and with fewer tiny bubbles (pace Don Ho).
Made a new batch this morning and left it out in the hot sun to steep. A combo of different teas and lemon. I will refrigerate it and have a huge container of delicious ice tea!
