Thundering through the vineyard in the town of Jonzac is IC 3830 Quimper - Bordeaux St. Jean, hauled by BB 67559 and BB 67441. The leading engine, in Fret livery, has been leased from SNCF Fret by Intercités, giving me a nice combination of Fret and Multiservices liveries. Jonzac, 06-08-2013.

In April 2012, I have started the project to scan the best photos in my personal archive, from the time I did not yet have a digital camera. Due to the fact that they are scanned images, the quality may be a bit poorer than what you are used to from me. Apart from that, I was younger then (I've started in 1998, when I was 13 years old), so composition and lighting may not be up to standards. Nonetheless, some documents are historic by now.
BB 26048, one of four (out of a class that is 234 units strong) to carry the Multiservice livery, is seen here passing Melun station on a EuroNight train from either Rome (train 226 «Palatino») or Venice (train 220 «Stendhal», or «Rialto»... the Italians can't seem to agree on the name of this train). As large delays (2-3 hours or more) were quite frequent on these trains, it is impossible for me in hindsight to check which one it was.
Note the sign that indicates where TGV trains are to stop. These were there specifically for the very odd pair of TGVs to Marseille starting not in Paris but in the suburb of Melun. It ran once a day on weekdays and was subsidised by the governments of the Yonne département and the Bourgogne region, and was created in 1996. It called at Sens and Laroche-Migennes before joining the high speed line at its kilometre 117 and then calling at Lyon Part-Dieu, Valence, Avignon and Marseille St. Charles. When the LGV Méditerranée was opened in 2001, the train used that line and replaced the stops at Valence and Avignon by their TGV station counterparts. In 2009, circulation outside of summer was cut back to twice a week, but in an effort to attract more passengers its starting point was placed in Fontainebleau, closer to Paris. Finally, in December 2011, the train was definitively cancelled because the public authorities mentioned above no longer wished to cover the losses incurred by running this service. Melun, May 2005.

In December 2005, the «Rhône-Océan» (Genève (CH) - ) Lyon - Quimper was rerouted on a big detour via Dijon, the Paris area and Les Aubrais-Orléans in order to run on electric lines only (at the same occassion, it lost its through coaches for Bordeaux, leaving Lyon-Bordeaux without an overnight connection). In December 2009, it was cancelled altogether.
In 2004, however, none of that was yet "à l'ordre du jour", and train 4548 «Rhône-Océan» from Genève to Quimper is patiently awaiting departure in the direction of Roanne, St. Germain des Fossés, Vierzon, St. Pierre des Corps, Angers, Nantes, and Quimper, having just swapped the electric loco for a couple of BB 67300 class diesels. The car transporters are for the Genève-Auray and Lyon-Auray services. At the back are the coaches to Bordeaux (as train 4586), separated from the train at Vierzon. Lyon-Perrache, August 2003.

Working with the Navy's Special Boat Team 22, the soldiers traveled by night upriver to a simulated village. A USAF AC-130 Spectre provided cover as the team moved in. Following an exchange of fire between themselves and the enemy, the team was then exfiltrated by the boat team and returned to base.

In the last year before Téoz, two Paris-bound trains next to each other in Brive-la-Gaillarde: on track D, behind BB 26055 in béton (i.e. concrete) livery is train 3650 having come all the way from Cerbère at the Spanish border, and to the right on track F, behind BB 26014 in Multiservice livery (but with a spare roof piece from a béton one) is another train of which I cannot retrieve the number, starting in Brive and calling at a lot more stations. Anno 2013, the train Cerbère-Paris Austerlitz has changed its time slot and hence its number: it is train 3630 nowadays. Note another Corail rake in a siding on the far right of the photo. An everyday image back then, rapidly getting rarer in France these days: a good old "Danseuse" (BB 8606) in Multiservices livery coupled to an RRR set, engaged on a regional train from Tarbes to Toulouse mid-afternoon. Nothing special at all, quite commonplace really...
But today, there are only 40 of the once 146 units of this class left, with many of them only performing shunting duties and "remontes". And RRR, too, is slowly but surely disappearing from the stage. Lannemezan, 18-04-2007.
This image can no longer be made in regular revenue service: SNCF loco BB 15021 has just placed itself at the head of Eurocity 66 «Maurice Ravel» München Hbf - Paris-Est in order to haul it to its final destination. To its right, one observes the future: Strasbourg became a full-fledged bastion of TGVs as little as one day later. Needless to say, this was the last EC 66 on this route. Strasbourg, 09-06-2007.

My first visit to France was in 1987 when, as a family, we ventured across the channel to the Poitou-Charentes region. It gave me my first taste of the SNCF, albeit mostly the diesels as in those days the area west of the main Tours - Bordeaux main line was devoid of wires.
Away from the juice, the big blue diesel was king. Largest contingent was the BB67000 series, which could be found just about everywhere. Over the years I've encountered these on all kinds of work, from double-heading heavy freights to propelling 4-coach push-pull local services. Over 400 were built making them as universal in France as the 47 was in the UK. 124 were of the original BB67000 version without train heat (they worked with steam heat boiler vans), 70 BB67300s (with ETH) and 232 of the later BB67400 (with improved bogies). In due course 20 of the BB67000s were fitted with ETH and joined the BB67300 class, while 80 of the remainder were fitted with TGV cab signalling for use on works trains and for thunderbird work on TGV lines (class BB67200). The latter seemed to live a bit of lazy life, languishing (usually in pairs) at locations close to the LGV routes.
The body design is yet another from the pen of Monsieur Arzens, and the characteristic arrow grilles were a feature of the type for most of their lives along with the blue and white colour scheme. In their later years, SNCF decided to repaint some in 'Multiservices' two-tone grey and red, or 'Fret' green and grey, a process that involved removing the grilles and leaving some rather odd shaped apertures in the sides. To me, they looked better like this, as Mr. Arzens intended. I admired their versatility and styling, but always found them a bit disappointing on the noise front as they rarely seemed to generate much above a burble. There was, however, a bigger version, the AIAAIA68000 (with Sulzer engine) or AIAAIA68500 (with AGO engine) - bigger, bulkier and a bit noisier, they were brilliant, but much less common.
This was the very first French diesel I ever saw. Arriving in La Rochelle, we stopped at the station and found Bordeaux' BB67408 ready to depart on a Nantes - Bordeaux train. Eleven years later I would ride behind this loco, double-heading with BB67402, to this very spot on a train from Nantes. The TGV Atlantique scheme later brought wires to this spot by electrifying the line from Poitiers.

I saw her coming across the square shortly before the International Pillow Fight Day event was about to begin at City Hall in Toronto. Her outfit was fabulous and her open smile and sparkling eyes captured my attention immediately. I asked if I could take a photo and she said “Sure.” Meet Lori.
I took a quick photo where she stood and then mentioned my 100 Strangers project to which she immediately agreed. As I mentioned in my previous submission (Teresa) taking effective photos in Nathan Phillips Square is a bit of a challenge because of the rather open square with little in the way of interesting backgrounds or protection from direct light. I asked her if we could walk a few steps to the side of the square even though I didn’t have a big plan on how to best set the photo up. I was counting on some kind of divine inspiration and as I “winged” it, Lori was thoughtful enough to remove her glasses which I thought had a stylish touch but would have reflected (see comment photo).
Just as I figured out an effective position for the photo, a group of fellows walked right behind Lori and set up camp for a nice long chat. I walked over and gestured for them to move to the side if possible and they did so. I joked to Lori that I’ve become bolder since starting my project and she seemed amused. I suppose “bold” for me doesn’t look all that bossy to others.
Photos taken, I walked with Lori as the event was about to begin on the other side of the square. I wanted to find out a little bit about her and exchange contact information. Lori is 29 and does youth work in a Community Health Centre (a comprehensive multiservice centre in a high-needs part of west Toronto). She runs a program for youth called TRIP which I looked up when I got home and discovered it is a harm reduction program for youth participating in the electronic music “Rave” scene. It is nonjudgmental and offers unbiased information about lowering risks associated with sex and drugs in a scene that is known to have plenty of both. We “connected” around the fact that I’m a retired Social Worker and a former coworker is employed at a Community Health Centre.
As I was struggling to get Lori’s email despite my note-taking cell phone going dead, followed by my pen not working (classic project mishaps) Lori gently reminded me she had to be aware of time because she was in charge of the big Pillow Fight event! I had no idea and was amazed at her generosity since she had given me a few very friendly minutes of her time when she had some serious responsibilities of which I had not been the least bit aware. See www.national-awareness-days.com/international-pillow-figh... and www.newmindspace.com/ for more information about International Pillow Fight Day. I found Lori to be a very relaxed and “grounded” individual and I’m sure she’s very good at what she does with youth. I sensed her calm and trust even in the short 4-5 minutes we spent together.
A few brief minutes later the whistle blew and the pillow fight erupted and I got a few photos of the pillow mayhem. It was all in good fun and people really had a blast swinging their pillows at each other.
I promised to send Lori her photos and we promised to link up by email for her to tell me a bit more about herself and her work. Thank you Lori for the chance to meet you and for participating in 100 Strangers on a busy day. You are #767 in Round 8 of my project. The pillow fight event was a big success and a lot of fun so you must be quite pleased.
Additional note: As if her outfit wasn't proof enough of Lori's great taste and sense of style, when I got home and edited the photos I realized she was carrying an Olympus camera which I hadn't noticed!
Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by the other photographers in our group at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page.

For more than four decades now, the branch line from Montréjeau-Gourdan-Polignan (on the Toulouse - Bayonne main line) to Luchon is served by just two pairs of trains per day (in summer and during week-ends, on other dates there's just one): a TER service from Toulouse and the overnight train from Paris Austerlitz, which is by the way precluded from local use between Toulouse and Luchon. It is this overnight train that we see here. Arriving shortly after 8 AM, the locomotive (in this case BB 8610 in 'Multiservice' livery) places itself at the other end of the three coaches, the driver and onboard crew of one go into 'repos hors domicile': mandatory rest until shortly before departure as train 3990 around 9.30 PM.
