BILOXI, MS - 2/20 Special Forces Group soldiers participate in a night assault exercise in Biloxi, MS Nov. 7, 2014 in support of Exercise Southern Strike 15 (SS15). Working with the Navy's Special Boat Team 22, the soldiers traveled by night upriver to a simulated village. A USAF AC-130 Spectre provided cover as the team moved in. Following an exchange of fire between themselves and the enemy, the team was then exfiltrated by the boat team and returned to base.

In April 2012, I have started the project to scan the best photos in my personal archive, from the time I did not yet have a digital camera. More 67400s. Not blue this time, but painted in the rather fetching 'Corail Plus'/Multiservices livery introduced in the late '90s.

In 1987, I went to Saintes and found a busy little place, with a thriving freight yard and a shunter busily moving wagons about the place. The old steam shed was in use as a diesel stabling point, with 65000s and X2200 railcars awaiting their next turn of duty. Today, the yard is empty of all but a handful of condemned wagons, but the stabling point is still busy, now with its own allocation of multiple units and rejoicing in the title of 'Technicentre Charentes-Perigord'.

And the long distance services (from Bordeaux to Nantes and beyond) are still loco hauled. Once they were in the hands of SNCF's massive CC72000 diesels, but they are now gone leaving the heaviest trains in the hands of pairs of 67400s. Some, I believe, bear the ridiculous 'En Voyage' livery, but when I called into Saintes I was lucky enough to catch this pair, looking smart and awaiting the right away to head north. Happy days.

Accident: 19800627185945ZW5N39.717E12.917G0H7.2E3

Cause of accident: Direct mid-air collision with an armed 527th TFTAS Northrop F5E Tiger II dogfighting @ 760 kn, scrambled in couple with another F5E from DCI in order to intercept and engage without notice the unarmed LARAF MiG23MS Flogger-E (ferry flying back to MJI from BNX after MRO) behind I-TIGI, right after the latter started descending on A13 AWY @ 430 kn.

In 1980 the unofficial IT-LY economic and military cooperation conflicted inexorably with the official IT-US and LY-US political relations. Within such critical scenario, LARAF MiG23MS were de facto unofficially authorized by SISMI to ferry-fly unarmed across IT airspace shadowing behind CT aircrafts on scheduled air corridors in order to carry out MRO in YU as unnoticed and undisturbed as possible by NATO. The LARAF MiG23MS #6950 was supposed to get in behind KM153, an Air Malta Boeing 720B flying LHR-MLA. Since IH870 departed 1h53' behind schedule from BLQ, when the MiG reached A14 AWY it intercepted IH870 first; at that time KM153 was 13'30'' behind schedule, 6' and ∼180 km behind IH870. The MiG RCS was first detected by FRZ VORTAC (interpreted by CIA ATC @ 182606Z as a HDG misalignment of I-TIGI, right after the MiG got in behind the DC9) and by a 513th ACG Boeing E3A Sentry flying @ FL295 in a circular path over GRS in a mission involving several 48th TFW General Dynamics F111F Aardvark and 438th MAW Lockheed C141A Starlifter ferry flying LKZ-CWE. 2 20º GCI Lockheed / Aeritalia TF104G and F104S Starfighter, during #433 GRS-VRN-GRS CAP training in couple, were ordered to verify the presence of a bogey behind IH870; they intercepted the MiG and squawked thrice SIF1 7300 code. Consequently, 2 527th TFTAS Northrop F5E Tiger II from DCI and 2 EC2/5 Dassault Mirage F1C from SOZ were scrambled. Shortly thereafter, AMI and ALA were ordered to abort mission and to leave the bandit to the F5Es. After mid-air collision @ Condor point, the MiG eluded dogfight and kept flying low toward the Calabrian coast; 2 VF41 Grumman F14A, scrambled in couple from NSY, intercepted the MiG near Paola and t≯4' later they shot it down over Timpa delle Magare.

BB 26048, one of four (out of a class that is 234 units strong) to carry the Multiservice livery, is seen here passing Melun station on a EuroNight train from either Rome (train 226 «Palatino») or Venice (train 220 «Stendhal», or «Rialto»... the Italians can't seem to agree on the name of this train). As large delays (2-3 hours or more) were quite frequent on these trains, it is impossible for me in hindsight to check which one it was.

Note the sign that indicates where TGV trains are to stop. These were there specifically for the very odd pair of TGVs to Marseille starting not in Paris but in the suburb of Melun. It ran once a day on weekdays and was subsidised by the governments of the Yonne département and the Bourgogne region, and was created in 1996. It called at Sens and Laroche-Migennes before joining the high speed line at its kilometre 117 and then calling at Lyon Part-Dieu, Valence, Avignon and Marseille St. Charles. When the LGV Méditerranée was opened in 2001, the train used that line and replaced the stops at Valence and Avignon by their TGV station counterparts. In 2009, circulation outside of summer was cut back to twice a week, but in an effort to attract more passengers its starting point was placed in Fontainebleau, closer to Paris. Finally, in December 2011, the train was definitively cancelled because the public authorities mentioned above no longer wished to cover the losses incurred by running this service. Melun, May 2005.

In December 2005, the «Rhône-Océan» (Genève (CH) - ) Lyon - Quimper was rerouted on a big detour via Dijon, the Paris area and Les Aubrais-Orléans in order to run on electric lines only (at the same occassion, it lost its through coaches for Bordeaux, leaving Lyon-Bordeaux without an overnight connection). In December 2009, it was cancelled altogether.

In 2004, however, none of that was yet "à l'ordre du jour", and train 4548 «Rhône-Océan» from Genève to Quimper is patiently awaiting departure in the direction of Roanne, St. Germain des Fossés, Vierzon, St. Pierre des Corps, Angers, Nantes, and Quimper, having just swapped the electric loco for a couple of BB 67300 class diesels. The car transporters are for the Genève-Auray and Lyon-Auray services. At the back are the coaches to Bordeaux (as train 4586), separated from the train at Vierzon. Lyon-Perrache, August 2003.

This year we, the LLMTC (Lowlands L-Gauge Model Train Club, and no, you can't request to become a member, we will invite you, sorry not sorry), again organized a closed-doors meeting to run around some trains.

Other than the previous year we also invited some guests: The Noppenbahner from Germany, Nicolas Tbx from France/Swiss, Maciej Drwiega from Poland, Bart from Belgium and some fellow Model RR builders from the NMF (Nederlandse Modelspoor Federatie), the latter mostly gazing at our models ;)

In the last year before Téoz, two Paris-bound trains next to each other in Brive-la-Gaillarde: on track D, behind BB 26055 in béton (i.e. concrete) livery is train 3650 having come all the way from Cerbère at the Spanish border, and to the right on track F, behind BB 26014 in Multiservice livery (but with a spare roof piece from a béton one) is another train of which I cannot retrieve the number, starting in Brive and calling at a lot more stations. Anno 2013, the train Cerbère-Paris Austerlitz has changed its time slot and hence its number: it is train 3630 nowadays. Note another Corail rake in a siding on the far right of the photo.
