A close-up of one of the many multipurpose installations found within Tiananmen Square. It a combination lamp, public address system and multiple angle security camera.

I made this photo of foot washing at Fort Funston. Fort Funston is a former harbor defense installation located in the southwestern corner of San Francisco, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Formerly known as the Lake Merced Military Reservation, the fort is now a protected area within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Information from Wikipedia. The Fort is visited by half a million people annually and is a place where people can walk or run their dogs and, also, where experienced hang gliders gather to run off the cliffs overlooking the Pacific ocean. Except certain paved areas, this ocean side venue is all sand, which both people and animals pick up while romping or walking. Looks like the dog was not the only one getting its feet washed at this multipurpose water fountain. I captured this image using my Canon Powershot SX50.

119th Street between Marshfield and Paulina, Calumet Park, IL

www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1996-05-30-9605300026-...

Every day the mails carry tons of requests for donations for one cause or another, some worthy, some questionable.

But recently several hundred Chicagoans received a plea that some might consider, well, kind of odd.

A real estate woman who got one of the letters passed it along and asked: "Can you believe this?"

It was sent by Steven J. Thayer, a 30-year-old lawyer, who says he specializes in helping entrepreneurs raise money to start businesses.

And he began by describing a man named Stan who came to him a couple of years ago with a plan to open a carwash on the border of Chicago and the suburb of Calumet Park.

"Like most of our entrepreneurial clients," Thayer wrote, "Stan was enthusiastic about pursuing his dream. Stan's dream was to build the largest multipurpose carwash facility in the country.

"The carwash would include the longest tunnel wash, an 11 bay self wash, a gas station, an oil and lube shop and a convenience mart.

"At the time, Stan only had sketches of the proposed design of the project. He had spent the last 15 years contemplating the concept and was finally ready to pursue his dream.

"The only problem is that Stan's dream carwash cost over $2.8 million."

Thayer then went on to describe Stan's tireless efforts to raise the money with which to build the biggest multipurpose carwash in the country: his dealings with the Small Business Administration, oil companies, the land owner, banks, friends, relatives and other potential investors.

". . . Numerous hours of passionate labor and tears from Stan, his family and his closest friends."

As Thayer described Stan's gripping quest to build the nation's biggest multipurpose carwash, it sounded almost like something out of "The Right Stuff," the story of our astronauts.

"Stan was just one letter away from closing on a lifelong dream . . ."

Then came this one letter, the one from the Small Business Administration. But it said, nope, there was too much debt and not enough equity.

"On April 22, 1996," Thayer wrote, "with the stroke of a pen, the project died.

"Never in my life have I seen a person work so hard to pursue a dream, overcome so many obstacles, and fail. If I can help it, Stan will not be the first."

Then came the pitch.

"My goal in writing this letter is to appeal to the entrepreneurial spirit inside each of us. The Grandstand Auto Bath is the epitome of the entrepreneurial dream. It's the project that could never happen, the dream that would never come true.

"With your help the dream can come true. Together we can make it happen. My plan is simple, we need to raise enough money to balance out the project. My guess is that we only need a few hundred thousand dollars to balance out the project, although the more the better to cover unforeseen contingencies. I believe a fair amount for a contribution to such an entrepreneurial dream would be about $10 a person, although larger contributions are always welcome.

"The logistics are also very simple. If you would like to make a contribution, send a $10 check to (address). We will turn the money over to Stan as needed to keep the project moving.

"Please keep in mind that some of your contributions will go toward repaying Stan's personal debt that helped keep the project, Stan and his family alive for the past few years.

"Your contributions are not tax deductible and are considered a personal gift to Stan. If we don't raise enough money to complete the project, we will still turn the funds over to Stan to help him get his life reorganized. He certainly deserves it. -- Mike Royko, Chicago Tribune, 5/30/1996
