Olympic Games – Vancouver – Vancouverborg…

That MV Vancouverborg, named after the Canadian city Vancouver, is emphasizing the Olympic feeling is obvious. The Olympic rings, the symbol of unity and a sporty get together of all continents, have been applied to the bow of the vessel.

The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) East Africa is working with partners to empower communities in lower Nyando manage climate risk. Agro-forestry, land and water management are among the mitigation interventions employed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Nyando basin. So far, 22 tree nurseries, some owned by self-help groups (more than half of all the nurseries are female-owned). More than 50,000 high-quality tree seedlings have been produced, each worth KSh10-20. About 23,500 multipurpose trees have been planted in homesteads with a 75 per cent survival rate and the local community is establishing a two acre demonstration woodlot. Photos: K. Traumann. The FREMM multipurpose frigate (French Frégate multi-mission or Italian Fregata multi-missione) is a ship designed by DCNS/Armaris and Fincantieri to operate in anti-air, anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, and be capable of carrying out deep strikes against land targets.

The French Navy plans to operate nine FREMM frigates, and the Marina Militare ten. The lead ship, Aquitaine, was commissioned in November 2012. The ships will be built in France by Armaris (owned by DCNS), and in Italy by Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (a joint venture between shipbuilder Fincantieri and aerospace firm Finmeccanica). This arrangement extends the partnerships forged for development of the Horizon CNGFs (Common New Generation Frigates).

In 1934, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway introduced William Stanier's Class 5 locomotive, a multipurpose locomotive that proved immensely useful. They were initally nicknamed "Black Staniers" by contrast with the "Red Staniers" - the Jubilee class of express passenger locomotive. Soon, however, the name had become "Black Fives" and the moniker stuck. So useful did the locomotives prove that 842 examples were built over a 17-year period until 1951. A favourite with drivers and spotters alike, their sheer numbers meant they could be seen on any part of the British Railways network after 1948 doing every job available, and also meant that 18 of them were preserved, meaning they continue to be a favourite to this day; during the summer season, it's a rare day there isn't a Black Five in steam somewhere in Britain!

No. 44806 was built at Derby in 1944. The locomotive was based at many sheds on the Midland route, most notable at Lostock Hall (10D) until it was withdrawn in 1968. In preservation, for a while she carried the name "Magpie", the ITV childrens' magazine programme of the same name arranging to have a locomotive named in competition with BBC's "Blue Peter". Arriving at the NYMR from the Llangollen Railway in 2013, after extensive work at Grosmont she returned to service in summer 2016.
