US military members in High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) convoy onto the parade grounds with the Triumphal Arch at each end built by Saddam Hussein to commemorate the Iran-Iraq war.
To celebrate his victory (actually a draw) over Iran, Saddam decided to build a Triumphal Arch. The concept of a triumphal arch is a European import, without precedent in the Middle East since Roman times. The colossal Hands of Victory monument has dominated Baghdad's skyline since the end of the Iran-Iraq war. Built in duplicate, it marks the entrances to a large new parade ground in central Baghdad, towering 140 feet above the highway. The triumphal arch is shaped as two pairs of crossed swords, made from the guns of dead Iraqi soldiers that were melted and recast as the 24-ton blades of the swords. Captured Iranian helmets are in a net held between the swords. And surrounding the base of the arms are another 5,000 Iranian helmets taken from the battle field. The fists that hold the swords aloft are replicas of Saddam Hussein's own hands. The German company that built the monument, H+H Metalform, said it was given a photograph of Saddam's own forearms to use as a model.
When Saddam inaugurated these triumphal arches, he rode under them on a white horse - an allusion to the steed of Hussein, the Shi'ite Muslim hero martyred at nearby Kerbala. The day before the first bombing run on Bhagdad during the 1991 Gulf War, Iraqi TV showed a mass of Iraqi soldiers marching beneath the huge crossed swords of the Victory Arch, to the theme music from 'Star Wars'. In April 1998 Iraq's volunteers paraded for six hours in Baghdad's Grand Festivities Square, the large outdoor arena marked by the two sets of enormous crossed swords.

Weekend 8th/9th August
Whinlatter Forest is multipurpose. Here are just some of the things it is and does. For ospreys it is a source of suitable trees for nests. For mountain bikers there is the adrenaline rush of downhill speed and technical jumps. For the red squirrels it is a safe haven from the ravages of squirrelpox virus. For walkers, there are the stunning views and footpaths long and short to suit most abilities. With a whoop and a shriek human monkeys swing through the trees on Go Ape. A tranquil cup of coffee can be sipped at Siskins whilst watching the world go by. Retail therapy and forest information is provided by the forest shop. Animals from tiny new-hatched lizards to red-coated Roe deer use it as their home. Sometimes it is hard to remember that the Forestry Commission does the business of growing and harvesting trees very well too. Leading the way globally it has developed a record of sustainability bar none as people, wildlife and economic growth are integrated. From the woods around Bassenthwaite our younger fir trees go to Workington for making pulp and chipboard, the brashings go to Lockerbie for the power station and larger spruces go to Carlisle to be cut up as planks and timbers for the building industry. The best trees we have are the majestic hard-wood Douglas Firs planted when our grandmothers’ were born. Their huge straight trunks are sought after by specialist timber merchants, buying for strength and beauty. As we all use the forest this summer, each with our own interests, it is sometimes good stand back and ponder over how we fit into this wider living working landscape.

The Hong Kong Cultural Centre (Chinese: 香港文化中心) is a multipurpose performance facility in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Hong Kong [1]. The concert hall inside houses an 8,000-pipe organ by Austrian firm Rieger Orgelbau and is the largest in Asia. I have had the pleasure of going to a few Bach Organ Concertos at the concert hall and let’s just say that the organ kicks some serious ass.
I did not use to like this building when it was first built. For some reasons, the architectures for government buildings often feature these very odd shade of pastels which look like toilets to me—mainly because perhaps the public toilets also use the same materials as they are easy to maintain and clean. But at night, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre truly shines—literally.
Since moving back to Hong Kong in 2012, I have been coming here for concerts and drama performances much more frequently than I used to, and in turn allows me to experience this building complex in new ways then before mainly perhaps because I also get to walk around it more often and finding more interesting perspective on this building.

The Toyota Porte is a small multipurpose vehicle, and is more or less a "minivan" version of the Vitz/Yaris compact. It comes with a 1.3 or 1.5 liter engine and a continuously variable transmission.
One key feature of the Porte is that the driver's side has standard swing-out doors, while the passenger's side has a large sliding door.
Pricing is ¥1,949,400 for this base model, and goes up to ¥2,100,600.
The Porte is sold at the Toyota and Toyopet showrooms. There is a twin model, the Spade with different front and rear end, which is sold by the Corolla and Netz stores; the blue model in the background with clear taillights is the Spade.
I spent an hour at the Toyota Mega Web showroom in Odaiba, Tokyo, on a chilly winter evening, to check out what kinds of cars Toyota's home customers can buy, and how different they are from the ones I can see at home in Los Angeles.

Lance Cpl. Patrick Gonser (closest), an assistant Shoulder-Launched Multi-Purpose Assault Weapon gunner with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment eyes the back blast unleashed by his SMAW gunner’s rocket launch at Rodriguez Live-Fire Complex in the Republic of Korea April 11, ensuring that no personnel are behind the firing line of the back blast. “It’s a visceral experience,” said Gonser about firing and assistant gunning for the SMAW. “It feels like you’re getting hit in the chest initially, and then you’re overwhelmed by the overpressure and heat from the back blast,” all of which happens in a fraction of a second. Assault men from across the battalion came together to conduct the live-fire training in support of exercise Ssang Yong 2013. Ssang Yong, meaning “Twin Dragons,” represents the U.S. and ROK forces and is intended to strengthen ROK-U.S. combat readiness and joint and combined interoperability through the conduct of joint and combined amphibious operations.
