Both new and returning students moved in to their dorms today. The orientation crew did a wonderful job swooping in and helping new students and their families.

I tried many different fruits and glasses to achieve this affect but decided on a glass vase and an apple as the apple was heavy enough to create a dramatic splash. I wanted to create a low key photograph so positioned the objects in front of a black background. The only source of lighting came from a small lamp so I increased the ISO to 5000. As the light was so limited I used a large aperture of f/5.3, I tried using a flash to increase the light but I felt that the photograph looked better without. The shutter speed was set at 1/200 as this was fast enough to capture the motion. Using manual focus enabled me to focus on the object and as I had positioned the camera on a steady box the focus did not need to change. To edit, I increased the contrast and decreased the light and saturation.
