I am delving into my back catalogue and either posting images that haven't been seen before, or converting others to Mono !

Mono Lake is a saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake which make its water alkaline. The desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp, which thrive in its waters, and provides critical habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and alkali flies. Historically, the native Kutzadika'a people ate the alkali fly pupae, which live in the shallow waters around the edge of the lake. Nancy and I visited Mono Lake during our August 2016 vacation.
Another of our stops on our tour was to Mono Lake in Mono County, California, this is a saline lake with very little life in it and an abundance of 'Tufa Rock' around the shoreline giving these strange formations.

taken in mono lake, ca. awesome place and looks great at sunrise or sunset. we went there at 5am but had a flat tyre and hence just missed the sunrise.
but, still we got some nice snaps and this is probably one of them.
from Wikipedia:
Mono Lake is believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago, dating back to the Long Valley eruption. Sediments located below the ash layer hint that Mono Lake could be a remnant of a larger and older lake that once covered a large part of Nevada and Utah, making it among the oldest lakes in North America.
Mono lake is a terminal lake in a watershed fed from melting runoff with no outlet. Dissolved salts in the runoff thus remain in the lake and raise the pH and the salt concentration.
Mono Lake is in a geologic active area at the north end of the Mono-Inyo Crater volcanic chain of the Long Valley Caldera. The geological activity is caused by faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada, and is associated with the crustal stretching of the Basin and Range Province.
Volcanic activity continues in the Mono Lake vicinity: the most recent eruption occurred 250 years ago at Negit Island in Mono Lake. Panum Crater (on the south shore of the lake) is an excellent example of a combined rhyolite dome and cinder cone.
Sunrise at the Mono Lake South Tufas. The clouds were looking great this morning. But right before everything was going to light up, the east started sucking them up. Still a great sunrise.

Mono Lake provides some spectacular landscape photography, but this particular afternoon sky was exceptional, right, Chris?
Retracing a trip I made back in August 2006, I wanted to show M Yosemite, Mono Lake and Bodie.
This picture was particularly painful as I discovered that all the shots taken tonight to be full of dust spots. So about 70 clone operations later, here is the result. I hope you like it.
